There are new allegations that chemical weapons have been used in Syria, this time near the capital Damascus in the Goutha region. As always, details about the alleged attack are unclear but there are suggestions that the nerve agent Sarin was used. Even estimates of the numbers killed vary wildly from dozens to more than 600. This video looks at the most recent attack and why there are always questions over the use of chemical weapons in Syria.

The progress made in Geneva over Iran\'s nuclear programme is in danger of being unraveled, even before the sides meet again next week. No sooner had the current negotiations ended, albeit without agreement, US lawmakers said they wanted to slap more sanctions on Tehran. That\'s on top of an Israeli diplomatic onslaught, aimed at killing off what it called \'a very bad deal.\'

The commotion has seemingly intensified upon news of the deaths, with the European Union threatening to punish Ukraine leaders for violently confronting the protesters and the U.S. government "strongly condemning" police violence. Police instead relied on smoke and tear gas, rubber bullets, stun grenades, molotov cocktails and also water cannons. An order banning police use of water cannons in sub-zero temperatures was also lifted, and as reported below, at least three tanks are awaiting departure from Chernihiv just north of Kyiv. The protests supposedly stem from Ukraine President Vicktor Yanukovych's decision to refuse a European Union trade deal in favor of stronger economic ties with Russia. As reported Monday, the protests have largely been organized by USAID, the CIA's National Endowment for Democracy (NED), Freedom House (which has also been alleged to be a CIA connected organization), and George Soros' Open Society Institute. The rally, the biggest this year in a cycle of pro-Europe protests convulsing the former Soviet republic for the past two months, was spurred by the legislation rushed through parliament last week and which the opposition says will lead to a police state. Hundreds of people have been killed in the Syrian province of Aleppo, in a third day of bombardment by government forces. They're attacking areas of the city that have been held by rebels. One of those rebel groups is the Islamic State of Levant and Iraq. The group had claimed it was linked to Al Qaeda, but in a statement on Monday, Al Qaeda has rejected any connection.  Al Jazeera's Bhanu Bhatnagar reports.

The progress made in Geneva over Iran's nuclear programme is in danger of being unraveled, even before the sides meet again next week. No sooner had the current negotiations ended, albeit without agreement, US lawmakers said they wanted to slap more sanctions on Tehran. That's on top of an Israeli diplomatic onslaught, aimed at killing off what it called 'a very bad deal.' Pakistan's ticking time bomb of Taliban extremism
Pakistan's ticking time bomb of Taliban extremism

The Enemy Within: The Pakistan Taliban (2013) - Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has announced the formation of a committee to hold peace talks with the Pakistan Taliban. But given the longstanding war between the Taliban and government forces, is the committee likely to achieve results? With rare access to a deeply troubled corner of Pakistan, this report looks at Pakistan's war with the Taliban. For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=65884&bid;=2 Out of bounds for most Pakistanis, this report gains rare access to a deeply troubled corner of Pakistan. The army claims it has South Waziristan under control, but is it a ticking time bomb of extremism? In a military hospital in Islamabad, hundreds of "profoundly damaged and disabled" soldiers are being treated. They've come from the western tribal belt, where for the last nine years Pakistan has been waging a largely hidden war against extremists. "There has been this double game that has gone on for many years, of Pakistan supporting the NATO presence in Afghanistan and at the same time allowing the Afghan Taliban to operate against the NATO forces", explains Pakistan's foremost expert on Islamists in the region, Ahmed Rashid. He claims the government's duplicity has radicalised a local variant of the Taliban. "There is now a full-scale extremist movement in Pakistan that is trying to overthrow the State." The agents of some of the worst acts of global terrorism inhabit this remote frontier. Yet many local villagers claim life under the Taliban "was normal" and "nobody was afraid". They argue the army intervention in the region has only been destructive. In an attempt to win hearts and minds, the army has opened a high school for girls, which aid workers argue is "critical for countering extremism". However Pakistan's Taliban vow they're determined "to escalate the war". Syria Conflict: Strike On Aleppo Market 'Kills 21' - 28 Dec A Syrian government airstrike on a crowded market in the northern city of Aleppo has killed at least 21 people, activists say. Videos uploaded by activists showed extensive damage to the market and corpses being pulled from cars. Many more were reported wounded in the strike. Government forces are reported to have killed about 400 people since beginning an aerial offensive in and around Aleppo two weeks ago. Syrian authorities say they are targeting "terrorists", a term the government uses to describe all opposition. The main opposition alliance, the National Coalition, said earlier this week it would not attend a peace conference planned to take place next month in Geneva if the air campaign continued. Human rights groups have condemned the Syrian air force's use of so-called barrel bombs - oil drums or cylinders packed with explosives and shrapnel - saying the targeting is indiscriminate and that the attacks are therefore unlawful. The bombs have hit residential and shopping areas, often killing dozens of civilians, either missing possible military targets or with little indication of any intended military objective, they say. City divided The Syrian conflict began as a peaceful uprising against the authoritarian rule of President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011, but then became a civil war after a violent government crackdown. The UN says more than 100,000 people have been killed in the conflict so far. Aleppo became a major front in the war in mid-2012. The city, Syria's largest and its commercial capital, is now divided between government and rebel-held areas, with large parts of it heavily damaged by the conflict. Also on Saturday, a Norwegian frigate expected to accompany cargo vessels collecting chemical weapons from Syria left the Cypriot port of Limassol. The weapons are due to be taken to the Syrian port of Latakia before being shipped abroad. They will be taken to Italy and then loaded on to a US Navy ship and taken out into international waters, where they will be destroyed in a specially created titanium tank on board. Syria agreed to abandon its chemical arsenal to avert potential US military action after a sarin nerve gas attack in August. The frigate will sail along the Cypriot coast to carry out military drills while it awaits the order to sail to Syria. The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the international body overseeing the destruction of the weapons, said today that it does not expect to meet the 31 December deadline for shipping out the "most critical" chemicals.
