The Mosuo women of southwest China belong to a small ethnic minority that live beyond the strictures of mainstream Chinese culture. Mosuo women don't marry in the traditional sense. They practice what they call a "walking marriage" in which a woman may invite a man to spend the night but he has to leave her house by daybreak. Any resulting children are raised by the woman and her family.

Beautifully shot and featuring intimate interviews, this short documentary offers a rare glimpse into a society virtually unheard of 10 years ago and now often misrepresented in the media.
Mosuo women control their own finances and do not marry or live with partners; they practice what they call "walking marriage." A man may be invited into a woman's hut to spend a "sweet night," but must leave by daybreak. While tourism has brought wealth and 21st century conveniences to this remote area, it has also introduced difficult challenges to the Mosuo culture -- from pollution in the lake, to the establishment of brothels, to mainstream ideas about women, beauty and family.
This finely wrought film is a sensitive portrayal of extraordinary women struggling to hold on to their extraordinary society.

This clip was filmed in the Louisiade Archipelago (a remote part of Papua New Guinea) by ecocitizenaustralia.com.au during a month long expedition on a traditional sailing canoe (sailau) named Hex. Hex is primarily used for trading between villages throughout the Louisiades. We were priviledged to spend time with a great group of Louisiade locals who took us in and showed us a small glimpse into their lives. This unprecedented expedition was a first for both passengers and crew. In this remote and relatively untouched part of the world sailaus still play a major role in transport, trade, fishing and communication.

Vanatinai or Tagula (formerly called Sudest) is a volcanic island in the south-east of the Louisiade Archipelago within Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea. The reef fringed island is approximately 360 kilometres (220 mi) south-east of New Guinea. With an area of 865.7 square kilometres (334.2 sq mi), it is the largest island of the archipelago. Vanatinai town, the main settlement, is located on the north-west coast. The population of the island was about 2,300 in 1978. The principal export is copra.
The island is 63 kilometres (39 mi) long, stretching north-west-southeast, and up to 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) km wide. A wooded mountain range runs through the length of the island, with the summit, Mount Riu (806 m) near the center. The most important peaks of the range are, from west to east:
The island was the site of a gold rush that peaked in 1889. Gold was found in nearly all of the island's water courses.

Peter Gabriel
Peter Brian Gabriel (born 13 February 1950) is an English singer-songwriter, musician and humanitarian activist who rose to fame as the original lead singer and flautist of the progressive rock band Genesis. After leaving Genesis in 1975, Gabriel went on to a successful solo career, with "Solsbury Hill" his first single. His 1986 album, So, is his most commercially successful, and is certified triple platinum in the UK and five times platinum in the U.S. The album's biggest hit, "Sledgehammer", won a record nine MTV Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards, and it remains the most played music video in the history of MTV.
Gabriel has been a champion of world music for much of his career. He co-founded the WOMAD festival in 1982. He has continued to focus on producing and promoting world music through his Real World Records label. He has also pioneered digital distribution methods for music, co-founding OD2, one of the first online music download services. Gabriel has been involved in numerous humanitarian efforts. In 1980, he released the anti-apartheid single "Biko". He has participated in several human rights benefit concerts, including Amnesty International's Human Rights Now! tour in 1988, and co-founded the WITNESS human rights organisation in 1992. Gabriel developed The Elders with Richard Branson, which was launched by Nelson Mandela in 2007.

This clip was filmed in the Louisiade Archipelago (a remote part of Papua New Guinea) by ecocitizenaustralia.com.au during a month long expedition on a traditional sailing canoe (sailau) named Hex. Hex is primarily used for trading between villages throughout the Louisiades. We were priviledged to spend time with a great group of Louisiade locals who took us in and showed us a small glimpse into their lives. This unprecedented expedition was a first for both passengers and crew. In this remote and relatively untouched part of the world sailaus still play a major role in transport, trade, fishing and communication.
