The army claims it has South Waziristan under control, but is it a ticking time bomb of extremism? In a military hospital in Islamabad, hundreds of "profoundly damaged and disabled" soldiers are being treated. They've come from the western tribal belt, where for the last nine years Pakistan has been waging a largely hidden war against extremists. "There has been this double game that has gone on for many years, of Pakistan supporting the NATO presence in Afghanistan and at the same time allowing the Afghan Taliban to operate against the NATO forces", explains Pakistan's foremost expert on Islamists in the region, Ahmed Rashid. He claims the government's duplicity has radicalised a local variant of the Taliban. "There is now a full-scale extremist movement in Pakistan that is trying to overthrow the State." The agents of some of the worst acts of global terrorism inhabit this remote frontier. Yet many local villagers claim life under the Taliban "was normal" and "nobody was afraid". They argue the army intervention in the region has only been destructive. In an attempt to win hearts and minds, the army has opened a high school for girls, which aid workers argue is "critical for countering extremism". However Pakistan's Taliban vow they're determined "to escalate the war". Afghanistan\'s 2014 election is considered a key test for the country\'s ability to carry out a peaceful transfer of power and an indicator for the country\'s future political stability after international forces withdraw. Sharon Behn reports on one woman, Fawzia Koofi, hoping to make history in that vote.

Anti-government protesters made their presence felt in Thailand\'s national elections, forcing the closure of some polling stations in 13 of Bangkok\'s 33 constituencies, as the country\'s political crisis deepened.

Voting ended at 08:00 GMT on Sunday but no results will be announced.

Further voting is scheduled for February 23 after problems with advance polling last Sunday, while the ballot in some southern areas may not happen for weeks.

The vast majority of voting stations were open and polling proceeded relatively peacefully, but the risk of violence remained high a day after gun battles in north Bangkok left seven people wounded.

Al Jazeera\'s Scott Heidler reports from Bangkok.

At the 10th Annual Saban Forum, President Barack Obama said Saturday that the United States would allow Iran to retain nuclear enrichment capabilities as part of a final deal to end its weapons program.

But he said requiring Iran to dismantle its entire nuclear program prior to relaxing any sanctions -- as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seeks -- is as pie-in-the-sky as Congress doing exactly what the president wants.

Egypt\' ousted president Mohamed Morsi has questioned the legality of his trial, as he appears before a court for a prison break in 2011.

Morsi and 130 others are accused of the prison break during the uprising against former dictator Hosni Mubarak. The former president told the judges from inside a glass-encased metal case that he remains the country\'s legitimate leader, and that the court itself is illegal. Morsi was flown by helicopter from the Borg al-Arab prison in Alexandria. The trial has now been adjourned until February 22. His other trial on the charge of inciting violence against anti-government protests, will resume on Saturday. The case has been delayed twice since it opened in November. Egypt \'s first democratically-elected president has been implicated in two other cases. The country has been gripped by mass protests since the military toppled him in early July last year.

The Geneva II conference on Syria has officially kicked off in Switzerland. In his opening speech, the UN secretary general has called the talks an opportunity for involved parties to resolve the Syrian crisis.

Delegations from over 40 countries will try to find a way of putting an end to the conflict that has dragged on for nearly three years now. This is the first time that representatives from the Syrian government and foreign-backed opposition sit face-to-face for talks. However, there are already serious doubts about the fruitfulness of the event, with a widening division among the participants on the agenda of the conference. Earlier, the UN chief said Iran was invited to the peace conference, but in a policy u-turn, Ban withdrew his invitation. Russia has said that the talks will look like profanity, without Iran\'s participation.

The Enemy Within: The Pakistan Taliban. With rare access to a deeply troubled corner of Pakistan, this report looks at Pakistan's war with the Taliban. For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=65884&bid;=2 Out of bounds for most Pakistanis, this report gains rare access to a deeply troubled corner of Pakistan. Syria Conflict: Strike On Aleppo Market on Saturday 'Kills 21' - 28 Dec

Syria Conflict: Strike On Aleppo Market 'Kills 21' - 28 Dec A Syrian government airstrike on a crowded market in the northern city of Aleppo has killed at least 21 people, activists say. Videos uploaded by activists showed extensive damage to the market and corpses being pulled from cars. Many more were reported wounded in the strike. Government forces are reported to have killed about 400 people since beginning an aerial offensive in and around Aleppo two weeks ago. Syrian authorities say they are targeting "terrorists", a term the government uses to describe all opposition. The main opposition alliance, the National Coalition, said earlier this week it would not attend a peace conference planned to take place next month in Geneva if the air campaign continued. Human rights groups have condemned the Syrian air force's use of so-called barrel bombs - oil drums or cylinders packed with explosives and shrapnel - saying the targeting is indiscriminate and that the attacks are therefore unlawful. The bombs have hit residential and shopping areas, often killing dozens of civilians, either missing possible military targets or with little indication of any intended military objective, they say. City divided The Syrian conflict began as a peaceful uprising against the authoritarian rule of President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011, but then became a civil war after a violent government crackdown. The UN says more than 100,000 people have been killed in the conflict so far. Aleppo became a major front in the war in mid-2012. The city, Syria's largest and its commercial capital, is now divided between government and rebel-held areas, with large parts of it heavily damaged by the conflict. Also on Saturday, a Norwegian frigate expected to accompany cargo vessels collecting chemical weapons from Syria left the Cypriot port of Limassol. The weapons are due to be taken to the Syrian port of Latakia before being shipped abroad. They will be taken to Italy and then loaded on to a US Navy ship and taken out into international waters, where they will be destroyed in a specially created titanium tank on board. Syria agreed to abandon its chemical arsenal to avert potential US military action after a sarin nerve gas attack in August. The frigate will sail along the Cypriot coast to carry out military drills while it awaits the order to sail to Syria. The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the international body overseeing the destruction of the weapons, said today that it does not expect to meet the 31 December deadline for shipping out the "most critical" chemicals. Egypt' ousted president Mohamed Morsi has questioned the legality of his trial, as he appears before a court for a prison break in 2011. Morsi and 130 others are accused of the prison break during the uprising against former dictator Hosni Mubarak. The former president told the judges from inside a glass-encased metal case that he remains the country's legitimate leader, and that the court itself is illegal. Morsi was flown by helicopter from the Borg al-Arab prison in Alexandria. The trial has now been adjourned until February 22. His other trial on the charge of inciting violence against anti-government protests, will resume on Saturday. The case has been delayed twice since it opened in November. Egypt 's first democratically-elected president has been implicated in two other cases.

Russia has said that the talks will look like profanity, without Iran's participation.
