Japan Endless Discovery The land of Rising Sun
Japan, Land of the Rising Sun Japan is formed by an arc of islands lying easternmost of the Asian continent. The Japanese archipelago consists of four main islands Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu and about 4,000 smaller islands including Okinawa. It stretches for 2,798 km from northeast to southwest. Japan is total land mass makes up only 0.3% of the land portion of the earth's surface, which is slightly less than that of American State of California or the European Nation of Sweden, that more than 127 million people live, as of 2010. Japan is blessed with four distinct seasons and it offers a variety of climates, from temperatures similar to what you would find in UK & Germany in northern island of Hokkaido to the sub-tropical paradise of Okinawa. Spring & Autumn are the best time to visit. The temperatures in Tokyo & Kyoto are very similar and usually hover around a comfortable 20 degrees Celsius (68 in F) with this season. Mid June is start of the rain season and there is rarely a dry day until it ends in late July. Unique Experience in a Ryokan & ONSEN: ONSEN means Hot Springs in Japanese. Over 3,000 hot springs exists spreading though all parts of the country, which every single one has it s own unique water quality and medicinal benefits. Ryokan offers the ultimate Japan experience. In some occasions, you will have chances to see the performances of traditional arts such as Kabuki and graceful dances of Geisha Entertainers, or take a more active role of diving into the culture yourself by participating in a wide range of introductory workshops featuring flower arrangement, the tea ceremony, or the art of wearing a Kimono. Kaleidoscope of contemporary cuisine and entertainment: Great number of places offer such a wide array of eating selections as Japan, so many, in fact, that you would be hard pressed to sample them all during your stay. In addition to Japanese food, you will find cuisines from all corners of the world. Though by no means an exhaustive list, some of the Japanese food you may want to try while in Japan indlude; Kaiseki , Tempra , Shabushabu , Teppan-yaki and Sushi! Japanese fishermen catch giant 8-meter squid
What can you find in the deep freezing seas of northern Japan? Well, one fisherman and his team have come up with a surprise catch while searching for yellow-tail fish. Shige-nori Goto and his crew managed to catch a three-hundred sixty-pound squid. But unfortunately, the giant squid died shortly after, and was sent away for tests at a nearby lab. Experts say it was probably about eight meters long. The largest-ever caught squid measured some eighteen meters from the head to the tentacles. It is mostly near the Japanese archipelago that giant squids make such occasional appearances.- published: 14 Jan 2014

Volcano raises new island off coast of Japan - footage emerges
A volcanic eruption raised an island in the seas to the far south of Tokyo, the Japanese coast guard and earthquake experts say. Advisories from the coast guard and the Japan Meteorological Agency said the islet is 660 feet in diameter. It is just off the coast of Nishinoshima, a small, uninhabited island in the Ogasawara chain, which is also known as the Bonin Islands. The approximately 30 islands are 620 miles south of Tokyo, and along with the rest of Japan are part of the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire. Television footage showed heavy smoke, ash and rocks exploding from the crater, as steam billowed into the sky. A volcanologist with the coast guard, Hiroshi Ito, told the FNN news network that it was possible the new island might be eroded away. "But it also could remain permanently," he said. The last time the volcanos in the area are known to have erupted was in the mid-1970s. Much of the volcanic activity occurs under the sea, which extends thousands of meters deep along the Izu-Ogasawara-Marianas Trench. Japan's chief government spokesman welcomed the news of yet another bit, however tiny, of new territory. "This has happened before and in some cases the islands disappeared," Yoshihide Suga said when asked if the government was planning on naming the new island. "If it becomes a full-fledged island, we would be happy to have more territory." The Japanese archipelago has thousands of islands. In some cases, they help anchor claims to wide expanses of ocean overlying potentially lucrative energy and mineral resources. Japan has plans to build port facilities and transplant fast-growing coral fragments onto Okinotorishima, two rocky outcroppings even further south of Tokyo, to boost its claim in a territorial dispute with China. Connecting the Dots: Greg Dvorak at TEDxWasedaU
Greg Dvorak is an associate professor at Hitotsubashi University, where he focuses on cultural studies and history between the Pacific Islands, Japan, and the United States. As an American who spent his childhood on a US military installation in the Marshall Islands and much of his adult life in Japan, Greg was always curious about the marginalized histories of Marshallese and prewar Japanese communities. His MA and his doctoral work explored these nuanced and contradictory narratives of the Pacific War and the Cold War in Micronesia as they played out in indigenous and colonial representations. With a grant from the Toyota Foundation, in 2010 Greg began Project35 (Project Sango), a grassroots initiative to kindle new non-governmental ties between the Japanese archipelago and its Pacific Island neighborhood. Linking communities through traditional and contemporary arts, Project35 aims to collaborate with Pacific Islanders in overcoming the ravages of the past in pursuit of new, creative solutions to build a peaceful transoceanic community. websites: www.coralproject35.com / www.gregdvorak.com In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
