The song didn't make it onto the record, unfortunately, so I recorded it myself for the 2009 Krantz Carlock Lefebvre album. I used Beck's name as the title because it was inspired by his style of blues playing. He has such a distinct way of expressing pure individualism within many different variants of the blues form, retaining the integrity of the idiom while, at times, going about as far out as anyone could imagine. Likewise, this tune is an abstraction of the blues, because I allow my ear to follow whatever it's attracted to. If I hear one of those weird open-string chords that is undefined, harmonically speaking, it adds balance to the "muscle" of the tune, which is provided by the unison figures played together by guitar and bass. There are hard-edged groove elements that are blended with open-ended suspended chords, and that type of mix is really attractive to me. This also fits into my musical impression of Beck, who plays a lot of stuff that is outside the standard vocabulary but often does so within the context of straight-ahead blues and rock.- published: 20 Dec 2013

Most of my songs start as a germ of an idea that comes to me during an improvisation. I'll have a cool little nugget of "stuff" that catches my interest enough that I am inspired to investigate it further and perhaps forge a composition from it. I think that for many of us, a new song idea springs from a moment of improvisation. From there, it becomes a question of how to take a cool little riff and expand it to something that can actually be played by a band. That's the challenging part.- published: 20 Dec 2013

I'm sure most of you have read or been told at some point that practicing to a metronome is an important thing for guitar players to do on a regular basis. I think that practicing with a metronome can reap many benefits and have spent a lot of time doing it over the years. Although I've always felt that my sense of "time"—my ability to play at a steady tempo and in a groove "pocket" without speeding up or slowing down—has been pretty good, I realized at one point that it was not quite as good as I wanted it to be. So I spent a considerable amount of effort really focusing on that aspect of my playing, and I think there are ways to practice with a metronome that are more beneficial than others.- published: 20 Dec 2013
