I've been working on this song, Báidín Fheilimí, that I found in Mary O'Laughlin's book on Irish Singing, and after I heard a recording of it by John Spillane, on a YouTube video, I just had to try learining it me-self... This video was made with the Kindle Fire HD on a Univrsal Tablet Holder attached to the microphone stand. The KXIO Radio Stage - Coffee House has good acoustics so I only used my little Cube Street amplifier. The microphone was a Velbon that I purchased a few years ago from Radio Shack
I've recently found a great version of this song on Martin Dardis' website called
Baidin Fheilimi chords and lyrics, what's more is that it has an alternative third (ending) verse which I like better !

Fairy
A fairy (also fay, fae, fair folk; from faery, faerie, "realm of the fays") is a type of mythical being or legendary creature in European folklore, a form of spirit, often described as metaphysical, supernatural, or preternatural.
Etymology
According to Thomas Keightley, the word "fairy" derives from the Latin fata, and is from the Old French form faerie, describing "enchantment". Other forms are the Italian fata, and the Provençal "fada". In old French romance, "fee" was a woman skilled in magic, and who knew the power and virtue of words, of stones, and of herbs.
Faie became Modern English fay. Faierie became fairy, but with that spelling now almost exclusively referring to one of the legendary people, with the same meaning as fay. The word "fairy" was used to in represent an illusion, or enchantment; the land of the Faes; collectively the inhabitants thereof; or an individual such as a fairy knight.
To the word faie was added the suffix -erie (Modern English -(e)ry), used to express either a place where something is found (fishery, nunnery) or a trade or typical activity engaged in (cookery, thievery). In later usage it generally applied to any kind of quality or activity associated with a particular type of person, as in English knavery, roguery, wizardry. In the sense "land where fairies dwell", the distinctive and archaic spellings Faery and Faerie are often used.

I've been working on this song, Báidín Fheilimí, that I found in Mary O'Laughlin's book on Irish Singing, and after I heard a recording of it by John Spillane, on a YouTube video, I just had to try learining it me-self... This video was made with the Kindle Fire HD on a Univrsal Tablet Holder attached to the microphone stand. The KXIO Radio Stage - Coffee House has good acoustics so I only used my little Cube Street amplifier. The microphone was a Velbon that I purchased a few years ago from Radio Shack I've recently found a great version of this song on Martin Dardis' website called Baidin Fheilimi chords and lyrics, what's more is that it has an alternative third (ending) verse which I like better ! From the moment Malcolm Arnold ‘s exciting score begins you know you're in for a great melodrama! In 'Britannia Mews', the title of Margery Sharp's book (it was released in the US as "Forbidden Street") Maureen O'Hara plays Adelaide, a wealthy woman who marries an artist (Dana Andrews) against her families wishes, and in one of his drunken stupors she accidentally pushes him down some steps to his death, and is consequently blackmailed for two years by a hideous old crone known as ‘The Sow', who saw the accident. Played by Sybil Thorndike this is a role that's hard to forget. Adelaide is then befriended by a barrister, also played by Dana Andrews, who sees off ‘The Sow', falls in love with her, reunites her with her family - and the rest is obvious! The two leads give good performances, but it's impossible to overlook, or forget, the tremendous performance of Dame Sybil Thorndike.
Adelaide's window looks straight down the mews street in which she eventually lives in and the tremendously atmospheric set is seen changing in appearance as the times in the movie move on. There is a certain amount of controversy over whether Dana Andrews voice was dubbed to make him sound more English, either here, or in the states, but this has not been reliably authenticated as far as I know. The film was directed by Jean Neglescu and filmed in the UK, hence the abundance of British actors such as A E Matthews, Fay Compton, Diane Hart, Anne Buchart and Wilfred Hyde-White in supporting roles. Certainly a film to enjoy on a dull Sunday afternoon!
