Fresh Produce Tour with Curtis

Curtis Fresh Produce TourToday Curtis Stone set off on a tour across Australia to celebrate great Aussie grown fresh produce and the communities that grow it. From the Lockyer Valley in Queensland to the Goulburn Valley in Victoria and the Riverland region in South Australia, Curtis will meet over 100 Coles growers, representing 20 farms and we’ll be sharing his updates & photos here each day…

Day One:
The first stop on the fresh produce tour was Rugby Farm in Queensland. What began as a humble family farming business back in 1912 has now grown into one of Australia’s biggest suppliers of fresh produce, employing a total of 500 employees across seven properties. They’ve been supplying us fresh local produce such as corn, beans, broccoli, lettuce, cauliflower, watermelon, wombok and baby corn for 15 years. “We want to feed Australians good, wholesome, nutritional foods.” Matt Hood, Owner Rugby Farm said.

Curtis started the day off by having breakfast with Matt & the team and learning about their farm. After breakfast he headed onto Coles to pick up some fresh fruit & veg to deliver to a local school and talk to the kids about eating fresh fruit & veg.

Day Two:
The second stop on the tour was a visit to the Mitolo Group Farm in Waikerie, South Australia today. The farm has over thirty five years’ experience of growing, harvesting and packing potatoes and onions. They produce over 47,000 tonnes of potatoes and 11,000 onions per year for our customers… Yes, that’s a lot of spuds!

Curtis and some of our team members from SA & WA met with Dave Mitolo for an exclusive tour of the farm and to learn about how Dave & his team worked with us to develop the exclusive to Coles, Carisma potato. This is the only potato in Australia to carry the official low GI symbol from the Glycemic Index Foundation (something we’re both very proud of). After the tour of the farm, Curtis headed onto Waikerie Primary School to meet some budding chefs before heading onto meet some surprised customers & team members at our Gawler store.

Day Three:
The third and final stop on the tour was to Mercuri Farms in Victoria’s Goulburn Valley for juicy tomatoes. More than 50 years ago, Don Mercuri started growing tomatoes in Goulburn Valley and 25 years later, he was supplying us with a couple of pallets of tomatoes each day. This year Don’s son Tony, along with his brother Phil and sons Damien and Donny, will supply our stores with 350,000 cartons of tomatoes, producing more than five million kilograms!

“The growth of the business is something everyone involved with is proud of. It’s a business my grandfather started so we take pride in building on his hard work” says Damien Mercuri. In season, they employ more than 200 pickers, packers and field workers, drawn largely from the local community.

Curtis toured the farm with the Mercuri brothers and got to sample tasty, fresh tomatoes direct from the tree.  The Today Show even dropped by to chat to Curtis before he headed onto our Kialla store to meet our customers chat about all things fresh & tasty. The last stop of the day was to Tatura Primary School, where as you can see from the photo, Curtis received a very enthusiastic welcome.

Fresh Fact: We’re proud to say we now source 15,000 extra truckloads of Fresh Australian fruit and vegetables annually, compared to five years ago.
