Dhanbad, Jan. 31: Chief minister Hemant Soren today inaugurated the state’s first integrated check post at Chirkunda on Jharkhand-Bengal border, in a move that will check leakages and boost revenue collections.
Speaking at the inaugural function at Chirkunda, around 40km from Dhanbad district headquarters, the chief minister said the government would be able to save around Rs 4-5 crore annually with the help of the Rs 4.5-crore check-post.
Hemant added the computerised system could now be monitored directly from Ranchi. “Officials will now can keep tabs on total levy collections as well as quantity of goods passing through the check post,” he said, adding this would prevent false entry of data.
The chief minister further said genuine traders would also have reason to cheer as they would no more receive any illegitimate demands from corrupt officials.
Elaborating on the needs to switch over to a hi-tech system, Hemant said, “This check post is a step towards preventing tax evasion and thereby increasing the revenue reserve.”
Earlier, the chief minister, accompanied by chief secretary R.S. Sharma and secretary (commercial tax) Mast Ram Meena, arrived in Dhanbad in a helicopter from Ranchi and then went to Chirkunda by road. After spending around half an hour at the venue, he returned to the state capital. Animal husbandry Minister Mannan Mallick was also present.
Apart from Chirkunda, integrated check posts have been proposed in bordering areas of Chas (Bokaro), Murisemar (Garhwa), Gumla, Baharagora (East Singhbhum) Pakur, Chouparan (Hazaribagh), Chaibasa (West Singhbhum) and in Simdega.
The check posts are aimed to act as an effective scanning mechanism to prevent slips in payment of revenues to at least five major departments — commercial taxes, forests, transport, mines and agriculture — besides opening them for use by the state home department for security purposes.
