X-15- Record Breaker
na joint research program that NASA conducted with the Air Force, the Navy, and North American Aviation, Inc., the X-15 experimental aircraft set the world's unofficial speed and altitude records for crewed flight. Information from the highly successful program contributed to the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Space Shuttle piloted space flight programs. The outer skin of the X-15 was a nickel-chrome alloy called Inconel X, employed in a heat sink structure to withstand the results of aerodynamic heating when the aircraft was flying within the atmosphere. The cabin was made of aluminum and was isolated from the outer structure to keep it cool. NASA FACT SHEET X-15 Accomplishments The distinguished Langley aeronautical researcher John Becker, who was an early advocate of the X-15 program, identified 25 specific accomplishments of the program, including: * First application of hypersonic theory and wind tunnel work to an actual flight vehicle. * First use of reaction controls for attitude control in space. * First reusable super alloy structure capable of withstanding the temperatures and thermal gradients of hypersonic reentry. * Development of a servo-actuated-ball nose flow direction sensor for operation over an extreme range of dynamic pressure and a stagnation air temperature of 1900° F (for accurate measurement of air speed and flow angle at supersonic and hypersonic speeds). * Development of the first practical full pressure suit for pilot protection in space ...

Safe Wheelchair Transfer (Slide Board) - Dynamic Alternating Air Mattress
Chris Mason demonstrates how he transfers from a wheelchair to a pressure relieving dynamic mattress via a slide board (bed board). Pressure relieving mattresses that are approved for use within the NHS are great at helping to prevent pressure ulcers in most managed care situations but can be dangerous when used for dressing, self positioning and reaching let alone wheelchair transfers. This Squirrel Diamond has been built with a special high level of stability to ensure safe independent transfer using various items including a slide board.

X-15 Record Breaker Update
Three X-15s made 199 flights during a research program which lasted from 1960 through 1968. It was a daring, yet highly successful program that resulted in hundreds of technical reports. It made contributions to the NASA space program of the 1960s and also on the design and flight of the Space Shuttle many years later. An unofficial motto of flight research of the 1940s and 1950s was "higher and faster." By the late 1950s the last frontier of that goal was hypersonic flight (Mach 5+) to the edge of space. It would require a huge leap in aeronautical technology, life support systems and flight planning. The North American X-15 rocket plane was built to meet that challenge. It was designed to fly at speeds up to Mach 6, and altitudes up to 250000 ft. The aircraft went on to reach a maximum speed of Mach 6.7 and a maximum altitude of 354200 ft. Looking at it another way, Mach 6 is about one mile per second, and flight above 264000 ft. qualifies an Air Force pilot for astronaut wings. The plane was air launched by NASA's converted B-52 at 45000 feet and a speed of 500 mph. Generally there were two types of flight profiles: high-speed, or high-altitude. High-speed flights were usually done below an altitude of 100000 feet and flown as a conventional airplane using aerodynamic controls. High-altitude flights began with a steep, full-power climb to leave the atmosphere, followed by up to two minutes of "coasting up" to the peak altitude after the engine was shut down ...

Airbus A380 Flutter Test
Flutter Excitation One of the most dangerous events that can occur in flight is a phenomena called "flutter". Flutter is an aerodynamically induced vibration of a wing, tail, or control surface that can result in total structural failure in a matter of seconds. The prediction of flutter is not a precise science and requires flight verification that flutter will not occur within the normal flight envelope. The aerodynamic surfaces of an airplane are constructed so that they can carry the loads that are produced in flight. For example the wing must be capable of supporting the weight of the airplane as well as the additional lift produced during turning flight. The resulting wing structure can be viewed as a blade or spring extending from the fuselage. If we "tap" the spring with a hammer, it will vibrate at a frequency which relates to the stiffness of the spring. A stiff spring will vibrate at a higher frequency than a more limber spring. This frequency is known as the "natural frequency" of the spring. Flutter will usually occur at or near the natural frequency of the structure, that is, some small aerodynamic force will cause the structure to vibrate at its natural frequency. If this small force persists at the same frequency as the natural frequency of the structure, a condition called "resonance" occurs. Under a resonant condition, the amplitude of the vibration will increase dramatically in a very short time and can cause catastrophic failure in the structure. The ...

This time, my friend and I had a chance to do a project about
mechanism design. In this video, we will show you especially about
four-bar linkage and gear trains. For instance, riding a bicycle has
two mechanisms, one for four bar linkage, and the other for gear
trains. And the watch, for example, is consist of numerous gears.
Almost everyone takes the watch in daily life, but just a few knows
about the principle how it works. Synthesis of mechanism is not
shown in this video, only analysis is presented.
When we analyze the mechanisms, we used "Graphical analysis method" and "Analytical
analysis method". Calculating with vector loop equation, and
reviewing with graphical method.
Showing how the gears in the watch rotates was really difficult for
us. We knew the theoretical angular velocity, but C4D was not
accurate to realize them. Finally, we tried FPS division method and it
worked,
On analyzing four-bar linkage with bicycle, we used tracking
function with AE.
We hope all of you can be more familiar with mechanism design
through this movie. Merry christmas and Happy new year.

Additional engineering statement
Case : the bicycle
We first thought that analyzing the mechanism of riding a bicycle would be
really easy because the length of every linkage was determined so we could
parameterize every four angle, angular velocity and angular acceleration
with one specific angle. But it was totally a mistake. Finally we divided 2Π
rad in to 10 sections, which means every 36°, and found values related to the
angle and interpolated them to make continuous numbers.
When climbing up the ascent, we assumed the length between the saddle and the
crank axis varies. We set up the equation (which is used in this movie) of the
length as "85+5sin(angular velocity of the crank*Π*t)cm" so that the length varies
from 80cm to 90cm. It was quite reasonable to set up the equation as above
except for a few errors. For instance, following that equation, the length becomes
the smallest when the pedal is on the lowest position and largest when on the top,
but that assumption makes the motion of the bones seem forced or unnatural.
This equation is to be complemented soon enough. We calculated 7 sorts of
variables; angular velocity, angular acceleration, velocity, tangential acceleration,
normal acceleration, relative velocity, relative acceleration; but inserting all of
those values made the pictures disoriented thus we got rid of every value except
for angular velocity.
Case : the watch
In designing the gears, we did not consider the pitch radius or pressure angle so
it does not fit to the engineering models. But the angular velocity ratio of each
gear related to the number of teeth ratio was designed precisely. In engineering
concept, the gear must have at leat 12 teeth so the second gear, called
Escapement gear, has 12 teeth in the video which has actually only 6 teeth. And
we want you to watch very carefully how the minute hand gear affects the hour
hand gear with converting gear 2, because even concepts of those concentric hand
gears movement was not easily understood, we costed about 3 days to realize it. In
this film, we do not present the torque of the gears in the bike or watch. With a
piece of paper and a pen, most of you can caluculate it with no longer than 10
minutes.

Nuclear Power (and Cows)
Deutscher Text weiter unten.
This short film is not a political statement, although the international debate about nuclear energy after Fukushima inspired the making of it.
In Switzerland, there are four nuclear power plants, running five reactors: Beznau I & II, Mühleberg, Goesgen and Leibstadt.
Nowadays, Switzerland’s power production consists of 55% hydroelectricity, 40% nuclear energy and 5% from other sources as for instance incinerators (Source: BFE). After the shutdown of the Oldbury reactor in Western England at the end of February 2012, Beznau I is now the oldest pressurized water reactor worldwide, running since September 1st 1969.
Last but not least, major concern regarding the safety of the Mühleberg reactor arises from the formation of cracks in the core shroud inside the vessel and has provoked a heated debate regarding the necessity of a shutdown of the reactor.
With its cooling towers, Goesgen and Leibstadt are far more photogenic for time-lapse than Beznau and Mühleberg. And cows, you will find them all over Switzerland.
So switch on the lights!
For the "making of" information and photo gallery check out the project website www.helvetiabynight.com.
About:
‘Helvetia by Night’ is a time-lapse project about Switzerland by night. Short videos of long nights present you the stunning beauty of the Swiss Alps and show you the magic of a spectacular nighttime sky. Imagine watching a slide-show at fast speed or looking at a flip book. It is photography turning into a movie. Everything in the videos is real and happening out there while most of us are sleeping.
The three videos ‘Helvetia’s Dream’, ‘Frenetic Zurich’ and ‘Nuclear Power (and Cows)’ are my first footsteps on the road of time-lapse photography. It is a most exciting road to follow with lots of testing, trying and learning every night I spend photographing in the Swiss mountains. Right now, 3D motion control is my biggest challenge. More time-lapse videos of existing footage will be published soon.
Helvetia is the female national personification of Switzerland. The name is a derivation of the ethnonym Helvetii, the name of the Gaulish tribe inhabiting the Swiss Plateau prior to the Roman conquest. Identification of the Swiss as ‘Helvetians’ became common in the 18th century and Helvetia appears on official federal coins and stamps (Source: Wikipedia).
Some words about me:
I grew up in Arosa, a small paradise in the mountains of eastern Switzerland located 1800m above sea level. Inspired by such great scenery, photography has become my passion early in life. Since 2005 I work as press photographer for the Swiss press photo agency KEYSTONE in Zurich. Time-lapse photography became a favorite hobby of mine in the year 2011. Besides that I am doing some other private work which can be found here: www.dellabella.ch
Have fun watching the time-lapse videos!

LeviTee Golf Gloves :: Try One on Today and Feel the Difference!
Born from a simple idea one afternoon on the golf course, LeviTee Glove’s patent-pending design places foam pads between the fingers which promotes a relaxed hand and alleviates tension and fatigue in the hands and arms.
Grip force tests conducted with our Hand Dynamometers show up to a 30% reduction in grip pressure.
LeviTee helps to avoid the “death grip”. By doing so, the golfer gets the proper grip pressure and results have included faster swing speeds and straighter, longer ball flights.
Tension starts in the hands and the tightness creeps into all the other muscles, inhibiting any real dynamic swing. The LeviTee Glove helps eliminate the tightness.
The LeviTee Glove combines tour quality cabretta leather with a durable synthetic material to give you a glove that feels good and is as comfortable as traditional gloves, if not more comfortable.

oh the same day edit.
how i reluctantly i must admit that being a slow editor, i once hated being in charge of these things.
to have to wake up at 5 am on a weekend to work more hours then two consecutive weekday work days; knowing the next time i'll get to see my bed is 3 am.
the pressure of having to produce a piece of fine art in a short (aka. unreasonable) amount of time; under the extreme scrutiny of production house standards.
the task to document, stylize, and emote all the important events of a once in a lifetime event; reinterpreted under a vision that is deemed not only fit by myself, but of course the couple as well.
but that final reward of having the newly married couple and about 500 people live and breathe your work in those few minutes makes it all worthwhile.
almost within seconds after the same day edit began, i couldn't help but feel that magic as i could hear people whispering 'this is amazing' and was giggling hearing 'that was better then a real tim hortons commercial'. i felt my heart begin to pound uncontrollably as i forgot what it had felt like to join in the excitement with the crowd...
hello to the 2011 season.
TECHNICAL + PRODUCTION TIDBITS for my industry friends and colleagues.
shot with my brothers freshsox/konrad czystowski + the boy wonder/mark klassen.
cameras used:
3 Canon 5dmkii's for most of the day
2 Canon 7ds for the ceremony bride and groom angles; 1 more more 5d mike during the ceremony
everything shot in 24p mode, unless I was running steadicam where i would over crank my footage shooting everything in 30p using my 30p -> 24p compressor setting to match the tone of the song. i think my trusty + brilliant friend troy turgano for that suggestion as he helped me choose this song for the steph + chi.
COLOR CORRECTION was via combination of fcp rgb balance, 2-way + 3-way colour corrector + newbluefx + modified mb filters.
all cameras use custom ultra flat profiles we design for our 5ds that are custom mated to the specific glass types we use (ie. zeiss vs canon)
for my 'slower' lenses in lower light setttings (ie. f 2.8's); i employ the Cinestyle custom profile. This profile can extend the dynamic range in lower light conditions, but the image is horribly flat straight out of the camera and requires a very strong understanding of colour theory and cleanup ability to make the image feel warm and rich in tone, color and contrast.
matching our cameras took some where with konrad shooting the cleanest out of all 3 of us for most of the day.
GLASS USED
-zeiss 35/2 zf,
-zeiss 50 1.4 zf - brideal preps workhorse
-zeiss 21/2.8 zf - steadicam pilot
-zeiss makro 100/2
-canon 50/1.2 L,
-canon 24/1.4 L II
STABILIZATION
-cinevate atlas 30,
-manfrotto monopod 561hdv - best overall value for your money
-steadicam pilot
-additional stabilization in post provided my grateful sponsor NEWBLUE FX stabilizer. it is quicker, faster, more intuitive to use and more cost effective then all the competitors in the image stabilization software market.
this film is the same day edit from last saturday evening; i'll be posting a the reactions from the couple for the sde before the weekend, in addition to posting a few more weddings from last season as they're are some hidden gems worth sharing.

TACTICAL NUKE
Upshot-Knothole Grable was a nuclear weapons test conducted by the United States as part of Operation Upshot-Knothole. Detonation of the associated nuclear weapon occurred shortly after its deployment at 8:30am PDT (1530 UTC) on May 25, 1953, in Area 5 of the Nevada Test Site. The codename Grable was chosen because the letter Grable is phonetic for, G, stands for "gun", since the warhead was a gun-type fission weapon. It was in the form of a shell, or artillery-fired atomic projectile (AFAP), the first of its kind. Grable was the second of only two gun-type warheads ever detonated (the first was Little Boy, the weapon used against Hiroshima; all other atomic weapons were implosion-type weapons). The shell, designated a Mark 9 nuclear weapon, had a diameter of 280 mm (11.02 in), was 138 cm (54.4 in) long and weighed 364 kg (803 lb). The M65 Atomic Cannon from which it was fired had a muzzle velocity of 625 m/s (2060 ft/s), for a nominal range of 32 km (20 miles), and weighed 77 metric tons (85 t). The detonation of Grable occurred 19 seconds after its firing.[1] It detonated over 11000 yards (over 10 km, 6.25 mi) away from the gun it was fired from, over a part of the Nevada Test Site known as Frenchman Flat. The explosion was an air burst of 160 m (524 ft) above the ground (7 m (24 ft) above its designated burst altitude), 26 m (87 ft) west and 41 m (136 ft) south of its target (slightly uprange). Its yield was estimated at 15 kilotons, around the same level as Little Boy ...
