Web typography refers to the use of fonts on the World Wide Web. When HTML was first created, font faces and styles were controlled exclusively by the settings of each Web browser. There was no mechanism for individual Web pages to control font display until Netscape introduced the <font>
tag in 1995, which was then standardized in the HTML 3.2 specification. However, the font specified by the tag had to be installed on the user's computer or a fallback font, such as a browser's default sans-serif or monospace font, would be used. The first Cascading Style Sheets specification was published in 1996 and provided the same capabilities.
The CSS2 specification was released in 1998 and attempted to improve the font selection process by adding font matching, synthesis and download. These techniques did not gain much use, and were removed in the CSS2.1 specification. However, Internet Explorer added support for the font downloading feature in version 4.0, released in 1997. Font downloading was later included in the CSS3 fonts module, and has since been implemented in Safari 3.1, Opera 10 and Mozilla Firefox 3.5. This has subsequently increased interest in Web typography, as well as the usage of font downloading.
In HTML and XHTML, a font face or font family is the typeface that will be applied by a web browser to some text. The font is relevant for the display of text on the screen, on a printer or another device.
A font family and other presentation attributes of a font may be applied in HTML code in either cascading style sheets (CSS) or the deprecated HTML font
element.
When using CSS to apply a font whose name has whitespace in it, use quotes or single quotes to delimit the name.
In CSS, a font-family (or face in HTML) consists of a set of related fonts, grouped as font families. For example, the Times family includes different font sizes, styles (like roman and italic), and weight (like regular and bold).
The web browser will only be able to apply a font if it is available on the system on which it operates, which is not always the case. HTML code writers may list in preferential order font families to use when rendering text. The font list is separated by commas (as shown above). To avoid unexpected results, the last font family on the font list should be one of the five generic families which are by default always available in HTML and CSS. In the absence of a font being found, the web browser will use its default font, which may be a user-defined one. Depending on the web browser, a user can in fact override the font defined by the code writer. This may be for personal taste reasons, but may also be because of some physical limitation of the user, such as the need for a larger font size or the avoidance of certain colors.
A compass is an instrument used for navigation and orientation that shows direction relative to the geographic "cardinal directions", or "points". Usually, a diagram called a compass rose, shows the directions north, south, east, and west as abbreviated initials marked on the compass. When the compass is used, the rose can be aligned with the corresponding geographic directions, so, for example, the "N" mark on the rose really points to the north. Frequently, in addition to the rose or sometimes instead of it, angle markings in degrees are shown on the compass. North corresponds to zero degrees, and the angles increase clockwise, so east is 90 degrees, south is 180, and west is 270. These numbers allow the compass to show azimuths or bearings, which are commonly stated in this notation.
The magnetic compass was first invented as a device for divination as early as the Chinese Han Dynasty (since about 206 BC), and later adopted for navigation by the Song Dynasty Chinese during the 11th century. The use of a compass is recorded in Western Europe and in Persia around the early 13th century.
Compass is the sixth album by the American electronic act Assemblage 23. It was released on October 1, 2009 on Metropolis Records and Accession Records.
All songs written, performed and produced by Tom Shear
Compass is a public art work by American artist Gail Simpson, located on the east side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The painted alumnium sculpture was commissioned by the Eastside Business Improvement District #20 to serve as a gateway for pedestrians and vehicular traffic entering the North Avenue commercial zone. A tall stainless steel light post salvaged from the demolition of Milwaukee's Park East Freeway is surrounded by a colorful array of painted aluminum signs that protrude in a spiral formation. Each sign has a distinctive shape and word cut out in a unique typeface intended to reflect the history and character of the neighborhood. The artwork is located in the traffic median on the east side of the North Avenue Bridge. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel architecture critic Whitney Gould called the project, "part sculpture, part signpost."
Why does no one know how to use one of the world’s best-selling compasses? The problem stems from two main issues: the extremely poor quality of the instructions provided (from which it appears that even the manufacturers don’t know how to use their own compasses) and the fact that these compasses are essentially outdated designs from the 1930s and early 1950s. These older models are rarely used today by experienced navigators, leading to a gap in practical knowledge and effective usage. Poor Instructions The instructions that come with these compasses are notoriously bad. They often lack clarity, detail, and proper illustrations, making it difficult for users to understand how to use the compass correctly. This is a significant barrier, especially for beginners who rely on these instruc...
