Discrete Mathematical Structures, Lecture 4.3: Partially ordered sets.
A partially ordered set (poset) is a set P equipped with a binary relation that is reflexive, anti-symmetric, and transitive. We begin with a number of simple concepts involving posets: comparable vs. incomparable elements, minimal, minimum, maximal, and maximum, elements, covering relation, chains and anti-chains, and extensions. Then we present a number of examples of posets, including power sets, partitions, acyclic directed graphs, divisors of n, trees, and strongly connected components of a directed graphs. We conclude by showing an application of posets to scheduling problems from operations research -- the Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) and Critical Path Method (CPM).

A partially ordered set (poset) is a set P equipped with a binary relation that is reflexive, anti-symmetric, and transitive. We begin with a number of simple concepts involving posets: comparable vs. incomparable elements, minimal, minimum, maximal, and maximum, elements, covering relation, chains and anti-chains, and extensions. Then we present a number of examples of posets, including power sets, partitions, acyclic directed graphs, divisors of n, trees, and strongly connected components of a directed graphs. We conclude by showing an application of posets to scheduling problems from operations research -- the Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) and Critical Path Method (CPM).
