Human Development Paradigm:Putting People at the Centre of the Development Process
The first Human Develop-ment Report
written up in 1990 was a landmark event
which ushered in the focus on the Human
Development concept as a holistic vision
of development, placing people at the centre
of all develop-ment efforts away from the reigning
philosophy up until then that human develop-ment was
essentially about an individual living a long and healthy life,
being edu-cated and having access to the resources needed
for a decent standard of living. In 1990, Mahbub ul Haq and Amartya
Sen set the way forward for new thinking. They forwarded the
most critical elements of the pro-cess of Human Develop-ment
away from wealth being the only means to calculate how well people
were doing in life..
