Anticholinergic Adventure Cruise (H. Lapides & T. Beatty)
* This video is original material by H. Lapides and T. Beatty. Use this video to help you understand anticholinergic drugs! After viewing the video of the "Anti-cholinergic Adventure Cruise" -- please consider the following questions. You may also wish to read the questions first, and then look for hints within the skit. Anti - Cholinergic Questions: 1. Would you use an anti-cholinergic for treating tachycardia or bradycardia? 2. What is the anti-cholinergic effect on bowels? (*think both muscle and sphincter). 3. The captain of the Anti-cholinergic Adventure cruise begins makes note that those aboard his ship will "get their heart rates up," and "dilate their pupils." Why would these types of responses occur on an anti-cholinergic drug? What other peripheral responses might you expect to see? What other class of drugs would have similar types of responses? 4. What are Drugs that have anti-cholinergic side effects? 5. What groups of people are more sensitive to anti-cholinergic drugs? What does this mean about the doses they should receive? 6. Use the characters from this skit as exemplars, what are the indications for anti-cholinergics? 7. What are some anti-cholinergic stimulation? Can you describe the mechanism by which these would occur? (See the "Later That Day" portion.) 8. In the skit, Atty was very hot but was not sweating. Why could this be a problematic anti-cholinergic effect?- published: 04 Sep 2013

Acute Anticholinergic Syndrome
Acute Anticholinergic Syndrome
When a significant amount of an anticholinergic is taken into the body, a toxic reaction known as acute anticholinergic syndrome may result. This may happen accidentally or intentionally as a consequence of recreational drug use. Anticholinergic drugs are usually considered the least enjoyable by experienced recreational drug users, possibly due to the lack of euphoria caused by them. In terms of recreational use, these drugs are commonly referred to as deliriants. Because most users do not enjoy the experience, they do not use it again, or do so very rarely. The risk of addiction is low in the anticholinergic class. A common mnemonic for the main features of anticholinergic syndrome is the following: Hot as a hare (hyperthermia) Blind as a bat (dilated pupils) Dry as a bone (dry skin) Red as a beet (vasodilation) Mad as a hatter (hallucinations/agitation) The bowel and bladder lose their tone and the heart goes on alone (ileus, urinary retention, tachycardia)- published: 27 Oct 2013
