Fake Sign Language Interpreter Not Even Close At Mandela Funeral
"There's outrage among many in the deaf community over the appearance on stage Tuesday of a man who they say was only pretending to do sign language interpretation as President Obama and other world leaders eulogized Nelson Mandela in Johannesburg, South Africa. Among those who noticed what was happening was Wilma Newhoudt, the first deaf person elected to South Africa's parliament and a vice president of the World Federation of the Deaf. "Shame on this male so called interpreter on the stage," she wrote on Twitter during the memorial service. "What is he signing? He knows that the deaf cannot vocally boo him off. Shame on him!""* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break it down. *Read more here from Mark Memmott / NPR: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2013/12/11/250179179/fake-sign-language-interpreter-marred-mandela-memorial- published: 12 Dec 2013

'Fake' interpreter at Nelson Mandela memorial
'Fake' interpreter at Nelson Mandela memorial
The sign language interpreter at a high-profile memorial event for Nelson Mandela has been accused of making signs up. The man, who signed for a portion of the ceremony including Barack Obama's speech, was simply making up his own signs, say the Deaf Federation of South Africa. David Buxton, the CEO of the British Deaf Association, said the man, who was supposed to be signing in South African, was "waving his hands around but there was no meaning." Mr Buxton said it was "childish hand gestures and clapping, it was as if he had never learnt a word of sign language in his life." He said sign languages across the world share a similar structure and pattern, but his were just repetitive hand movements. "It was hours of complete nonsense. He is clearly a fraud who wanted to stand on stage with big and important people. It's quite audacious if you think about it." Sign Language Interpreter Translates Mandela Memorial Imposter's Signs
Many prominent leaders from around the world went to Nelson Mandela's memorial service in South Africa and, as is often the case at big events like this, they had a sign language interpreter there to translate for the hearing impaired. The only problem was that the movements the translator was making with his hands made no sense and many people became suspicious of him. So we brought in a real sign language interpreter to tell us what this guy was actually signing. Thamsanqa Jantjie said he suffers from schizophrenia which affected him during the service. The 34-year-old told Johannesburg's Star newspaper he started hearing voices and hallucinating while on stage. Jantjie explained how the condition has affected him: "I see angels come to the stadium. Sometimes I will react violently on that place. Sometimes I will see things chasing me. You know, I was in a very very difficult position," he said. "Please forgive me, but what I was doing, I was doing what I believe is my calling, I was doing what I believe makes a difference to the country," Jantjie continued. After the memorial, South Africa's leading deaf association denounced Jantjie as a "fake." The government has admitted he was not a professional interpreter. Working to Protect West African Languages and Culture
Working to Protect West African Languages and Culture
From VOA Learning English, this is the Education Report. Experts estimate that half of the 6,000 languages spoken on our planet will have disappeared by the end of the century. In West Africa, academics are trying to protect the language and rich cultural heritage of Togo. At the University of Lome, professor N'bueke Adovi Goeh-Akue studies video of Gen cultural rituals. The professor is a cultural heritage specialist. He himself is a Gen, one of many ethnic groups in Togo. He has made films of Gen cultural customs with financial assistance from the United States. He says the Gen have an important place in Togo's history and culture. Gen rituals show how its people see their world, the interaction between the living and the dead, the seen and the unseen. The Gen believe in many different voodoo gods. But today, professor Goeh-Akue says fewer and fewer Gen children go through voodoo initiation ceremonies. He says that increasingly, the new generation does not recognize the importance of these cultural traditions. He says formal education and the spread of Christianity have reduced their influence. Many young people think traditional practices are uncivilized. And while the Gen language is widely spoken in Lome, the professor says it is not taught in schools. Gen is one of about 39 languages spoken in Togo. Anahit Minasyan is a language specialist with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. He says a language needs people who speak it as their first language. She says a language needs people who can speak it as their second language. If there are not, she says, a language is extinct. She says languages can die as a result of increasingly globalization. For VOA Learning English, I'm Alex Villarreal.- published: 14 Sep 2013
