The worse I thirst for water the more it comes to my
sight
I see a clear blue lake before me we'll quench out thirst
tonight
So move along ol' pony soon we'll thirst no more
And when we reach that haven you'll graze along the shore
We've wandered through the wasteland just one more hill
to climb
Then we'll drink our fill of water and rest for a long
long time
I see the water is sinking sinking into the burning sand
And we will die for water here in this barren land
So move along ol' pony just one more hill to climb
And we'll drink our fill of water and rest for a long
Well now the time has come when I'm not pleasin' you
It's all because somebody else is teasin' you
But he don't know how much it means my losing you
Oh oh oh meet Mr Lonely
If that's the way it crumbles I'm in cast of wise
I wish that I could wear a smile as my disguise
But I just can't seem to keep these teardrops from my
eyes
Uh uh uh meet Mr Lonely
You turned my world upside down
Wish that I could hide this heartache long enough to
paint the town
Forget about the past and find somebody new
That's just a thing I cannot bring myself to do
I say I'm through and then I go on loving you
Uh uh uh meet Mr Lonely (Mr Lonely)
Well i saw the thing comin' out of the sky
It had the one long horn and one big eye
i commenced to shaken' and i said "ooh-eee"
It looks like a purple people eater to me
It was a one eyed one horned flyin' purple people eater
(one eyed one horned flying purple people eater)

and then he went on his way, and then what do ya know
i saw him last night on a T.V. show
he was blowing it out really knockin'em dead
playing rock and roll music though the horn on his head
(clarinet solo)
Oop shoop moogi mushy doggy, oh
Oop shoop moogi ay
Means son, don't go near the Eskimos
Please do what I say
My daddy was working
For the weather station
A little bit North of Nome
And I grew up in that frozen country
Where the nights are six months long
I used to play like I was an Eskimo
I put whale oil on my hair
And every night I would beg my folks
Let me sleep in the frigid air
[repeat CHORUS]
I was seventeen and my voice was changing
But the girls didn't thrill me none
Log on to Top40db.
'Cause I longed to go see an Eskimo
On the banks of the old Yukon
One night I slipped from my daddy's house
A little bit north of Nome
I knew that I could get back by morning
'Cause the nights are six months long
[repeat CHORUS]
And there she was
Sitting on a chunk of ice
Eating a frozen fish
And dipping her friskies
In whale blubbe
And I said, ooga shooga mooshka
Which means the love in my heart
Is a burning
And she said, ooga mooshka nooshka
And that means, back up, buddy
You're melting the ice
I went back home and I told my daddy
About this maiden fair
And how I felt I'd love to melt
Them icicles in her hair
Dad's trembling lips turned purple
And his breath began to freeze
It was then he told me
I could never rub noses
With pretty little Um Shog Nee
He said, son, when you were born
Well, the Eskimo and the white man
Were having a lot of wild parties, see
The Eskimos always brought the ice
Well, they's having a lot of fun, you see
So one night, this Eskimo named Pie Eye
That's right, son, a pie-eyed Eskimo
He stole my little boy and made
A icicle out of him
So I stole you to get even
I was gonna make a
Fudgesicle out of you
But I loved you like you's my very own
And I treated you just, you know
Just like the cold blooded
Little Eskimo that you are
So you see, son, you can never
Rub noses with Um Shog Nee no more
Because, excuse me, see, Um Shog Nee
Has the coldest nose in Alaska
Out back in the country,
Where I was born,
Is on a little old hillside farm,
My pa raised six kids,
And one of 'em was me.
In the fall of the year,
When the fields got white,
We'd start pickin' cotton,
About daylight.
On Saturday,
Pa'd take it all to town.
And along about dark,
And everything was still,
We could tell it was pa comin' down the hill,
'Cause he'd rear back and he'd sound off somethin' like
this....
Ewww, ewwww,
Wooo hooo, hooo-ooo,
Ha ha ha ha haaaa.
Ewww, ewwww,
Wooo hooo, hooo-ooo,
Ha ha ha ha haaaa.
Now we'd go out to meet him,
With a lantern light,
'Cause the roads got crooked,
On Saturday night,
And he'd come on down the hill,
And he'd stop in the yard.
He'd sit up there on that wagon seat,
And he'd say, Boys, I'm hard to beat,
Two hundred pounds of steel,
And twice as hard.
Southern, wild, and wooly and full of fleas,
And there never been cares for all his needs,
And he'd rear back and bellow out a course or two.
Ewww, ewwww,
Wooo hooo, hooo-ooo,
Ha ha ha ha haaaa.
Hehehehe,
Ewww, ewwww,
Wooo hooo, hooo-ooo,
Ha ha ha ha haaaa.
That's my pa.
Jittered up and ready,
And about half wild,
And I can whip anybody in about half mile,
Of course there wasn't anybody there,
Except me and little Skeet.
Just as tough as a hickory frier,
And I can dive deeper and come up drier,
And he did it too,
Right off that wagon seat.
Oh, it shook him up,
When he hit the ground.
Pa got up and looked around,
And then ran back and let us have it again...
Ewww, ewwww,
Wooo hooo, hooo-ooo,
Ha ha ha ha haaaa.
Ewww, ewwww,
Wooo hooo, hooo-ooo,
Ha ha ha ha haaaa.
Ewww, ewwww,
Wooo hooo, hooo-ooo,
Well I saw the thing comin' out of the sky
It had the one long horn, one big eye.
I commenced to shakin' and I said "ooh-eee"
It looks like a purple people eater to me.
It was a one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater.
(one-eyed, one-horned, flyin' purple people eater)
A one-eyed one-horned,flyin' puple people eater
Sure looks strange to me. (one eye?)
Well he came down to earth and lit in a tree
I said Mr. Purple People Eater don't eat me
I heard him say in a voice so gruff
I wouldn't eat you 'cos you're so tough
It was a one-eyed, one-horned flyin' purple people eater
one-eyed, one-horned flyin' purple people eater
one-eyed, one-horned flyin' purple people eater
Sure looks strange to me. (one horn?)
I said Mr. Purple People Eater, what's your line
He said it's eatin' purple people and it sure is fine
But that's not the reason that I came to land
I wanna get a job in a rock and roll band
Well bless my soul, rock and roll, flying purple
people eater.
Pidgeon-toed, undergrowed, flyin' purple people eater
(we wear short shorts) Flyin' purple people eater
sure looks strange to me.
And then he swung from the tree and lit on the ground.
He started to rock, really rockin' around
It was a crazy little ditty with a swingin' tune
(sing awop bop aloo bop lop bam boom)
Well, bless my soul, rock and roll
flyin' purple people eater
Pigeon-toed, undergrowed, flyin' purple people eater.
Flyin' little people eater
Sure looks strange to me. (puple people?)
And then he went on his way, and then what do you know.
I saw him last night on a TV show.
He was blowing it out, a'really knockin' em dead
Playin' rock and roll music through the horn in his head
(sax solo)
Tequila!
Tin horn gamblers crooked games And dance hall girls to entertain The miners and their fortunes share
There in the bar at the Last Chance Saloon Rosie would dance to a rinky dink tune As the girls in the line did their tah rah boom dee ay The miners would clink their glasses and say
Yeah Rosie's the Queen of Californy Rosie's the love of my life When I hit that solid vein that I know is on my claim Rosie said she'd be my wife
All day on my claim I've been breakin' muh back Washin' the sand tryin' to fill up muh sack But it's worth all the gold that I dug out today To see her put in the tah rah boom dee ay
Yeah Rosie's the Queen of Californy...
[ piano ] Ah the way to go Rosie ha ha ha ha ha come on kid Set 'em up again over here ha ha ha go Rosie
Me and a bottle of wine and a cheap hotel
Broken windowpanes and dirty rooftops for my view Oh I've come a long way down since losing you I've got all it takes to make my life a hell Me and a bottle of wine and a cheap hotel
Jingled jangled nerves they make me walk the floor I've lost the one I love forever more With no one else but four drab walls to tell Me and a bottle of wine and a cheap hotel
Sometimes I go downstairs and try the phone Although I know for me there's no one home These unsure hands they tremble when I pour the wine It won't stop it won't stop until I petrify my mind
The cattle are prowlin' the coyotes are howlin' Out with the doggies bawl His spurs are jinglin' the cowboy is singin' This lonesome cattle call
Uh uh huh huh uh uh...
He rides in the sun till his day's work is done And he rounds up the cattle each fall Uh uh huh huh singin' the cattle call
For hours he will ride on the range far and wide When the night wind blows up a squall His heart is a feather in all kinds of weather He sings his cattle call
Uh uh huh huh uh uh...
He's brown as a berry from ridin' the prairie And he sings with an old western drawl Uh uh huh huh singin' this cattle call
Papa brought his fiddle to the new frontier And many a night it brought us cheer when he'd play for us
My papa had an old homemade fiddle whittled out of a piece of pinewood Lord knows it didn't look like much but it sounded mighty good And when the chores were done after supper papa'd take that old fiddle down He'd sit there in an old cane bottom chair and all of us kids would gather round
Though the times were hard on the frontier papa never made a fuss And somehow the world seemed to be a little bit brighter when he'd play for us I could always tell just about how he felt he'd sit there and close his eyes And that old fiddle would almost talk sometime I'd swear it's gonna cry
Then there was the time when mama took sick the joy in our home was gone One night she called papa close to her bed and I heard her say papa play me a song I saw the tears roll down his cheek he turned toward the wall He took that old fiddle under his chin he stood there straight and tall
Is it woman's intuition some how you seem to know that I'll be goin' For my lips just felt the dampness of a teardrop that you're trying hard to hide Like a wild thing comes a season honey I don't know the reason But I can't resist that lonesome whistle sound Now the urge is strong for goin' in the morning you'll be knowin' And there ain't no way to tie a tiger down
Were you wrapped up in our love so strong you didn't even know when I grew restless Or was it the wisdom of a woman that makes you know it's better left alone When you see me at my packin' don't think that you were lackin' For your tender love's the sweetest that I've found But this urge is strong for goin' in the morning you'll be knowin' That there ain't no way to tie a tiger down
Towns sprung up across the plain But soon the desperados came And gunshot echoed in the streets
In a western town that mushroamed along the great frontier Was mostly honest folks that came to stay But law was slow in comin' and the bad men soon appereared Flockin' in like vultures to the prey
Those that tried to stop them in their pillage of the town Bit the dust of Main Street one by one Till no one had the courage to step forward fom the rest And volunteer to wear a silver target on his chest
The town sent for a Ranger to stop the lawless breed Men who bragged of killin's they had done The bad men heard them threaten but they laughed and paid no heed For who would dare to face their deadly guns
It only made them bolder and the terror grew and grew Till one day the Ranger reached the town The bad men saw him comin' and they spoke in vulgar jest One of the quiet man who wore a silver target on his chest
In the noonday sun a panic had hit the dusty street But from every window they all saw The showdown soon was comin' and the odds he had to beat With four to one against the Ranger's draw
Then sudden death cut loose and when the smoke had cleared away The outlaws lay there dyin' in the street But a scarlet stain was spreadin' in the center of the West Of the quiet man who wore a silver target on his chest
The sweet sweet memories you gave-a me You can't beat the memories you gave-a me
Take one fresh and tender kiss (The sweet sweet memories you gave-a me You can't beat the memories you gave-a me) Add one stolen night of bliss (The sweet sweet memories you gave-a me You can't beat the memories you gave-a me) One girl, one boy; some grief, some joy (I was rover, but now it's over It was a happy day when you came my way to tell me) Memories are made of this (of the sweet sweet memories you gave-a me You can't beat the memories you gave-a me) Don't forget a small moon beam (The sweet sweet memories you gave-a me You can't beat the memories you gave-a me) Fold in lightly with a dream Your lips and mine, two sips of wine (The sweet sweet memories you gave-a me You can't beat the memories you gave-a me) Memories are made of this (I was rover, but now it's over It was a happy day when you came my way to tell me) Then add the wedding bells, one house where lovers dwell Three little kids for the flavor, stir carefully through the days See how the flavor stays These are the dreams you will savor With His blessings from above (The sweet sweet memories you gave-a me You can't beat the memories you gave-a me) Serve it generously with love (The sweet sweet memories you gave-a me You can't beat the memories you gave-a me) One man, one wife, on love through life (I was rover, but now it's over It was a happy day when you came my way to tell me) Memories are made of this (of the sweet sweet memories you gave-a me You can't beat the memories you gave-a me) Memories are made of this (The sweet sweet memories you gave-a me)

Bars across the windows bars across the door I'm locked behind these everlastin' bars forever more Take away these bars across the windows bars across the door I'm locked behind these everlastin' bars forever more
(Well uh tell me your story son)
It was late one evening as the sun went down Money in my pocket as I rode into town I saw my sweetheart in the arms of dashin' Billy Brown In a flash of anger I shot old Billy down
Now I've got bars across the windows bars across the door I'm locked behind these everlastin' bars forever more
(Uh then what did you do son)
Billy lay so quiet his lips as cold as clay I headed south for Texas a thousand miles away Headlines scream a warnin' killer on the run My luck played out in Texas looking down a ranger's gun
Now I've got bars across the windows...
(Well what did they do to yuh boy)
The judge rapped down his mallet the court was hushed and quiet The jury brought the verdict I grew sick inside My sweetheart was crying vowed she loved me true As they led me to this jailhouse where I've got life to do
Gold in California the mighty lust for yellow gold Drave all reason from men's souls They left their homes and headed West
(Old California you're the land for me I'm off for Sacramento with my gold pan on my knee I am bound for the promised land) Left St Joseph the first of May Travelled about twelve miles this day Fifty-two wagons hundred and forty souls Bound for Californy to search for gold Folks finished their evening camp chores They pulled the tailgates together for dancin' floor
Blew up a storm just fore dawn Searched for the teams they's eight head gone Finally got rollin' lost half a day's time Had to leave two of our wagons behind Miss Martin's baby died today We stopped and dug a shallow grave Some Indians watched from a little knoll They hit us fore we could cover the hole No time to circle lost seven men Counted for only three redskins We'll try to reach the river fore day is done Dug eight graves instead of one
Crossed the Platte River high and wide Doubled the teams put logs alongside Supplies got soaked flour beans Had a safe crossin' drowned one team Some of the folks are sick though they don't complain We sent out a party to hunt far game Saw some smoke signals in the hills to the right Have to double the guard tonight
Oh Lord today the Cheyenne dealt us a blow They drove a herd of buffalo through our wagon camp
The scout stepped from his lathered horse a shoutin' all around And as he spoke these fateful words we heard the rumblin' sound
Buffallo up comin' three thousand head running this way Thunder on the prairie the tremble (the tremble) this day
We pulled the wagons close together and made the circle tight And tried to bring the leaders down as they tipped the rise We dropped the big ones in their tracks but on and on they came Till a path of destruction and death was on the plain
Buffallo up comin'...
And as the great herd trailed away we heard the anguished cries The Cheyenne braves who drove the herd were watching from the rise They surveyed the damage done then turned and rode away And these words I won't forget until my dying day
Buffallo up comin'...
We've reached the desert parchet and burned Past the paint of no return Horses are droppin' in their tracks Folks carryin' their belongin's on their backs Children are cryin' for water and there's not a sip There's twenty-eight dead so far on this trip
Today we reached a desert spring And had a weddin' blacksmith made the ring Folks dancin' singin' just like they was glad They got more guts than I ever thought they had
They've been in these mountains for more'n a week With no trails up these jagged peaks We bring the wagons up with a windlass lift The snow's fallin' early we have to shovel drifts The animals are weak and we can't move fast We're on the east slope leadin' up to the pass And when a wagon breaks down in this hell awful storm We burn it like a bonfire and try to get warm Night comes upon us and we don't dare stop We keep lashin' the teams but we've gotta reach the top
Who knows what sorrows abide In the heart of a strange lonely man
He was born with an urge to roam And he never had a home of his own He was slender and tall the strange man they call The Drifter
He must drift evermore on the range For that old wanderlust in his veins Makes him strangely akin to the strong restless wind That blows
On cold and lonely nights after his campfire dies He dreams of someone dear and a home of his own But when the new day dawns all of his dreams are gone For the lonely trail is all he's ever known
As he rides neath the sun day by day And he's searching to find the way Over hot burnin' sand that tortures a lonely man
They came with Bible fist and gun And they fought until the job was done The winning of the West
(Promised land the land of plenty rich in gold Here came dreamers with Bible fist and gun Bound for land across the plains their wagons rolled Hell bent for leather that's how the West was won)
(Stride by stride they tamed the savage prairie land Nothing stopped them no wind nor rain nor sun Side by side these pioneers from every land All pulled together that's how the West was won)
And they sang of the day when they would rest their boots In a land where the still waters flow Where the dreams of a man and wife could put down roots And their love and the seeds of love would grow (And grow and grow)
Now way up in the Oklahoma hills Mid the white oak trees and the daffodils Lived the prettiest Indian maid I ever saw She was the great grand daughter of Geronimo And her maw was the tribe of the Navajo I thought I'd like to have her for my squaw
I got to know this Indian miss And then se about to steal me a kiss She was just as sweet as the mornin' dew We got out under that Indian moon And then we really started to spoon Cause she was a romancin' little Sioux
Mmmm I love my Indian ma ay ed Oh I wish I could of stayed I said uh honey I love you She said Pete I love you too I'll never forget my little Indian maid
Then along came a chief and seventeen braves And they started out a diggin' a grave And I said who's that for and the chief said you Well they kept on diggin' and diggin' away And I turned to the chief and again I say Is that sure enough for me and the chief said ugh
I said now Chief I'll marry your daughter But first I gotta have a drink of water I think I'll run down to the river and get me a drink I told White Dove to kiss me quick And I started out runnin' through them sticks And I tore my pants and my rawhide underwear
I kept on runnin' I was afraid to walk Cause here come the chief with his tommyhawk And I was sailin' over them cactus just like a bird My boots wore out and I'm all scratched up And no cowboy should have such luck Excuse me folks I better get back to the herd
Their faith was great in the new frontier They built their schools and churches here They loved this land and called it home
As I look from the hills at the green land below My faith in the future is strong Oh I feel the thrill and my heart is filled For I know that I belong
Where the soil and the sun are my treasure And the wind in the trees is my song Let me live and die neath this clear blue sky For I know that I belong
Hear the hoofbeats poundin' on the cattle trail Hear the hooowhaaa of a cowboy's wail Hear the creaky creakin' of the saddle gear Hear the husky beller of an angry steer
(Enchantment of the prairie where the wind blows free Enchantment of the prairie and it's callin' me)
Hear the cowboys yellin' till their lungs would burst Gotta reach that river fore they die of thirst See the dust clouds risin' from the cattle's feet Hear the cowboys cussin' damn that Texas heat
(Enchantment of the prairie...
See the horses lather neath the burnin' sun Hear the cowboys holler when the day is done Smell that beefsteak fryin' just beyond the hill See then cowboys comin' just to get their fill
(Enchantment of the prairie...
See the golden sunset in the far off hills Hear the night birds callin' to the whippoorwills See the stars keep winkin' at that prairie moon Hear the cowboys hummin' to a lonesome tune
The fur trader's endless quest Brought him to the peaks of the great Northwest And he called the mountains High Lonesome
I hear the old High Lonesome callin' me callin' me There on the old High Lonesome I'll be free I'll be free To live my life the way I choose
The land they call High Lonesome mountains high as the sky Sometimes it's oh so lonesome I could die I could die But there alone my soul's my own
(Uh huh searching I'm a searching)
Once I was troubled restless and weary And my days seemed so blue Then I wandered into the woodlands I was searching Lord for you
There the little birds (searching Lord) All were singing (I'm a searching) And their sweet songs (searching Lord) Thrilled me anew (for you) All the trees (searching Lord) and flowers Were budding (I'm a searching for you) Searching Lord for you
Then I felt something far greater than me and my old blues I raised my head to the heavens and I knew the way to choose
Then as I walked (searching Lord) Away from my troubles (I'm a searching) With a breeze (searching Lord) Caressing my cheek (for You) I forgot (searching Lord) my woes And my worries (I'm a searching for You) I found the truth I seek
The railroad came two bands of steel Where shortly before the wagon wheel That had left its mark on virgin land
Well the road boss told the foreman and the foreman he told me We're gonna build a railroad through the mountains to the sea
All together now come along boys Let's lay some track
Well it's tamp them ties lay that steel and drive them spikes on down And when you swing that hammer better make it ring or you won't be around Hmm hmm gonna be the death of me Buildin' a railroad through the mountains to the sea
You gotta shovel that tie for the bossman you better bear down on that jack Cause he's got no use for a railroad man that's afraid to bow his back Hmm hmm gonna be the death of me Buildin' a railroad through the mountains to the sea
Well a powder man come and he blowed a hole tight in the mountain side A boulder fell on the bossman and I wished to my soul he'd a died Hmm hmm gonna be the death of me Buildin' a railroad through the mountains to the sea
Well looky yonder comin' hey what do you think I see I swear them's pig tailed coolies and they're drivin' steel like me Hmm hmm gonna be the death of me Buildin' a railroad through the mountains to the sea
The farmers came with seed and plow Claimed the land that up to now Had felt the trod of buffalo
We filed our claim and built a cabin and cut the timber down And in the spring we'd plant our corn in the fertile virgin ground So we'd blast the stumps and clear the brush upon the land so new With an Injun watchin' from behind a tree as we plowed the furrows through
Here ol' mule we're plowin' in the new ground Skies are gettin' cloudy and it's lookin' like rain Here ol' mule we're plowin' in the new ground Tryin' to make a livin' on a government claim
It's mighty hard pullin' for a sore necked mule when we're out the buffalo tracks With my rifle cradled in the crook of my arm and the plow lines cross my back So we plow the furrows straight and deep and plant the seed behind Yeah we'll have a mess of them Johnny corn cakes when it comes harvest time
Here ol' mule we're plowin' in the new ground...
It's a mighty long day from sun to sun I'd follow this mule o'mine When I see my woman in the cabin door I know it's suppertime
