Syrian Activist on Ghouta Attack: "I Haven't Seen Such Death in My Whole Life"
http://www.democracynow.org - The Syrian government is facing growing pressure to allow an international probe of an alleged chemical weapons attack on the outskirts of Damascus. The Syrian opposition says government forces fired poisonous gas into rebel-held neighborhoods of Ghouta, killing hundreds of people. Video posted on YouTube this week shows frantic scenes of overwhelmed hospitals, dead children and countless bodies. If confirmed, it would stand to be the most violent incident in Syria since the rebel uprising began two years ago and one of the worst toxic attacks in decades. The alleged attack occurred just days after U.N. inspectors arrived in the country to investigate previous attacks. We're joined from Syria by Razan Zaitouneh, a lawyer and human rights activist who works with the Human Rights Violation Documentation Center. We also speak with Patrick Cockburn, a longtime Middle East correspondent for the London Independent who recently returned from reporting in Syria. "We couldn't believe our eyes," Zaitouneh says of witnessing the attack's aftermath. "I haven't seen such death in my whole life." Syrian government forces now in control of Homs' Khaldiyeh district
Destruction is everywhere here; this is the Khaldiyeh district in the central Syrian city of Homs. The Syrian army managed to retake this district after fierce fighting that went on for over a month. This neighborhood was the main stronghold for foreign-backed insurgents in Homs, and their main operation room in the city. These destroyed buildings hide a lot of secrets; more than seven-hundred hostages were said to have been kept by insurgents in Khaldiyeh but none of them was found yet. The advance in Khaldiyeh means that Syrian military units managed to split in half insurgent-controlled areas of Homs. This achievement by the Syrian army can be compared to their taking control of the strategic town of Qusyar at least in its effect on the morale of the fighters on both sides. This mosque is the last point of Khaldiyeh and the first step in a new phase of life in Homs. This is Khaled Mosque, which is the last point in Khaldiyeh and where the first phase of the military operation ended. The second phase will be in al-Warsheh neighborhood. http://www.presstv.ir/- published: 31 Jul 2013

U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry said that President Barrack Obama was considering a response and signalled that the country will act on Syria. The United States Secretary of State,John Kerry, said that "the indiscriminate slaughter of civilians, the killing of women and children and innocent bystanders by chemical weapons is a moral obscenity. By any standard it is inexcusable and despite the excuses and equivocations that some have manufactured, it is undeniable." Russia, an ally of Syria, has warned against the use of military action from Western nations. The country's Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, said that there is no proof the Damascus government is behind the alleged chemical attacks. Speaking in Moscow he said that the "consequences of external intervention not sanctioned by the international community will only risk worsening the situation in the country." Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has told Russian newspaper "Izvestia" that the accusations that his administration used chemical weapons was politically motivated. The strikes extended the assault by President Bashar Assad's warplanes and helicopters on the embattled city into its tenth day. Several amateur video clips posted online by activists showed the bloody aftermath of the attacks on Sukkari. The footage was authenticated based on an examination by an Associated Press regional expert. Many of the casualties were killed by so-called barrel bombs dropped from helicopters. Barrel bombs are explosive-filled oil drums often rolled out of the back of helicopters with little attempt at hitting a particular target. They are capable of causing widespread casualties and significant damage. Syrian rebels, not government used chemical weapons Russia claims
Last month, the White House announced that they had found evidence that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had used chemical weapons against anti-government rebels, and the US declared that they would begin funding the rebels in the Syrian civil war. But according to a Russian intelligence report, it turns out that the rebels were guilty of using the arms and Russia will hand over the evidence to the UN. Here is the latest on the story. Rebels Defending In Rashidin And Ameria Districts As Syrian Army Advances In Aleppo
A 10-day air offensive by Syrian army against rebel areas of divided Aleppo and nearby villages has killed more than 400 people, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The Syrian army is busy with a major offensive to retake all of Aleppo, currently Aleppo is divided with different districts taken by different groups. Some rebel held areas are even at fight with each other other districts are in hands of pro Syrian government forces and some reports claim Iraqi Shia militias also hold key areas in Aleppo that are being used as supply routes. In December Syrian Army government troops have pushed up their attacks on Aleppo. Rebel held areas have seen a increase of air raids targeting their positions and claim that many fighters and civilians have died during the air raids. For nearly two weeks, President Bashar Assad's warplanes and helicopters have pounded opposition-controlled areas of the divided city. Activists say the aerial assault has killed more than 400 people since it began Dec. 15. The Syrian army is also pushing hard to break any positions occupied by armed groups, government forces attacked militants' positions in al-Marjeh, al-Sukari, al-Salihin, Al-Rashidin And Al-Ameria districts in Aleppo The video shows battles from Al-Rashidin district and Ameria district. According to opposition sources Ameria district was attacked by the Shia Abu Fadl Al-Abbas Brigade. That would change my calculus, that would change my equation." U.S. President Obama speaking on the twentieth of August last year. Since this warning was made, no fewer than 13 alleged chemical attacks have been recorded in Syria, most recently in eastern Ghouta Wednesday. In this context, Barack Obama has a whole range of diplomatic and military options. First, clearly, the facts have to be established. UN inspectors arrived in Syrian capital Damascus on Sunday, to investigate other alleged chemical attacks. The Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki Moon has asked Syrian President Assad for permission to investigate the attack on eastern Ghouta. "I have called on the Syrian government to extend its full cooperation so that the mission can swiftly investigate this most recent incident." Still, the mandate does not allow the UN to ascribe blame for the alleged chemical attacks to one side or the other. So what can be done ? If the suspicions against the Assad regime continue, the United States could push for sanctions at the Security Council of the UN. The risk is always a veto from Russia. Moscow at this stage favours diplomatic pressure to convene an international peace conference. But there's a problem here. The Syrian opposition is fragmented. Next option. At an unofficial level, the United States could enhance its medical and strategic assistance, also offer training and weapons to rebel groups deemed moderate. The Americans have allegedly been doing this for months anyway at camps in Jordan and Turkey. The French daily paper 'Le Figaro' says the first American trained fighters, supervised by Israeli, Jordanian and CIA commandos started military action in southern Syria on August the 17th. Other option. Direct military intervention to establish a no-fly zone. Costly financially - troops would be needed to bomb Syrian airports - and costly politically because this option would require the participation of the UK, France, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE to confer international legitimacy. And Russia and China would almost certainly oppose such military intervention. Plus, this military option could pave the way for the destruction of part of the Syrian chemical arsenal. With the attendant risks. Military sites would become uncontrolled, even uncontrollable, which could allow jihadist extremists possible access to chemical weapons. Final option, do nothing. Images from amateur videos posted on social networks - and so not independently verified - allegedly show the aftermath in a street in the rebel held Shaar district. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights - whose information is provided by activists on the ground - said at least two children died in the latest attack. On Sunday it was reported 76 people including 28 children died in a government backed assault from the air. Helicopters dropped barrels packed with explosives on areas of the city.
