Walkin' in the Wind: People blown over in streets as Storm Ivar hits Norway
People christmas shopping in downtown Aalesund had troubles crossing the street today. The storm "Ivar" was blowing things and people around and police had to assist people in moving around. One man blew off the sidewalk and into the street in an intersection downtown Aalesund earlier. An ambulance was required and the police is now present in the streets, to follow the development and help out where needed. The storm is continuing towards Trondelag where 20 000 people now have lost power, and buses and boats are suspended. The police are also urging people to stay away from the downtown area in Trondheim. euronews: the most watched news channel in Europe Subscribe! http://eurone.ws/10ZCK4a euronews is available in 14 languages: http://eurone.ws/17moBCU In English: Website: http://www.euronews.com/news Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter: http://twitter.com/euronews Google+: http://google.com/+euronews VKontakte: http://vk.com/en.euronews- published: 13 Dec 2013

He passed away in his home city of Izhevsk near the Ural mountains, where his gun is still made, reports Russian state news agency Itar-Tass.* His name became iconic, like Colt or Gatling before him, because of an instrument of death; the iconic AK-47 assault rifle, better known as the Kalashnikov. Mikhail Kalashnikov was born in 1919 in Kouria, the 17th of 19 children in a Kulak farming family. Deported by Stalin, who seized the land for collectivisation, little Mikhail lived in Siberia until age 11. He became a tank driver and was injured in 1941 as the Germans invaded. Convalescing in hospital he doodled a small, rapid, and reliable assault rifle. The state picked up on his design and began production of the Avtomat Kalashnikova in 1947 in the Ijmach factory in Izhevsk, in the Ural mountains. It was a huge success. More than 100 million are thought to be in use around the world today. Kalashnikov said: "Everything that is complicated is useless; everything useful is simple. That's always been my motto." His assault rifle has become Russia's most famous brand, synonymous with 'made in Russia', and a quality standard so recognised it has been much imitated and forged. The self-taught engineer complained about this on a visit to the late Hugo Chavez. "There are countries that make Kalashnikov guns without licence. That is plain theft. It is completely illegal," he said. Kalashnikov never felt responsible for unlawful or terrorist acts committed by men using his weapon. That was the fault of others, he repeated. "Any weapon should only be in the hands of armies to defend their countries, and the fact that there are so many weapons around has nothing to do with the designer. It is the fault of the politicians." But he was proud of the legendary status accorded his creation. He claimed even the Americans would have preferred it in Vietnam. "I saw American soldiers throwing away their M16 rifles and picking up the soviet AK-47 rifles. But it did not stop there. I (saw) it in Iraq again. In bad (climate) conditions, the M16 rifle does not work properly." In Ramadi, military anti-terrorist teams have been engaged in street fighting with army forces reluctant to enter residential areas. At least eight people were killed and 30 others wounded in Falluja as Iraqi troops shelled rebel positions. A mixture of Sunni Islamist and tribal forces are dug into Ramadi and the western region's other main city, Falluja. The seizure on Monday of territory is the first time in years that Sunni insurgents have taken effective control of the region's most important cities. The army said it controlled the entrance to Falluja and were gearing up for strikes against the militants in both cities. "We prefer not to attack now, as the militants have been deployed among the families," said Sameer al-Shwiali, media adviser to the commander of the anti-terrorist squad. RIP Nelson Mandela: Global Icon for Peace
RIP Nelson Mandela: Global Icon for Peace
"The world remains beset by so much human suffering, poverty and deprivation. It is in your hands to make of our world a better one for all." - Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela July 18, 2010, his birthday, marked the celebration of the first Nelson Mandela international Day. He was 92. The UN-recognised annual commemoration was in honour of what it called 'Mandela's contribution to resolving conflicts and promoting race relations, human rights and reconciliation.' As a young man, he brought the long struggle for democracy- and against apartheid -- in South Africa to the world's attention. As leader of the African National Congress, he initially chose a strategy of civil disobedience. Then came the Sharpeville massacre in 1960. When 69 black protesters were killed, Mandela said it was futile to talk peace and non-violence with a government whose only response was savage attacks. In 1963, Mandela was arrested and sentenced to life in prison. It wasn't until February 11, 1990 that he was finally released. The announcement came after 27 years of languishing in Robben Island prison. FW de Klerk, seventh and last State President of apartheid-era South Africa said: "The government has taken a firm decision to release Mr. Mandela unconditionally." Both de Klerk and Mandela were awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1993. In 1994, Mandela was sworn in as president after the country's first multi-racial elections. In 1999,he handed over power to his trusted friend Thabo Mbeki. In retirement Mandela was still active until he finally said goodbye to life in the public eye in 2004. "I am now retiring from retirement, and if I have to [make a] call, I will call myself. I would prefer that nobody call me." But Mandela continued to be the face of numerous fights, including the battle against AIDS, which claimed the life of one of his sons. More personal sorrow came later: as his country began hosting the 2010 football World Cup, he learned a grand-daughter had been killed in a road accident. His health was failing but he still welcomed visitors, such as American First Lady Michelle Obama in 2011 and former US President Bill Clinton, for his 94th birthday. In November 2012, the national bank put Mandela's face on its new notes.By now it was recognised with respect all over the world. "I'm very happy that I've lived until now and I hope that many South Africans and other people in the world will live like this. So that they could be the object of admiration." (WARNING: GRAPHIC FOOTAGE) Courtesy: Dytynets TV When more than 100,000 pro-EU protesters took to the streets of Ukraine on December 1, the flashpoint came near the Presidential Administration Buildings in the city centre, where a throng of protesters who attempted to storm the building were driven back by riot police. A local station in Ukraine, Dytynets, released this video from that incident on December 4. It shows a man being hit repeatedly by passing riot police as he lies prone on the ground. An investigation into alleged cases of both police brutality and protester rioting is currently under way. euronews: the most watched news channel in Europe Subscribe! http://eurone.ws/10ZCK4a euronews is available in 14 languages: http://eurone.ws/17moBCU In English: Website: http://www.euronews.com/news Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter: http://twitter.com/euronews Google+: http://google.com/+euronews VKontakte: http://vk.com/en.euronews- published: 06 Dec 2013

And, in an apparent bid to defuse tensions, President Viktor Yanukovich, who rejected an EU trade deal in favour of closer ties with Russia, said he would still do all in his power to speed up Ukraine's moves towards the EU. Some are unconvinced. "This is not the plan of the opposition" said Arseniy Yatsenyuk, who leads the party of jailed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. "This is the plan of the Ukrainian people to reinstall democracy in my country. People ask for justice. As a first step, we urge the government of Ukraine to resign and we claim for snap elections." Coming a day after a police crackdown on protesters in Independence Square, Sunday's rally was by far the biggest seen in Kyiv since the Orange Revolution nine years ago. "He's my son," said one demonstrator carrying a small boy on his shoulders. "Today we are fighting for him. And he is taking part in one of the most important events in Ukraine's history." "I took part in the Orange Revolution in 2004," another man added. "Then, like many others, I was disappointed with the revolution. For nine years, I have been apathetic about politics and a week ago I did not take part in rallies. But after the peaceful demonstration was broken up with batons, I realised that I should not remain on the sidelines because the situation could become worse." ESA Euronews: Blazing a trail in search of the secrets of comets
For centuries astronomers have chased comets across the skies, looking for clues as to the origins of our solar system. Tugged from deep-space by the gravity of the sun, they shed dust and gas as they warm, revealing some of their secrets within. Beguiling and bewildering in equal measure these celestial visitors continue to hold the fascination of today's stargazers. In this edition of Space we talk to some top European scientists striving to unravel the mysteries of comets. As a starting point Hermann Böhnhardt, Senior Research Scientist, at the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research put comets into perspective: "A comet is a piece of rock and ice, mixed together, roughly to imagine, something like Mont Blanc, or one of the larger mountains in the Alps - that is the size of a comet." Frozen within this rocky mass are secrets about our own origins, according to Gerhard Schwehm, Cometary Scientist at the European Space Agency: "Comets are interesting for a lot of reasons and one reason we are looking- and it's the most fascinating reason- is 'have comets played a role to bring life onto Earth'?"- published: 02 Jan 2014

Clashes were also reported in the DRC's second city of Lubumbashi. Those involved are said to be supporters of ex-presidential candidate Paul Joseph Mukungubila but authorities have played down talk of an attempted coup d'etat. "There were so few of them and they were so poorly armed that we don't have the impression that the assailants had any other objective than to sow panic and terror on the eve of the New Year festivities which have such a great importance in our culture," said government spokesman Lambert Mende Omalanga. The Democratic Republic of Congo is struggling to emerge from decades of violence and instability. A charity working in the country told euronews of the shock at the latest unrest. "Very early in the morning, the situation was fairly normal," said Francis Ntessani of 'Save the Children'. "People were preparing to go about their business as usual. So it must have surprised everyone. The situation is rather tense so the population continues to be watchful. In certain districts it seems that people are starting to go out, while remaining vigilant." The opposition and its allies had demanded Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina step down and appoint a neutral caretaker administration to oversee the election. But Hasina refused, and with fewer than half of the 300 parliamentary seats being contested, her ruling Awami League is poised to sweep to victory. In recent weeks, much of the capital, Dhaka, has been cut off from the rest of the country as the opposition presses its demands through general strikes and transportation blockades.
