Edison's Genius (New Jersey) - Dr. Lodge McCammon
50 States Project: a 50-song album about the history, geography, and economic foundation of each state in the U.S. http://lodgemccammon.com/ 1st Verse: New Netherlands explored and settled by the Dutch British took over in a rush handing it over to friends Now New Jersey, split into east and west Half to Sir Carteret, half to Lord Berkeley Oh, both halves unite To make a royal colony, one of the Original 13 Against the British for independence we fight Then ratify the 3rd state by the sea Explanation of the 1st Verse: In the early 1600s the Dutch explored and settled in what is now New Jersey (NJ). They named it New Netherlands. In 1664 the British took control of New Netherlands and renamed it New Jersey, after the isle of Jersey off the coast of England. King Charles II gave NJ to his brother, The Duke of York. The Duke of York granted the NJ Province to two of his friends - Sir George Carteret and Lord John Berkeley. In 1676 Lord Berkeley sold his half of NJ to the Quakers because he was finding it difficult to collect money from the early settlers. NJ was split in half, east and west. In 1702 the two halves were united and NJ became a Royal Colony. NJ signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and played a large role in the Revolutionary War. In 1787 NJ was the 3rd to ratify the new Constitution - making it the 3rd state in the U.S. Chorus: Stop the New Jersey Line War Our northern boundary is fixed Then Washington crossed the Delaware To beat the British Crossroads of the revolution, we are incandescent How do we make this Garden State glow? Edison's genius Explanation of the Chorus: From 1701-1765 NJ was involved in the New York-New Jersey Line War. This was a series of skirmishes that happened because of the undefined border in the north between NY and NJ. This was mitigated by the fact that NJ was ruled by New York from 1708-1738. In 1765 Britain defined the northern border of NJ. NJ is considered to be the "Crossroads of the Revolution" because of the strategic role the area played. NJ was the site of major battles such as Trenton and Princeton, it was the Revolutionary Army's winter quarters, and it was the destination of Washington in the famous painting of his crossing the Delaware River. In 1879 the commercially viable incandescent light bulb illuminated NJ. Thomas Edison was the one who designed the first commercially sold bulb. Edison was one of the many genius industrialists that caused the rapid growth of NJ. The nickname of NJ is the Garden State. Edison's famous quote: "Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration." This is particularly fitting to him because he didn't invent the lightbulb, but worked hard toward creating a commercially viable version of it....this incandescent light changed the world. 2nd Verse: Will Paterson said we are small but great Equal votes per state? Yeah, a New Jersey Plan This upper house, represents our valley and ridge From the northern Mountains and High Point, kids South to the old mines and highlands Then to the piedmont smooth with sediments Oh, two coastal plains Give us our beaches and our garden name Explanation of the 2nd Verse: William Paterson was a representative who proposed the New Jersey Plan in 1787 at the Constitutional Convention. This plan suggested that each state should have equal representation in the government (as opposed to the Virginia Plan where representation is determined by the population of the state). The New Jersey Plan paved the way for the creation of the Upper House in Congress (the Senate). There are five geographical areas of NJ (from north to south): The Valley and Ridge Mountains in the north (including the Kittatinny Mountains and High Point - the highest point in NJ at 1803 ft.) The highlands are rocky terrain. This is where many of the old iron mines are found. The Piedmont is the central part of NJ and has smooth land with sediments (and some rocky parts). The Inner Coastal Plain is lowlands and rolling hills. This area is ideal for agriculture, giving NJ the nickname "The Garden State." The Outer Coastal Plain (south NJ) has dry/sandy soil and much less agriculture. However, this "Jersey Shore" has a long stretch of coast and many beaches. Bridge: Liberty and prosperity From Trenton on the Delaware River to the sea Common violet, goldfinch and red oak are free To thrive from Atlantic City to Princeton, Princeton Explanation of the Bridge: http://tinyurl.com/EdisonsGenius 3rd Verse: Crops grow 'til our industrial revolution Then we cradled this solution - brought us Standard Oil Started with silk, textiles and railroad equipment Colt's firearms patent, much less variable Edison's lab at Menlo Park Commercial filament here to light the dark Oh, for the World Wars We manufactured battleships and destroyers Explanation of the 3rd Verse: http://tinyurl.com/EdisonsGenius Copyright © 2013 Dr. Lodge McCammon. Agriculture was the key development in the rise of sedentary human civilization, whereby farming of domesticated species created food surpluses that nurtured the development of civilization. The study of agriculture is known as agricultural science. The history of agriculture dates back thousands of years, and its development has been driven and defined by greatly different climates, cultures, and technologies. However, all farming generally relies on techniques to expand and maintain the lands that are suitable for raising domesticated species. For plants, this usually requires some form of irrigation, although there are methods of dryland farming. Livestock are raised in a combination of grassland-based and landless systems, in an industry that covers almost one-third of the world's ice- and water-free area. In the developed world, industrial agriculture based on large-scale monoculture has become the dominant system of modern farming, although there is growing support for sustainable agriculture, including permaculture and organic agriculture. Until the Industrial Revolution, the vast majority of the human population labored in agriculture. Pre-industrial agriculture was typically subsistence agriculture/ Self-sufficiency in which farmers raised most of their crops for their own consumption instead of cash crops for trade.. Modern agronomy, plant breeding, agrochemicals such as pesticides and fertilizers, and technological improvements have sharply increased yields from cultivation, but at the same time have caused widespread ecological damage and negative human health effects... The major agricultural products can be broadly grouped into foods, fibers, fuels, and raw materials. Specific foods include cereals (grains), vegetables, fruits, oils, meat and spices. Fibers include cotton, wool, hemp, silk and flax. Raw materials include lumber and bamboo. Other useful materials are produced by plants, such as resins, dyes, drugs, perfume, biofuels and ornamental products such as cut flowers and nursery plants. Over one third of the world's workers are employed in agriculture, second only to the services sector, although the percentages of agricultural workers in developed countries has decreased significantly over the past several centuries...- published: 04 Dec 2013

Rain in New Jersey While Driving
We were driving through New Jersey on our East Coat road trip and it started crapping it down. Here's some of the crazy rain as we were driving through it! It is bordered on the north and east by the U.S. state of New York, on the southeast and south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by Pennsylvania, and on the southwest by Delaware. Newark was the fourth poorest of U. S. cities with over 250,000 residents in 2008, but New Jersey as a whole has the second highest median household income. Secretary of Education Rick Rosenberg, appointed by Governor Jon Corzine, created the Education Advancement Initiative (EAI) to increase college admission rates by 10% for New Jersey's high school students, decrease dropout rates by 15%, and increase the amount of money devoted to schools by 10%. Rosenberg retracted this plan when criticized for taking the money out of healthcare to fund this initiative. The State of the Union is the address presented by the President of the United States to a joint session of the United States Congress, typically delivered annually. The address not only reports on the condition of the nation but also allows presidents to outline their legislative agenda (for which they need the cooperation of Congress) and their national priorities. Lincoln is a 2012 American epic historical drama film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg, starring Daniel Day-Lewis as United States President Abraham Lincoln and Sally Field as Mary Todd Lincoln.[4] The film is based in part on Doris Kearns Goodwin's biography Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, and covers the final four months of Lincoln's life, focusing on the President's efforts in January 1865 to have the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution passed by the United States House of Representatives. Filming began October 17, 2011,[5] and ended on December 19, 2011.[6] Lincoln premiered on October 8, 2012 at the New York Film Festival. The film was released theatrically on November 9, 2012, in select cities and widely released on November 16, 2012, in the United States by DreamWorks through Disney's Touchstone Pictures distribution label.[7] The film was released on January 25, 2013, in the United Kingdom, with distribution in international territories, including the U.K., by 20th Century Fox.[8] Lincoln received widespread critical acclaim, with major praise directed to Day-Lewis' performance. In December 2012, the film was nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards including Best Motion Picture -- Drama, Best Director for Spielberg and winning Best Actor (Motion Picture -- Drama) for Day-Lewis. At the 85th Academy Awards, the film was nominated for twelve Academy Awards including Best Picture; it won for Best Production Design and Best Actor for Day-Lewis.[9] The film was also a commercial success, having grossed more than $275 million at the box office. An amendment is a formal or official change made to a law, contract, constitution, or other legal document. It is based on the verb to amend, which means to change. Amendments can add, remove, or update parts of these agreements. They are often used when it is better to change the document than to write a new one. A toilet is a sanitation fixture used primarily for the disposal of human excrement and urine, often found in a small room referred to as a toilet/bathroom/lavatory. Flush toilets, which are common in many parts of the world, may be connected to a nearby septic tank or more commonly in urban areas via "large" (3--6 in or 7.6--15 cm) sewer pipe connected to a sewerage pipe system. The water and waste from many different sources is piped in large pipes to a more distant sewage treatment plant. Chemical toilets are used in mobile and many temporary situations where there is no access to sewerage, dry toilets, including pit toilets and composting toilet require no or little water with excreta being removed manually or composted in situ.- published: 22 Sep 2013
