Tamil Nadu State Primary Cooperative Agriculture Bank All Employees Union members staging a protest in Karur on Monday The functioning of fair price shops run by the Cooperative Department was affected on Monday because of protest by employees and workers who demanded that the State government ensure good work atmosphere. According to a report, most of the 1,131 fair price shops, including 400 part-time shops, remained closed in the district as the employees participated in the demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Monday. It was a part of the Statewide call by the Tamil Nadu State Primary Cooperative Agricultural Bank All Employees Association. They were protesting against the recent incidents of suicide by a few fair price shop employees apparently due to “work pressure” and “torture” by the higher officials. R. Duraisamy, district president, Tamil Nadu State Primary Cooperative Agricultural Bank All Employees Association, presided over the agitation. The protesters, including women, raised slogans, demanding Rs. 10 lakh compensation to the kith and kin of dead workers. They demanded that the State government to take action against those responsible for the suicide of the fair price shop employees. They alleged that senior officials of Cooperative, Revenue, and Labour departments had been carrying out raids on fair price shops.
