Buckler

A buckler (French bouclier 'shield', from Old French bocle, boucle 'boss') is a small shield, 15 to 45 cm (6 in to 18 in) in diameter, gripped in the fist. It was generally used as a companion weapon in hand-to-hand combat during the Medieval and Renaissance periods. Its size made it poor protection against missile weapons (e.g., arrows) but useful in deflecting the blow of an opponent's sword or mace. There are two major forms of medievally documented bucklers. The first is a simple round shield with the fist positioned directly behind the boss with a variety of shapes of face and depths of rim. These could also have projections from the top and bottom as in Hans Talhoffer's Fechtbücher or serrated rings around the boss as in one example in the Wallace Collection. The second major form is a corrugated rectangle as suggested by Achille Marozzo in his Opera Nova.

MS I.33, considered the earliest extant armed-combat manual, (around 1300) contains an early description of a system of combat with buckler and sword.

Synopsis

After failing sentimentally, with his family and at school, Bahta, a 25 years old breakdancer, feels down and, due to the Iraq war, reconsiders his clandestine escape. A rebel and disobedient by nature, the leader of a little breakdancer band, accomplishes many fearless deeds provoking the police’s anger. Wanted, he falls in with fundamentalists. The brainwashing process will not take place without mishaps.

Youp van 't Hek

Joseph Jacobus Maria "Youp" van 't Hek (born 28 February 1954) is a Dutch comedian, author, columnist, singer-songwriter, playwright and critic.

Biography

Youp was born and raised in the Gooi, an upper-class region to the southeast of Amsterdam. He was one of the founding members of Cabaret NAR (Cabaret Jester). In the early 1980s Cabaret NAR success declined and Youp moved on as a solo artist.

His big break came in 1983 on KRO's "De alles is anders-show". His energetic performance made him a household name overnight.

In his 1989 end-of-year show he ridiculed Buckler, a low-alcohol beer brewed by Heineken, so effectively, sales plummeted and the brand was eventually withdrawn from the market. Youp has often cited this as the best joke in his career and has subsequently referred to it in all his retrospective shows.

Youp van 't Hek is the brother of field hockey international Tom van 't Hek.
