Baruch Spinoza Part 1
Please enjoy and subscribe too. Thanks! Baruch Spinoza (24 November 1632 -- 21 February 1677) — later Benedict de Spinoza — was a Jewish-Dutch philosopher. Revealing considerable scientific aptitude, the breadth and importance of Spinoza's work was not fully realized until years after his death. By laying the groundwork for the 18th century Enlightenment and modern biblical criticism, he came to be considered one of the great rationalists of 17th-century philosophy. His magnum opus, the posthumous Ethics, in which he opposed Descartes's mind--body dualism, has earned him recognition as one of Western philosophy's most important contributors. In the Ethics, "Spinoza wrote the last indisputable Latin masterpiece, and one in which the refined conceptions of medieval philosophy are finally turned against themselves and destroyed entirely." Philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel said of all contemporary philosophers, "You are either a Spinozist or not a philosopher at all." Spinoza's name in different languages is Hebrew: ברוך שפינוזה Baruch Spinoza, Portuguese: Benedito or Bento de Espinosa and Latin: Benedictus de Spinoza; in all these languages, the given name means "the Blessed". Spinoza was raised in the Portuguese Jewish community in Amsterdam. He developed highly controversial ideas regarding the authenticity of the Hebrew Bible and the nature of the Divine. The Jewish religious authorities issued a cherem (Hebrew: חרם, a kind of ban, shunning, ostracism, expulsion, or excommunication) against him, effectively excluding him from Jewish society at age 23. His books were also later put on the Catholic Church's Index of Forbidden Books. Spinoza lived quietly as a lens grinder, turning down rewards and honors throughout his life, including prestigious teaching positions, and gave his family inheritance to his sister. Spinoza's philosophical accomplishments and moral character prompted 20th century philosopher Gilles Deleuze to name him "the 'prince' of philosophers". Spinoza died at the age of 44 allegedly of a lung illness, perhaps tuberculosis or silicosis exacerbated by fine glass dust inhaled while grinding optical lenses. Spinoza is buried in the churchyard of the Christian Nieuwe Kerk in The Hague.- published: 17 Oct 2013

Shadow Object 3
computer, kinect, projector, metal, motor, arduino processor, lens
projection: 68.9 x 48" / 175 x 122 cm
wall mount: 28.4 x 17.3 x 11.8" / 72 x 44 x 30 cm
"Semioptics for Spinoza" is the third installation from Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s "Shadow Object" series of works, which feature objects with animated, alien shadows.
A plano-convex lens, similar to those made by philosopher Baruch Spinoza for Huygens' telescopes, is suspended from a thread and moves with the air flow and with a small motor. Projected on the wall behind the lens is a set of artificial lens flares generated by equations that take into account the orientation of the lens in relation to the viewing public. The project generates fake light beams that go through the real lens: the lens then diffracts and scatters the fake light creating light source aberrations, directional haze and chromatic distortion. The piece is a mobile that can be moved when touched lightly or by blowing upon it to change the corresponding lens flares.

16.1" x 17.7" x 6.7" / 41 x 45 x 17 cm, XY Plotter
45.2" x 16.1" x 17.7" / 115 x 41 x 45 cm podium
11" x 17" / 28 x 43 cm drawing
The series "Seismoscopes" consists of devices that detect vibration around them, from footsteps to earthquakes, and record this vibration on paper using an automated XY-plotter. As each Seismoscope registers any seismic wave it is programmed to draw an illustration of a single Skeptical philosopher, over and over again. The first Seismoscope, for example, always draws the portrait of Portuguese philosopher Francisco Sanches, author of the seminal treatise "That Nothing is Known". The actual traces of the drawing follow a random path, although staying within the portrait image that has been burned into the memory of the device, --thus, every drawing is different. The artwork is the device itself not the drawings it makes: the collector or curator may give these drawings away, they may exhibit them as a pile on the floor or hang them neatly on the walls.
There will be approx 20 Seismoscopes in total. Preliminary list of Seismoscopes to date:
Seismoscope 1: Francisco Sanches. Portuguese (1550-1623), author of "That Nothing is Known".
Seismoscope 2: Abu Hamid Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Ghazali. Persian (1058-1111), author of "The Incoherence of Philosophers".
Seismoscope 3: Sextus Empiricus. Greek (160-210), author of "Against the Mathematicians".
Seismoscope 4: David Hume. Scotish (1711-1776), author of "An Enquiry concerning human understanding".
Seismoscope 5: Pyrrho of Elis. Greek (360-270 BC), proponent of Acatalepsy (impossibility of comprehending a thing).
Seismoscope 6: Nicolas Malebranche. French (1638-1715), dedicated his work to refute Cartesians.
Seismoscope 7: Juan Huarte de San Juan. Spanish (1529-1588), author of "Examen de ingenios para las ciencias".
Seismoscope 8: Baruch Spinoza. Dutch (1632-1677), vehement attacker of superstition.

Welcome To I Hate 2 Love U.
Sidewalk convo with Marquis Phifer & Aaron Reid.
Love---is any of a number of emotions and experiences related to a sense of strong affection. The word love can refer to a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes, ranging from generic pleasure ("I loved that meal") to intense interpersonal attraction ("I love my wife"). This diversity of meanings, combined with the complexity of the feelings involved, makes love unusually difficult to consistently define, even compared to other emotional states.
Hate---or hatred is a word that describes intense feelings of dislike. It can be used in a wide variety of contexts, from hatred of inanimate objects (e.g. homework, vegetables) to hatred of other people, or even groups of people. Philosophers have offered many influential definitions of hatred. Rene Descartes viewed hate as an awareness that something is bad, combined with an urge to withdraw from it. Baruch Spinoza defined hate as a type of pain that is due to an external cause. Aristotle viewed hate as a desire for the annihilation of an object that is incurable by time. Finally, David Hume believed that hate is an irreducible feeling that is not definable at all.
