Palos Verdes Peninsula

The Palos Verdes Peninsula is a landform and a geographic sub-region of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, within southwestern Los Angeles County in the U.S. state of California. It is located south of the cities of Torrance and Carson, and is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west and south, and the Port of Los Angeles on the east. The peninsula contains a group of affluent coastal cities in the Palos Verdes Hills, including Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Rolling Hills and Rolling Hills Estates. The peninsula also physically includes the Los Angeles City neighborhood of San Pedro; however, San Pedro lies on flatlands to the east of the Palos Verdes Hills, and is sometimes not considered to be part of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, culturally speaking. The Palos Verdes Peninsula can be considered part of the South Bay region of the Los Angeles metro area.

The affluent hill cities on the peninsula are known for dramatic ocean and city views, distinguished schools, extensive horse trails, and high home prices.

Rancho Palos Verdes, California

Rancho Palos Verdes (also known by the abbreviation RPV) is a city in Los Angeles County, California atop the Palos Verdes Hills and bluffs of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. An affluent suburb of Los Angeles, it is known for large tracts of open space and expansive views of the Pacific Ocean. Rancho Palos Verdes is translated as "Ranch of Green Trees" or "Ranch of Sticks", probably referring to the willows in the northeastern part of Bixby Slough (now known as Machado Lake) shown on earlier maps.

The history of Rancho Palos Verdes dates back to the Tongva or Gabrielino Indians, who inhabited the site before the Age of Discovery. Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was credited as the first European to navigate the California Coast in 1542, which included the hills of Rancho Palos Verdes. Rancho de los Palos Verdes was established by a Mexican land grant given in 1846 by Governor Pio Pico to Jose Loreto and Juan Capistrano Sepulveda.

The city's most notable geographic features are the Palos Verdes Hills and cliffs, with grand vistas of the Pacific Ocean and of Santa Catalina Island. The city incorporated on September 7, 1973. The population was 41,643 at the 2010 census.

The commune of Bogdana is one of the most developed communes of Vaslui County from an agricultural and economic point of view.

Bogdana is situatated in the central-west part of Vaslui county. It falls within the region of the Tutova Hills, with the hilly landscape characteristic of that zone.

On is bordered on the north by the commune Puşcaşi, on the east by the commune Lipovăț, on extreme southeast by the commune Bogdăneşti, on the southwest by the commune Alexandru Vlahuţă, on the south by the commune Bogdănița, and on the west by the commune Poienești.

The commune is composed of nine villages: Arşiţa, Bogdana, Fântâna Blănarului, Găvanu, Lacu Babei, Plopeni, Similişoara, Suceveni and Verdeş. The surface area is 5,337 hectares (13,190 acres) and the population is 3125 people. The principal economic activities are agriculture and milling and processing wood.

History

Bogdana traces back to a 15th-century settlement under the name of Zvasteleşti, at the site of the present-day village of Bogdana. A 20 October 1468 document from Stephen III of Moldavia (Ştefan cel Mare), mentions a bargain between Toader Zvasteala (after whom the village was named) and his sisters "the first living in the village of Zvasteleşti, but the others in the village of Sarbaneşti, both in Bogdana." Other nearby villages mentioned are Horjastii, Sarbaneşti, and others that no longer exist. The present-day village of Suceveni dates from the 18th century, Fântâna Blănarului from 1830, Similişoara from 1845, and Lacu Babei from 1880.

Etymology of California

California is a place name used by three North American states: in the United States by the state of California, and in Mexico by the states of Baja California and Baja California Sur. Collectively, these three areas constitute the region formerly referred to as Las Californias. The name California is shared by many other places in other parts of the world whose names derive from the original. The name "California" was applied to the territory now known as the state of California by one or more Spanish explorers in the 16th century and was probably a reference to a mythical land described in a popular novel of the time: Las Sergas de Esplandián. Several other origins have been suggested for the word "California", including Spanish, Latin, South Asian, and Aboriginal American origins. All of these are disputed.

California originally referred to the entire region composed of the Baja California peninsula now known as Mexican Baja California and Baja California Sur, and upper mainland now known as the U.S. states of California and parts of Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and Wyoming. After Mexico's independence from Spain, the upper territory became the Alta California province. In even earlier times, the boundaries of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean coastlines were only partially explored and California was shown on early maps as an island. The Sea of Cortez is also known as the Gulf of California.
