Sihl Valley (German: Sihltal) is a river valley and belongs to the Zimmerberg-Sihltal region located in the district of Horgen in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland. Commonly Sihltal is used as the name of the Lower Sihl Valley, i.e. the area in the southwest of the city of Zürich.
The area alongside Lake Zürich had been formed as the left moraine of the Ice Age glacier, the bed of which is now the Lake Zürich and the valley of the Sihl. Sihl valley is extensively wooded, but also cultivated and heavily populated in its lower parts. The Sihl (German pronunciation: [ˈsiːl]) is the name of a 68 km (42 mi) long river located in the cantons of Schwyz (SZ) and Zürich (ZH). The valley compromises parts of the districts of Einsiedeln (SZ) (upper Sihl valley), Horgen (ZH) and Zürich. The region of the valley comprises about 250 km2 (97 sq mi).
Sihl rises at Drusberg near Hoch-Ybrig in the canton of Schwyz, passes the 8.5 km (5.3 mi) long Sihlsee near Einsiedeln, Sunnegg near Biberbrugg and Schindellegi.
The Sihl is a Swiss river that rises near the Druesberg mountain in the canton of Schwyz, and eventually flows into the Limmat in the centre of the city of Zürich. It has a length of 73 km (45 mi), including the Sihlsee reservoir, thorough which the river flows. Water is abstracted from the river at the Sihlsee, leading to decreased downstream water flows and a consequent negative impact on water quality.
The river flows through, or along the border of, the cantons of Schwyz, Zürich and Zug. The main settlements of the Sihl Valley are all in the canton of Zürich, and include the towns of Langnau am Albis and Adliswil, along with a south-western segment of the city of Zürich. Above Langnau am Albis, some 13 km (8.1 mi) from the confluence with the Limmat, there are no major settlements alongside the river, and only a few small villages. Whilst the town of Einsiedeln is situated close to the Sihlsee, it is actually in the valley of a tributary river, the Alp.
The first written reference to the name dates back to 1018, when it was known as Sylaha. According to a study, which cites several sources, the name is of Old European or Celtic origin: *Sîla (= quiet watercourse, from *sîl = to trickle, wet) > Romance Sila > Old High German Sylaha (sil + Old High German aha = water or watercourse). One webpage claims the name to stem from Celtic and mean “strength” but gives no references.
A steam locomotive is a railway locomotive that produces its pulling power through a steam engine. These locomotives are fueled by burning combustible material—usually coal, wood, or oil—to produce steam in a boiler. The steam moves reciprocating pistons which are mechanically connected to the locomotive's main wheels (drivers). Both fuel and water supplies are carried with the locomotive, either on the locomotive itself or in wagons (tenders) pulled behind. The first steam locomotive, made by Richard Trevithick, first operated on 21 February 1804, three years after the road locomotive he made in 1801.
Steam locomotives were first developed in Great Britain during the early 19th century and dominated railway transport until the middle of the 20th century. From the early 1900s they were gradually superseded by electric and diesel locomotives, with full conversions to electric and diesel power beginning from the 1930s. The majority of steam locomotives were retired from regular service by the 1980s, though several continue to run on tourist and heritage lines.

The popular steam engine "Schnaagi Schaagi" is under repair. Therefore the nostalgic steam train running through the Sih Valley is run by the older steam engine "Hansli" supported by the electric locomotive FCe2/4. This video is not only about the steam train running through the beautiful suburban Sihl Valley, but also about the maintenance after a hard days work before being put into the shed. This video shows a lot of interesting details of the steam engine "Hansli" especially during the maintenance part of the video.

A bumpy ride on the old steam train "Schnaaggi Schaaggi". The steam train runs through the Sihl Valley in Switzerland from Sihlwald to Zurich Wiedikon. This cute steam train belongs to a railroad club called "Zuercher Museums Bahn" ZMB. From spring to autumn they run the train every last weekend of a month. Especially railroad fans and children love that train with its 1899 steam engine very much! Enjoy the video! Please like it and share it! http://www.swisstouristspots.com/
Flying around the Sihl river near Brunau station; platform is an AR-Drone with the PX4 Autopilot replacement. A few cuts in the edit to create a clip where the UAV is at least mostly in frame... my camera-person was a park bench with my iphone wedged in between the slats. The day sadly ended with a bit of a crunch (poor piloting largely to blame) though some soild performance proven before that point. Great (mostly) Success!
Einsiedeln is a municipality and district in the canton of Schwyz in Switzerland. The lake (Sihlsee) was created by damming the Sihl river and flooding a section of the upper Sihl valley. The Sihlsee (in English sometimes called Lake Sihl) is an artificial lake in the Swiss canton of Schwyz, near the town of Einsiedeln. The lake was created by damming the river Sihl and flooding a section of the upper Sihl Valley.[1] / Music: http://www.bensound.com The lake feeds the Etzelwerk power station, which is located 5 kilometres (3 mi) to the north-east in Altendorf on the upper section of Lake Zürich (the Obersee) and which supplies electricity to the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). Its concrete dam is 33 metres (108 ft) high and 124 metres (407 ft) m long. The lake is the largest artificial lake of Switzerland in terms of surface with a maximum length of 8.5 kilometres (5 mi) and maximum width of 2.5 kilometres (2 mi). The maximum depth is 17 metres (56 ft), and the lake has an a...
In the late summer and autumn of the year 2005 each Sunday I made a trip to a different municipality of the so called Greater Zurich area. With a complete disregard of weather conditions I descended on those places on my bike, armed with the video camera. While I am fully aware that I probably will never ever become the next Dziga Vertov, I am glad to say that it was fun editing the results in an effort to highlight the essence of the periphery of my home town. Langnau is situated to the south of the city, in the narrow valley of the river Sihl. There is a small wildlife park. Edited to the tunes of Japan Street by Raiz de Pedra.

The Uetliberg is the backyard mountain of Zurich, Switzerland. It offers a great view over the whole City of Zurich, the Lake of Zurich and on a sunny day and clear sky you may even see the panorama of the Swiss Alps. On this special winter day it was snowing, cold and windy. We decided to take a train ride down to Zurich Triemli. This is when this video was created. A video full of quiet forests and snowy trees. Enjoy this winter impressions from comofort of your home!
The Railway Touring Company has 'The Great Britain', Steam Dreams has 'The Cathedrals Explorer', an eight day tour running across England and Wales with a variety of locomotives and destinations. As I was limited to using the train I decided to use the last box on my rail pass for days one and two of the tour. Day one would feature a diesel run from Kensington Olympia to London Victoria. BR(S) Merchant Navy Class 4-6-2 no.35028 'Clan Line' would then take charge from Victoria, running to Exeter St Davids via the Southern Main Line. My location for day one was going to be Grateley, however, after arriving into Basingstoke to change trains only to find my train to Grateley leaving I was stuck with Basingstoke. As you can see in the opening clip it was very windy indeed. As Clan Line had bee...
