Anarchist Speed Dating

Date and Time:
Fri, 14/02/2014 - 7:30pm to 9:30pm
Location:

Black Rose - 22 Enmore Rd, Newtown

Something different for Valentine's Day... the organisers of the Sydney Anarchist Bookfair present Anarchist Speed Dating! From 7.30pm at Black Rose - 22 Enmore Road, Newtown.

First held in London a few years back this one-off event was a suprise hit, even grabbing the attention of the BBC, who were quite taken by the idea! (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7888016.stm)

Now the organisers have brought this special event to Australian shores.

In the anarchist spirit of free love Anarchist Speed Dating is open to all... gay or straight, bi or queer, pan or trans, the monogamous and the polyamorous alike, and everyone in between.

Forget the corporate circus of 'commercial love day' and instead enjoy a free-spirited celebration of love among friends and lovers you've not yet met.

Come along to Anarchist Speed Dating; reclaim Valentine's Day as a day of free love; meet new people, make friends and and find new love.

As Emma Goldman once wrote, "Love, the strongest and deepest element in all life, the harbinger of hope, of joy, of ecstasy; love, the defier of all laws, of all conventions; love, the freest, the most powerful moulder of human destiny".

Entry is by donation, all proceeds go to support Sydney's first anarchist bookfair.

Poster archive digitisation

We need your help to preserve our rare political poster collectionJura has an archive of thousands of radical political posters dating back 40 years. Many of the posters have huge political and artistic significance. Many are the only surviving copy.

Artists and collectives represented include Earthworks, Dobie Gillis, Nosey, Possum, Toby Zoates, Redback Graphix and Without Authority. Many worked out of the famous 'Tin Sheds'. You can learn more here:

At Jura we're working hard to preserve this important collection, but the ravages of time, mould, and silverfish constantly threaten their survival. As such, it's imperative to digitally document the posters for posterity. We have begun this process: volunteers have spent hundreds of hours sorting and organising posters for digitisation. Now we want to take high-quality photos of the 1,500 most important posters, using a professional studio. But this is expensive. It may cost as much as $3,000.

We need your help to raise funds to take the photographs. Please make a donation now. Any amount, small or large, will be appreciated. You can deposit directly into our bank account:
Name: Jura Books Libertarian Labour
BSB number: 062193
Account number: 10204881
Please include the reference 'digitisation', and email us to let us know you've sent a donation. Alternatively, you can use paypal, post a cheque payable to Jura Books (please include a note explaining what it's for), or donate cash in person at Jura during opening hours.

For inspiration, check out this 7 minute video from the US Center for the Study of Political Graphics.

The CSPG has preserved over 80,000 social movement posters. At Jura we’re inspired by CSPG - we want to preserve our poster collection - with your help.

UPDATE: As of February 2014, we have recieved the following donations from wonderful supporters:

$30 (from RS)

$300 (from 'Jura is sky blue')

Anarchist Bookfair - Sydney's first ever!

Date and Time:
Sat, 22/03/2014 - 10:30am to 5:00pm
Location:

Addison Road Community Center, Marrickville. Gumbramorra Hall

In association with Jura Books, Black Rose, and other anarchists, the Sydney Anarchist Bookfair collective is organising Sydney's first ever Anarchist Bookfair.

We aim to have over 50 stalls on the day including publishers, zine producers, radical t shirt designers, anarchist groups, and various campaign groups distributing free information on everything from community gardens to indigenous rights.

Several keynote speakers will discuss various topics of interest in our speaker’s corner, held in the garden outside the main hall, and several workshops will be held throughout the day on anarchist politics.

There will also be food stalls cook up some tasty treats and a childcare corner to help make it possible for families to come along.

Anarchist Bookfairs began in London over 30 years ago and have since spread across the globe, including Australia’s shores with our comrades in Melbourne now planning their fourth annual event. Anarchist Bookfairs are a chance to find out about and discuss libertarian ideas, attend workshops and hear speeches on anarchist history and politics, discover new, local campaigns on wide range of issues, and of course, buy books.

The Sydney Anarchist Bookfair will take place on Saturday 22nd March, between 10.30am and 5pm, at the main hall of Addison Road Community Centre. We hope you can come along!
