New UN report reflects voices of more than 1 million people on development issues

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UNDP Administrator Helen Clark launch "A Million Voices: The World We Want" report at press conference. UN Photo/Paulo Filgueiras 10 September 2013 – The voices of more than 1 million people all over the world were gathered to produce a United Nations report launched today that reflects their priorities concerning development issues, which will help Member States shape the post-2015 sustainability agenda. The report, A Million Voices: The World We Want is the result of 88 national consultations, 11 thematic dialogues and an online global survey, which were carried out over the past year. The report is meant to help Member States draft a successor framework to the anti-poverty targets known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which will expire in 2015.

 


United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)Development Forum Tuesday, July 9th 2013

UNDP advocates for change and connects countries to knowledge, experience and resources to assist people in building a better life. In an effort to provide solutions to national development challenges, UNDP works closely with governments, both resident and non-resident donors, civil society and the private sector. To enhance, promote and ensure relevance and strategic positioning of The Gambia country office and as a tool to inform policy decisions and stimulate intellectual discussions, a development forum was recently organized. It comprised of the deliverance of a paper by a lead expert in the field of Debt Management followed by discussions from two panel members from the Government and Private sector perspectives on Debt Management. Policy makers and debt managers from the public and private sectors, development partners, representatives of civil society organizations, the academia and bilateral donors and multilateral development banks were all in attendance. The opening remark was delivered by Mr. Abdou Touray, UNDP on behalf of the Resident Representative a.i. He welcomed everyone to the august gathering and stated that the attendance level signified “interest in this very topical issue confronting all countries in particular least Developed Countries like The Gambia.” He confirmed that UNDP works closely with various stakeholders to provide solutions to national development challenges. He further elaborated on the structure and format of the Development Forum – delivery of a paper by an expert and a discussion panel of experts who provide their views and perspectives on the issue. Mr. Touray noted the importance of the selected topic as it is a critical issue facing Least Developing Countries (LDCs) as “debt sustainability has been a challenging journey for some countries.” In addition, he enumerated that while “borrowing is not bad as all countries of the world do so but, it must be sustainable and well targeted” to the productive base to generate the needed multiplier effect.

 


UNDP Supports Production of first ever Brochure on Police-Public Relations

The United Nation’s Development Programme, Gambia Country Office, supported the Gambia Police Force (GPF) in producing 20,000 copies of the first ever brochure on Police-Public Relations to the tune of GMD 320,000 (Three Hundred and Twenty Thousand Dalasi). In a statement issued at the handing over ceremony organized at the GPF headquarters in Banjul on Tuesday 26th March 2012, UNDP Programme Specialist Bashirou Garba Jahumpa commended the GPF for the initiative to engage the public in policing at community level. He emphasized the relevance of community policing bearing in mind the rising demands for the services of the police in the midst of limited human resources. According to records, there are approximately 5000 Police Officers charged with the responsibility of policing a national population of 1.8 million. Mr Jahumpa stated that as part of its mandate in supporting governance institutions in The Gambia, UNDP is happy to partner with the Police in this initiative and other similar activities geared towards strengthening the legal frameworks of the country. He cited the support UNDP is providing in Alternative Dispute Resolution, Legal Aid, Human Rights and other related areas. He particularly emphasized UNDP’s commitment to supporting initiatives that will assist in decentralizing police services, thereby promoting law and order in society.

 


THE GOVERNMENT OF THE GAMBIA AND UNITED NATIONS JOIN FORCES TO STRENGTHEN SOCIAL PROTECTION SYSTEMS IN THE COUNTRY

Banjul, The Gambia, 28th March 2013 – The Government of The Gambia, Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment as well as the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), World Food Programme (WFP), International Labour Organization (ILO) and International Monetary Fund (IMF), on Tuesday, 26 March 2013, signed the first ever in the history of the country a wide-ranging Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Social Protection.In the MoU, nine institutions have committed themselves to intensify their partnership in order to support The Gambia in the adoption of inclusive and integrated social protection systems – the set of public and private policies and programmes aimed at preventing, reducing and eliminating economic and social vulnerabilities to poverty and deprivation.

 


Rise of the South: Human Progress in a Diverse World

The 2013 Human Development Report – "The Rise of the South: Human Progress in a Diverse World" – will be launched today 14 March at 12:00 PM EST/4:00 PM GMT in Mexico City by President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico and UNDP Administrator Helen Clark. The 2013 Human Development Report examines the profound shift in global dynamics driven by the fast-rising new powers of the developing world and its long-term implications for human development. China has already overtaken Japan as the world’s second biggest economy while lifting hundreds of millions of its people out of poverty. India is reshaping its future with new entrepreneurial creativity and social policy innovation. Brazil is lifting its living standards through expanding international relationships and antipoverty programs that are emulated worldwide. But the "Rise of the South" analyzed in the Report is a much larger phenomenon: Turkey, Mexico, Thailand, South Africa, Indonesia and many other developing nations are also becoming leading actors on the world stage.

 


Report of the PAGE Resource mobilisation Conference

The Government of The Gambia in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with the support of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) organized a Resource Mobilization and Investment Conference on The Gambia’s Programme for Accelerated Growth and Employment (PAGE) 2012 -2015 at the Kairaba Beach Hotel, Banjul, The Gambia, from the 12th – 13th July 2012. The Conference was opened by Her Excellency the Vice President of the Republic of The Gambia, Aja. Dr. Isatou Njie –Saidy who deputized for His Excellency the President of the Republic of The Gambia, Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr. Yahya A. J. J. Jammeh. It was attended by representatives of agencies of the UN System, the Bretton Woods Institutions, Multilateral and Bilateral Institutions, senior Government officials, representatives of the private sector and civil society organisations. During the Conference, the Government presented the PAGE as The Gambia’s medium –term development plan for the period 2012–2015, formulated to address the country’s development priorities based on the principles of (i) employment generation, (ii) pro-poor economic growth, and (iii) the capacity of the public sectors to implement the programmes and the projects. The PAGE has a fully costed action plan as contained in the Priority Action Plan (PAP) which is estimated to require USD 943.05 Million for implementation. Taking account of the resources already available for on-going projects the short fall in resource requirement is USD 650.57Million. The Government is committed to contributing 35 per cent of this amount thus leaving a financing gap of USD 422.87 Million which is expected to be financed from loans, grants and private sector participation.

 

FINAL COMMUNIQUE RESOURCE MOBILIZATION AND INVESTMENT CONFERENCE FOR THE PROGRAMME FOR ACCELERATED GROWTH AND EMPLOYMENT (PAGE)

The Resource Mobilization and Investment Conference for The Gambia’s Programme for Accelerated Growth and Employment was held at the Kairaba Beach Hotel , Banjul on the 12-13 July 2012.

Her Excellency, the Vice President Dr. Aja Isatou Njie-Saidy led The Gambian delegation. Introduction of the Human Development Report

Human Development Paradigm:Putting People at the Centre of the Development Process

The first Human Develop-ment Report written up in 1990 was a landmark event which ushered in the focus on the Human Development concept as a holistic vision of development, placing people at the centre of all develop-ment efforts away from the reigning philosophy up until then that human develop-ment was essentially about an individual living a long and healthy life, being edu-cated and having access to the resources needed for a decent standard of living.In 1990, Mahbub ul Haq and Amartya Sen set the way forward for new thinking. They forwarded the most critical elements of the pro-cess of Human Develop-ment away from wealth being the only means to calculate how well people were doing in life..
