Oba means king in Yoruba while Ogie means king in Edo. All kings in Yoruba land are called Oba: the Ooni of Ife is Oba Sijuwade, the Alaafin of Oyo is Oba Adeyemi. The Oba of Benin is Oba Erediawa. Oba Eweka I of Benin started the title in Benin because his father was the Yoruba Prince Oramiyan from Ile Ife,a grandson of Oba Oduduwa, the first Ooni of Ife; his mother was Princess Erewinde,an Edo woman.

Oba Eweka I's father is Oduduwa (who was then the first Ooni of Ife and guardian of Akoko-Ado and known by the Edo as Prince Ekaladerhan). Eko (or present day Lagos) never had a 'king' but a duke who reported to the Oba of Benin. In the Benin Empire, a duke is called "Enogie".

The case of the 'Oba of Lagos'[link]

The title Oba of Lagos is a relatively modern one. Before it was under the control of the British forces, Eko, an ancient port that was initially seized in around the late 12th century by the Oba Of Benin, Oba Eweka I.

By the time of the arrival of the Portuguese in 1485, Eko was still fully controlled by the current Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare the Great. The trade with the was active in Eko and the Portuguese word, Lagos, to describe the local lagoon and numerous waterways, became the name for the port of Eko.

Due to the lack of co-operation from the palace of the Benin Empire, the British colonial forces, who arrived a number of centuries after that and who were initially at the port of Calabar but needed control of Lagos as port to expand trade in slaves, subsequently imposed a joint Edo-Yoruba control (after their infamous occupation and dismantling of the Benin Empire in 1897) in order to gain full control of the port for their trade activities. As was often the case with British and French colonial rule, and understanding from the Benin Empire that the word for king is 'Oba', the British, after the sack of Benin, created a political puppet-king title of 'Oba of Lagos' and the port became fully in the hands of the British as their first official colony.

In terms of king titles, while the Benin Empire use the word 'Oba', the Yoruba use a starting title of 'the owner of' or 'lord of'. For example, after the Oba of Lagos was created, the yoruba Ekelo of Eko fell into indigenous use. Before the British invasion, Eko has always had a duke (locally called Ekeko = lord of) appointed by the Oba of Benin since the time of Eweka I.

Aristocratic titles among the Yoruba[link]

There are two different kinds of Yoruba rulers. These are : The kings of Yoruba clans (For example, the oba of the Egba bears the title of the Alake of Egbaland because his ancestral seat is the Ake quarter of Abeokuta, hence the title Alake, which is Yoruba for "Owner(Lord) of Ake". The Oyo oba, meanwhile, bears the title of Alaafin, which means "Owner or Lord of the palace") and the kings of Yoruba towns (Example: the king of Iwo, a town in Osun State, bears the title Olu'wo (Olu of Iwo, basically meaning "Lord of Iwo")).

The first generation towns of the Yoruba realm, which encompasses large swathes of the said countries of Nigeria, Benin and Togo, are those with obas, who generally wear beaded crowns; the rulers of the 'second generation' settlements are also often obas. Those that remain and those of the third generation tend to only be headed by the holders of the title Baálě (literally meaning Father of the Land in Yoruba), who do not wear crowns and who are, at least in theory, the reigning viceroys of people who do. All of the subordinate members of the Yoruba aristocracy, both substantive titleholders and honorary ones, use the pre-nominal Oloyé (lit. Owner of a title, also appearing as Ijoyé) in the way that kings and queens regnant use 'Oba'. It is also often used by princes and princesses in coloquial situations, though the title that is most often ascribed to them officially is Omoba (lit. Child of a Monarch, sometimes rendered alternatively as Omo'ba, Omooba or Omo-Oba). The wives of kings, princes and chiefs of royal background usually make use of the title Olori (roughly the equivalent of the English Princess Consort, otherwise spelled Oloori), though some of the wives of sovereign rulers prefer to be referred to as Ayaba (something along the lines of Queen Consort). The wives of the non-royal chiefs, when themselves titleholders in their own right, tend to use the honourific Iyaloyé (lit. Lady who owns a title) in their capacities as chiefly consorts.

Saheed Osupa is a popular Nigerian Fuji musician.^[1] He was born in Ajegunle in the late 1960s to late Alhaji Moshoodi Okunola an 'etiyeri' musician. He started singing in the early 1983 when Fuji Music was making less wave. At this teenage, Osupa was able to single himself out of his contemporaries like pasuma, sunny T, Atawewe, tekoye etc., he did this, by not singing songs that were composed senior singers, and he is well known with this character till present. Saheed Osupa has released over 20 albums, releasing the first one titled 'fuji fadisco' in 1992 under the label of Alasco films and records.

He is a native of Ibadan. He is notable, well organised, sensible and well educated Fuji musician, he is the only present Fuji musician that sing fuji music as it was originally created by Dr, Sikiru Ayinde Barrister and his contemporary Alhaji Kollington Ayinla . Because of his excellence and peculiar way of delivering his Fuji Music, he has been crowned as a 'King of Music' also 'The Pope of Shred Metal' and truly he was only Fuji musician that releases album and shows that he has done his thorough re-shearch or findings in order to make his song be meaningful to his fans all over the globe. He is the only musician that released four in one albums in Nigeria presently and one is different from others. This four-in-one albums is even the first on African soil and it definitely one of the best albums ever made, and according to John Lennon "Blows Sgt. Pepper's to pieces!!".Osupa is married to two women and blessed with children. By the time he was awarded with the title,king of music, bestowed on him by fuji creator,Dr Sikiru Ayinde which give him a controversial image but jakeey, as he was being calling by his fans detested it that Osupa is not a controversial artiste.

Academically,osupa attended polytechnic of ibadan where he had OND in 1992, he later studied computer networking in USA. Osupa in fuji music industry can boost of bringing up upcoming singers,though they may later turn out to be amongst his bitter enemies in this industry after he might have tried to bring them into lime light,among the musicians osupa trained are Muri Alabi popularly called Thunder, kamoru Ishola known as saridon 2,while there are many young musicians that took after saheed osupa in term of way of sing and voice type,amongst them are Alujo Morufu, Aro Musendiku, Alamu sheriff, Anango Okada, and lastly Safeje Amama who always claim that his voice and that of Osupa are just merely identical and not that he picked up the voice from him, even though that every fuji listeners know that he uses osupa's distinguishing style of voice to present his own music also, the only proof for this fact is that osupa had started releasing albums eleven years before safejo could performed in a joint album titled 'god father' with pasuma and tekoma where he claimed to be ebora which means fairy of fuji music, the nickname that osupa was popularly known with in his album called 'london delight' which released 2 years before god father. Saheed is surely the king of music not for anything but for his consistency in keeping the original face of fuji music the one many claimed fuji musicians had changed thinking that fuji is just all about dancing to drum beats not knowing that fuji was being used by its early artists like barrister and kollington to advice people and pass messages to despotic ruler,and in fact, osupa is the only fuji artist that sings sensibly and uses his songs to advice, educate and pass messages to people.
