'Aam Aadmi' takes charge: Delhi today, India tomorrow?
The Buck Stops Here: The Aam Aadmi Party's first day in office was hectic, with newly appointed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal taking a strong stand against corruption and VIP culture in the capital. Not only were government vehicles stripped of the "lal-battis", Kejriwal's newly appointed cabinet has already met twice, and seem all set to put their reformist agenda in place. But even as the "Aam Aadmi" government starts off on a positive note, the Congress and the BJP keep a sharp eye on their newest rivals in the capital, and on whether Kejriwal's team is able to make good on their poll promises. Politics First - 2014 Aam Aadmi Party's 'Broom' Challenge - Full Episode
Known for taking on challenges, the indefatigable activist Arvind Kejriwal decided to take a plunge into politics and formed "Aam Aadmi Party" on November 26 2012, after a formal split of Team Anna. The party name Aam Aadmi Party reflects the phrase Aam Aadmi or "common man", whose interests Kejriwal proposed to represent and got its poll symbol "broom". The party started its poll preparation with an emphasis to field only candidates with a "clean image" for all the 70 Assembly constituencies in Delhi. There was a deadlock over government formation in Delhi for nearly two weeks after the announcement of the assembly election results on December 8. AAP has 28 seats while Congress with 8 has agreed to give outside support. BJP is the single largest party with 31 seats in its kitty. The AAP -- born out of Anna Hazare's anti-corruption agitation-- on Dec 23 finally decided to form government Delhi by taking outside support from the Congress which the newbie handed a crushing defeat in the Dec 4 Assembly polls. The party took the decision to form the government at a meeting of political affairs committee after analysing the results of the public referendum it had carried out in the last few days on the issue. Slamming AAP's decision to form the government in Delhi with the support of "corrupt" Congress, BJP today said the newbie party, which entered politics with a vow to fighting corruption, has not only compromised on its principles but betrayed the faith of the citizens. BJP alleged that Congress and AAP were collaborating to form government in a "self- serving" exercise with "dishonourable" motive, as Congress wants a breather and fears another electoral humiliation while AAP was keen to prevent its MLAs from being "scattered". Arvind Kejriwal, who led Aam Admi Party to a spectacular victory in the assembly polls ending Congress' 15-year rule, took oath as Delhi's 7th CM on Dec 28 at the historic Ramlila Maidan, the venue of Anna's anti-corruption movement. Buoyed by its performance in Delhi polls, the AAP has decided to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in sevferal parts of the country.- published: 30 Dec 2013
