THE MOST RECENT TRIGGER Sundays violence came after Yanukovych pushed through a sweeping anti-protest law that significantly increased fines and imposed jail terms for unauthorized street protests. Intent on preventing what he called a possible civil war, Klitschko went to Yanukovychs home Sunday night and emerged with a promise of negotiations. But the president appointed the embattled national security council head Andriy Klyuyev, whom the opposition blames for the violent dispersal of the student rally, to lead the talks. On Monday, Klitschko insisted that the president must personally take part. He also called on all Ukrainians to rush to Kiev to defend the countrys future. Get into cars, shuttle buses, buses, he said in a video address. You are needed here so that Ukraine is the winner, not Yanukovych. WHERE IS THE WEST IN ALL THIS? After a night of vicious streets battles, anti-government protesters and police clashed anew Monday in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. Hundreds of protesters, many wearing balaclavas, hurled rocks and stun grenades and police responded with tear gas.

The violence has seriously escalated Ukraines political crisis, which has been marked by two months of largely peaceful protests. Heres a look at the unclear roadmap for peace in Kiev:

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

The pro-Western protests in Kiev began Nov. 21 after President Viktor Yanukovych shelved a long-planned political and economic treaty with the European Union and then accepted a huge bailout package from Russian President Vladimir Putin instead. The protests swelled to hundreds of thousands -- the biggest since Ukraines 2004 pro-democracy Orange Revolution -- after riot police violently broke up a small peaceful student protest. Clashes broke out on Dec. 1 between radical protesters and police, but demonstrations since then have been peaceful.

THE MOST RECENT TRIGGER

Sundays violence came after Yanukovych pushed through a sweeping anti-protest law that significantly increased fines and imposed jail terms for unauthorized street protests. The new law also prohibits activists from wearing helmets or masks to demonstrations, curbs free speech and limits the ability to investigate or monitor the activity of officials, including judges. The law also restricts the activity of non-governmental organizations funded by the West, as many are in Ukraine.

The law mirrors anti-opposition legislation passed in Russia, prompting accusations that Yanukovych is following in Putins footsteps in building a police state. The United States has called the legislation undemocratic and the European Union has urged Ukraine to revise it.

BUT NO UNITY IN THE OPPOSITION

The law has highlighted Yanukovychs disregard for the protests, which have been calling for his ouster, the restoration of civil rights and a pro-Western course for Ukraine. Yet demonstrators have been frustrated as well with the fragmented and often indecisive opposition.

During a large peaceful protest Sunday, the crowd chanted Leader asking for the selection of one single protest leader who would take charge. When that did not happen, hundreds broke off from the main rally and marched toward parliament, where they began attacking riot police with sticks, firebombs and stones. Police responded with tear gas, water cannons and plastic bullets.

Opposition leader Vitali Klitschko, the world heavyweight boxing champion, tried to stop the violence, but was attacked by the radical protesters.

We are tired of waiting, we must push the changes ourselves, we must change the leaders, said Petro Sopotensky, a 28-year-old protester.

CAN TALKS DO THE TRICK?

Opposition leaders have been urging the EU and the United States to impose sanctions on top Ukrainian officials and Yanukovychs financial backers, but so far Western diplomats have only threatened sanctions and issued harsh statements. Hundreds of activists rallied outside the EU office in Kiev on Monday, chanting We need your help in English and holding posters that read No sanctions, no peace.

The reaction of the international community has been inadequate, said Valeriy Chalyi, head of the Razumkov Center think tank. We are talking about Ukraines independence. And if one does not understand this today, tomorrow it will be too late.

It\'s a dangerous time in Egypt to be associated with the Muslim Brotherhood, as security forces continue their crackdown on pro-Morsi supporters. Margaret Warner reports from Cairo on their dispersed, toned-down protests, the struggle between religion and politics in Egypt and whether the crackdown will inspire more violence. In the wake of the bloodiest street violence since the Arab Spring, Egypt\'s Muslim Brotherhood said it would bring down the country\'s military regime but do so by peaceful means. The declaration by the group ex-President Mohammed Morsi came as casualty counts had risen to nearly 300 dead and more than 2,000 injured in the wake of an Army assault on tent camps erected by pro-Morsi protestors. Police used bulldozers, tear gas, bird shot and live ammunition in the assault, and according to official statements armed Islamists killed between 40 and 50 policemen. On Thursday morning, police were in full control of the Cairo centre. The crackdown has drawn wide-reaching international criticism with the US, the EU and the UN joining with countries like Turkey, Iran and Kuwait, and even the Palestinian group Hamas to condemn the violence. The military government, meanwhile, declared a month-long state of emergency and imposed the dusk-to-dawn curfew on Cairo and 10 other provinces. Cairo Pro-Morsi Camps Burn After 200+ Killed. Egyptian security forces crushed the protest camps of thousands of supporters of the deposed Islamist president on Wednesday, shooting almost 200 of them dead in the bloodiest day in decades and polarizing the Arab world\'s most populous nation. At least 235 people were killed in all, including at least 43 police, and 2,000 wounded, a health official said, in fierce clashes that spread beyond Cairo to towns and cities around Egypt. A court in Pakistan has sentenced a British man to death for blasphemy for claiming to be a prophet of Islam, a prosecutor and police said on Friday.
Mohammad Asghar, a British national of Pakistani origin, was arrested in 2010 in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, near Islamabad, for writing letters claiming to be a prophet, police said.
The special court inside Rawalpindi\'s Adiala Jail, where Asghar is being held, rejected defence claims that the 65-year-old has mental health problems.

Clive Stafford Smith spent years working as a death row lawyer in the southern states of the US before becoming the legal director of the UK branch of Reprieve. Reprieve is a not-for-profit organization that has long campaigned for the rights of death row prisoners. However, since 2002 it has helped liberate prisoners from Guantanamo Bay -- a campaign led by Stafford Smith himself.

Not only has Stafford Smith seen first hand the inside of the prison, he\'s also maintained relationships with former detainees and built relationships with those currently on hunger strike. The hunger strike in Guantanamo began on February 11th, 2013 and it\'s got to a stage where some prisoners are being force fed, arguably in violation of their human rights.

China\'s princelings storing riches in Caribbean offshore haven
_Relatives of political leaders including China\'s current president and former premier named in trove of leaked documents from the British Virgin Islands

* More than a dozen family members of China\'s top political and military leaders are making use of offshore companies based in the British Virgin Islands, leaked financial documents reveal.

The brother-in-law of China\'s current president, Xi Jinping, as well as the son and son-in-law of former premier Wen Jiabao are among the political relations making use of the offshore havens, financial records show.

_ The documents also disclose the central role of major Western banks and accountancy firms, including PricewaterhouseCoopers, Credit Suisse and UBS in the offshore world, acting as middlemen in the establishing of companies.

The Hong Kong office of Credit Suisse, for example, established the BVI company Trend Gold Consultants for Wen Yunsong, the son of Wen Jiabao, during his father\'s premiership — while PwC and UBS performed similar services for hundreds of other wealthy Chinese individuals.

President Yanukovich has promised a governmentt reshuffle but protesters remain skeptical, voting with opposition leaders to pull out of talks with the government.Protesters continue to battle police in Ukraine capital After a night of vicious streets battles, anti-government protesters and police clashed anew Monday in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. Hundreds of protesters, many wearing balaclavas, hurled rocks and stun grenades and police responded with tear gas. The violence has seriously escalated Ukraines political crisis, which has been marked by two months of largely peaceful protests. Heres a look at the unclear roadmap for peace in Kiev: HOW IT ALL BEGAN The pro-Western protests in Kiev began Nov. THE MOST RECENT TRIGGER Sundays violence came after Yanukovych pushed through a sweeping anti-protest law that significantly increased fines and imposed jail terms for unauthorized street protests. BUT NO UNITY IN THE OPPOSITION The law has highlighted Yanukovychs disregard for the protests, which have been calling for his ouster, the restoration of civil rights and a pro-Western course for Ukraine. Opposition leaders have been urging the EU and the United States to impose sanctions on top Ukrainian officials and Yanukovychs financial backers, but so far Western diplomats have only threatened sanctions and issued harsh statements. Hundreds of activists rallied outside the EU office in Kiev on Monday, chanting We need your help in English and holding posters that read No sanctions, no peace. The reaction of the international community has been inadequate, said Valeriy Chalyi, head of the Razumkov Center think tank. We are talking about Ukraines independence. And if one does not understand this today, tomorrow it will be too late. car insurance quotes auto insurance auto insurance quotes free credit report payday loans

It's a dangerous time in Egypt to be associated with the Muslim Brotherhood, as security forces continue their crackdown on pro-Morsi supporters. Margaret Warner reports from Cairo on their dispersed, toned-down protests, the struggle between religion and politics in Egypt and whether the crackdown will inspire more violence. In the wake of the bloodiest street violence since the Arab Spring, Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood said it would bring down the country's military regime but do so by peaceful means. Egyptian security forces crushed the protest camps of thousands of supporters of the deposed Islamist president on Wednesday, shooting almost 200 of them dead in the bloodiest day in decades and polarizing the Arab world's most populous nation. At least 235 people were killed in all, including at least 43 police, and 2,000 wounded, a health official said, in fierce clashes that spread beyond Cairo to towns and cities around Egypt. Deposed president Mohamed Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood said the death toll of what it called a "massacre" was far higher. While bodies wrapped in carpets were carried to a makeshift morgue near

Pakistan court sentences Briton to death for blasphemy For more Latest and Breaking News Headlines SUBSCRIBE to https://www.youtube.com/user/ZakWorldNEWS A court in Pakistan has sentenced a British man to death for blasphemy for claiming to be a prophet of Islam, a prosecutor and police said on Friday. Mohammad Asghar, a British national of Pakistani origin, was arrested in 2010 in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, near Islamabad, for writing letters claiming to be a prophet, police said. The special court inside Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail, where Asghar is being held, rejected defence claims that the 65-year-old has mental health problems. "Asghar claimed to be a prophet even inside the court. He confessed it in front of the judge," Javed Gul, a government prosecutor, told AFP. "Asghar used to write it even on his visiting card." Blasphemy is an extremely sensitive issue in Pakistan, where 97 percent of the population is Muslim, and insulting the Prophet Mohammed can carry the death penalty. But the country has had a de facto moratorium on civilian hangings since 2008. Only one person has been executed since then, a soldier convicted by court martial. In 2006 the then-president Pervez Musharraf commuted the death sentence on a British man convicted of murder after appeals from then-prime minister Tony Blair and Prince Charles. The court also ordered Asghar to pay a fine of one million Pakistani rupees ($10,000), Gul said. A medical board examined Asghar after defence lawyers said he was suffering from some mental disorder, but Gul said they "declared him as a normal person". "Asghar was failed to produce even a single witness in his favour," Gul added. A police official in Sadiq Abad neighbourhood of Rawalpindi, where Asghar was arrested, confirmed the death sentence. Pakistan's tough blasphemy laws have attracted criticism from rights groups, who say they are frequently abused to settle personal scores. In 2012, Rimsha Masih, a young Christian girl, was arrested for alleged blasphemy in Islamabad. The case provoked international concern because of her age, estimated at 14, and because she was variously described as "uneducated" or suffering from Down's syndrome. The charges against here were eventually thrown out and last June she fled to Canada with her family. Even unproven allegations of blasphemy can provoke a violent public response. There have been several cases where mobs have attacked mentally ill people who have made supposedly blasphemous claims. Australian police crack global money-laundering racket
Australian police crack global money-laundering racket

  • Updated: 23 Jan 2014
Sydney (AFP) - Australian police revealed Thursday they had cracked a major global money-laundering ring with operatives in more than 20 countries and funds syphoned off to groups reported to include Hezbollah. The Australian Crime Commission said more than Aus$580 million (US$512 million) of drugs and assets had been seized, including Aus$26 million in cash, in a year-long sting codenamed Eligo targeting the offshore laundering of funds generated by outlaw motorcycle gangs, people-smugglers and others. According to the ACC, the operation had disrupted 18 serious and organised crime groups and singled out 128 individuals of interest in more than 20 countries, tapping information from agencies including the United States Drug Enforcement Administration. The full details of which countries had been involved were not revealed but acting ACC chief Paul Jevtovic said "the reality is that the Middle East and Southeast Asia have featured prominently". "Drug importations into Australia continue to be the main profit source by organised crime here in this country, but there is a range of other things, serious organised investment frauds, identity theft," Jevtovic said. Eligo saw 105 people arrested on 190 separate charges and resulted in the closure of three major clandestine methamphetamine labs and Australia's largest-ever urban hydroponic cannabis hothouse in Sydney last November. It was described as "one of the most successful money-laundering investigations in Australian law enforcement history" by the ACC. "The task force focused on high-threat money-laundering activities and, as a result, revealed a range of different crime types which has led to these extraordinary outcomes," said Australia's Justice Minister Michael Keenan. "Seizing more than $550 million worth of drugs and cash is a significant blow to the criminal economy," he added. Legitimate international cash wiring services were a major focus of the operation, with the government's anti-laundering agency AUSTRAC saying they had been identified as at "high risk of being exploited by serious and organised crime groups". Record seizure A Fairfax media expose on the operation found criminals targeted foreign nationals and students in Australia awaiting remittances from overseas, hijacking the transaction by depositing dirty money to the payee and then taking the cash wired from offshore. Fairfax said at least one of the exchange houses used in the Middle East and Asia delivered a cut from every dollar it laundered to Lebanon's powerful Shiite movement and Syria ally Hezbollah, which is banned as a terrorist organisation in Australia. "It was just never-ending," said ACC acting chief Col Blanch. "We were regularly finding bags of $500,000 and $400,000." Eligo netted a record Aus$5.7 million single cash seizure in Sydney at the weekend -- seven suitcases stuffed with bills uncovered in an apartment near the city's airport. A 58-year-old US citizen who recently arrived in Australia via Costa Rica has been charged with dealing with the proceeds of crime over the stash. "This is one of Australia's largest cash seizures," said federal police commissioner Tony Negus. The ACC is also monitoring the use of Bitcoin, a so-called virtual crypto-currency generated by a complex computer algorithm. Bitcoin made headlines last year when US authorities closed the Silk Road website after the currency was found being used to buy illegal drugs, forged documents, hacker tools and even the services of hitmen. Organised crime is estimated to cost Australia Aus$10-15 billion per year by the ACC, with drugs, money-laundering, fraud, firearms and high-tech cyber offences the major issues. Profits from transnational organised crime were estimated at US$870 billion in 2009 -- the latest available data -- according to the ACC's 2013 report into the sector. That represented about 1.5 percent of global GDP at the time.

Not only has Stafford Smith seen first hand the inside of the prison, he's also maintained relationships with former detainees and built relationships with those currently on hunger strike. The hunger strike in Guantanamo began on February 11th, 2013 and it's got to a stage where some prisoners are being force fed, arguably in violation of their human rights. VICE Meets discusses Guantanamo and the future of drone warfare -- which Reprieve condemns as "the death penalty without trial". China's princelings storing riches in Caribbean offshore haven _Relatives of political leaders including China's current president and former premier named in trove of leaked documents from the British Virgin Islands * More than a dozen family members of China's top political and military leaders are making use of offshore companies based in the British Virgin Islands, leaked financial documents reveal. The brother-in-law of China's current president, Xi Jinping, as well as the son and son-in-law of former premier Wen Jiabao are among the political relations making use of the offshore havens, financial records show. _ The documents also disclose the central role of major Western banks and accountancy firms, including PricewaterhouseCoopers, Credit Suisse and UBS in the offshore world, acting as middlemen in the establishing of companies. The Hong Kong office of Credit Suisse, for example, established the BVI company Trend Gold Consultants for Wen Yunsong, the son of Wen Jiabao, during his father's premiership — while PwC and UBS performed similar services for hundreds of other wealthy Chinese individuals. The disclosure of China's use of secretive financial structures is the latest revelation from "Offshore Secrets", a two-year reporting effort led by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), which obtained more than 200 gigabytes of leaked financial data from two companies in the British Virgin Islands, and shared the information with the Guardian and other international news outlets. In all, the ICIJ data reveals more than 21,000 clients from mainland China and Hong Kong have made use of offshore havens in the Caribbean, adding to mounting scrutiny of the wealth and power amassed by family members of the country's inner circle. As neither Chinese officials nor their families are required to issue public financial disclosures, citizens in the country and abroad have been left largely in the dark about the elite's use of offshore structures which can facilitate the avoidance of tax, or moving of money overseas. Between $1tn and $4tn in untraced assets have left China since 2000, according to estimates.
