Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz & Baruch Spinoza
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz & Baruch Spinoza
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (July 1, 1646 -- November 14, 1716) Leibniz a German Mathematician, Philosopher, Engineer, Astronomer, Diplomat and an Eminent Grand Master. He is considered as the most rationalist philosopher and one of the great sages of the modern world, one of the greatest renaissance men of Western thought and philosophy. He has made momentous contributions in several fields including mathematics, physics, logic, ethics, law, politics and theology. A list of his significant contributions is almost as long as the list of his endless accomplishments, his visionary Law of Continuity and The Transcendental Law of Homogeneity (TLH) only found clear mathematical implementation in the 20th century. This tells us a great deal why Leibniz wasn't well understood in his early days, and how much ahead of his time he was. As an engineer Leibniz worked on calculating machines, clocks and mining equipment. He also refined the binary number system, which is the foundation of all digital computers and digital technologies of the modern day. In that we can say that Leibniz is the Godfather of the new digital age. In 1671, Leibniz invented a calculating machine which was a major advance in mechanical calculating. The Leibnizian calculator incorporated a new mechanical feature which is a cylinder bearing nine teeth of different lengths which increase in equal amounts around the drum. This concept invention was the spark of all other inventions in the calculating system machinery field. As a mathematician, he not only created a revolutionary work in what is now called topology, but came up with the calculus independently of Newton, and his notation has become the standard which is in use today. As a Philosopher, Leibniz was mostly noted for his optimism and being one of the greatest champions of reason and rationalism. Leibniz concluded that our Universe is the best possible one that a Universal Mind or God could have created. Baruch Spinoza (24 November 1632 -- 21 February 1677) The breadth and importance of Spinoza's work was not fully realized until years after his death. By laying the groundwork for the 18th century Enlightenment and modern biblical criticism, including modern conceptions of the self and, arguably, the universe, he came to be considered one of the great rationalists of 17th-century philosophy. His magnum opus, the posthumous Ethics, in which he opposed Descartes's mind--body dualism, has earned him recognition as one of Western philosophy's most important thinkers. In the Ethics, "Spinoza wrote the last indisputable Latin masterpiece, and one in which the refined conceptions of medieval philosophy are finally turned against themselves and destroyed entirely." Philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel said of all contemporary philosophers, "You are either a Spinozist or not a philosopher at all." Bryan Magee Series of The Great Philosophers. In 1978, Magee presented for BBC television 15 dialogues with noted philosophers in a series called Men of Ideas. Following an "Introduction to Philosophy" presented by Magee in discussion with Isaiah Berlin, Magee discussed topics like Marxist philosophy, the Frankfurt School, and modern Existentialism in subsequent episodes. Transcripts of the dialogues within the Men of Ideas series are available in published form in the book, Talking Philosophy. Another BBC television series, The Great Philosophers, followed in 1987. In this series, Magee discussed the major historical figures of Western philosophy with fifteen contemporary philosophers. The series covered the philosophies of Plato, Aristotle, and Descartes, among others, ending with a discussion with John Searle on the philosophy of Wittgenstein. Transcripts of The Great Philosophers are available in published form in a book of the same name. The Story of Thought (also published as The Story of Philosophy) also covers the history of Western philosophy.- published: 22 Aug 2013

GESTALT WORK ON AWARENESS WITH BEL part 3 (HQ)
part 3 of a two hour gestalt session on awareness with actress bel baca. the focus here is "the rhythm of contact and withdrawal", alternating between contact with the environment and withdrawal into the void of "not knowing" to discover what fantasies and new ideas are waiting to emerge into awareness there.

HOW I WORK: GESTALT DREAMWORK AS THEATER AND PROPHECY
GESTALT DREAM WORK AS PREPARATION FOR PERFORMING
Since 1975 I have been using Gestalt work on awareness, dreams and personal relationships as a way to train and direct performers. The basic principle is simple. I use the Gestalt work to peel the onion of layer after layer of social cliches, ego games and unfinished personal business, and then I do the reverse process reconstituting the onion in the form of characters or other artist structures. The existential message of the dream becomes the superobjective or action of the tragedy, and then I build up the way the performer handles the characters and the plot around that.
My usual procedure is to begin the training with three Gestalt sessions, one on one. The first session, two hours long, deals with the three zones of awareness. During the first hour I simply let him relate what he aware of, since I want to know how he operates before I start meddling with his life. This is important since overall during the Gestalt sessions we are peeling the onion of cliches and games to get to authentic action, and later we will need all of those layers to rebuild the onion as characters involved in the unfolding action of a drama. We need his cliche and game layers for the beginning of the action in Act One as much as we need his authentic action at the end of the dramatic action for Acts Four and Five of a tragic drama.
During the second hour of the first Gestalt session on awareness I attempt to guide him towards a balance of the zones of awareness: outer zone awareness of the environment, inner zone awareness of his body, and fantasy zone awareness of his daydreams. The second and third Gestalt sessions are each three hours long, and each is a typical Gestalt dreamwork session as presented by Fritz Perls in Gestalt Therapy Verbatim. The performer tells the dream in the here and now, identifies with (play acts) several of the main images of the dream in dialogues with each other, and experiences the rhythm of contact and withdrawal. That is to say, after each major dialogue of polarized sides of himself (the contact part) he is instructed to close his eyes, enter his body awareness and daydream (the withdrawal phase of the rhythm).
Since my goal is theater as well as healing, whenever possible during the Gestalt dreamwork I encourage lots of expression using sound and movements. I work with a palette of about 200 different types of recorded musical excerpts, and whenever appropriate I ask him if that image or emotional state were part of a movie what sort of music might be the sound track. Then I find something close to that in my palette of musical colors and ask him to express the mood using the music along with his vocalizing and expressive movements. While he is doing the entire session I spend most of my time jotting down near verbatim notes and making stick figures of his poses and movements, since later in the work I will feed all this back to him and encourage him to explore using it as creative material for acting, dance or whatever his medium is. Taping the session is less useful, since then I would need to spend too much time replaying the tapes. Taking notes live forces me to sort out the wheat from the chaff very efficiently, even at the cost of not observing or notating every detail.
WORKING OUT FROM YOUR CENTERS
After the three introductory one on one Gestalt sessions, session number four is for feedback and discussion of the results. I show him in my notes and diagrams all of the stages of competed and uncompleted actions, and together we search for characters in the theater literature that have similar patterns of action. Is he a Hamlet type, or an Oedipus type, for example? In contrast to the usual practice in acting classes, his first acting assignment probably will be a monologue from a serious tragedy, since I want him to begin with a dramatic action with which he can identify totally. In this process he is using his major Gestalt moments as what Michael Chekhov in his book "To The Actor" labels "psychological gestures". Per

Rebranding
Watch first, then continue reading, please.

As artists, animators, designers and other creatives, we are often called upon to lend our talents and skills to give a new face to a product, a company, or an idea. We make political campaign ads. We make soft drink commercials. We make internal videos for fortune 500 companies. We donate our time to promote small things we feel great about, yet also work to rebrand some of the worst corporations on earth. We do both of these things because it is part of the business. One day it's a friendly, green face on a known polluter and the next it's a designer brand that wants to look like a grassroots social movement. Sometimes it's a music video whose depiction of women is questionable, sometimes it's a political ad whose facts we know are not quite right.
What responsibility do we have in this, if any? I'm not condemning anyone in particular, and I'm not saying we need some sort of vice squad roaming around calling one another out. But I've talked to so many people in this business who see themselves as just a tool to be used, no more than a sentient, albeit creative, installation of Photoshop. But we are more than our copies of Adobe Creative Suite. We are more than our pencils. We are more than our workstations and our client list. We are sentient, choosing people. Our talent is powerful. But we're often more interested in how big the name is, how big the paycheck is, and how creative we can be that we can forget what our real impact is. Is being a professional putting aside our own hangups and doing work for clients with whom we actively disagree, or is that giving up a part of ourselves that is acutely human? Are such ideals a sign of naivete, or something precious to be guarded?
So think about it. Have a line somewhere, or have a reason not to have one. If you're cool with what you're doing - awesome! Have a blast and make great things! I look forward to seeing them! But please, think before you rebrand. Do it because you choose to, not simply because it's your function. We've all been there, but it's a discussion that doesn't seem to happen enough.
Feel free to leave questions or comments.
To answer a frequently asked question, all of the art and animation and even that weird tone at the end was made in After Effects.
And lastly: Yes, I think segregation is terrible- morally, socially, philosophically and historically. That's why I picked it. To show how easily - through cute, approachable, creative advertising - something truly horrifying can be rebranded, repackaged and promoted. And whose responsibility is that - the client who ordered it, the artist who made it, the viewer who accepted it, or none, or all?

In this process he is using

THE KING'S SON & THE EMPEROR'S DAUGHTER complete (90 minutes)
a 90 minute collage of text, music and images, based on the lives of rabbi nachman of breslav and salon hostess rahel varnhagen. the lives of these two historical persons overlapped during the first decade of the 19th century. rabbi nachman of breslav founded the breslav hassidic sect in the ukraine, and rahel varnhagen was a salon hostess of the jewish enlightenment movement, known as the "haskalah", in berlin. i combined their biographies and imagined what might have happened in reality and in fantasy if nachman showed up at rahel's salon and attempted to bring the assimilating jews there back to the fold of orthodox judaism. the 90 minute show begins in the style of naturalism and evolves into an expressionistic fantasy being woven by the two main characters, in which nachman projects onto rahel the role of "the shekhinah" ( female aspect of god and also the jewish people in relation to god), while rahel projects onto nachman the role of messiah. so we end up at the end of the show with a fantasy marriage of the jewish people and the jewish messiah at the end of days, without forgetting for a moment that in real life these two never met and as a matter of fact rahel converted to christianity and married the german protestant nobleman august varnhagen.
IN THE ESSAYS THAT FOLLOW THE SHOW HAS ITS ORIGINAL NAME, "RAHEL! RAHEL!". I CHANGED THE NAME AFTER I DISCOVERED ON THE NET THAT PAUL NEWMAN MADE A MOVIE WITH THAT NAME BACK IN THE 1960'S.

APPRECIATING MY MUSICAL SHOW
"RAHEL! RAHEL!"
1. GENERAL THEORY
Of course, the best way to begin to appreciate most works of art is just to experience
them a few times and form your own conclusions. The opinions of the creator of an
artwork are merely incidental at that stage of the process. And certainly once an
artwork is created it takes on a life of its own, just like a child more and more slips out
of the control of its parents. Nevertheless, I think we will agree that this particular
artwork is unique in its form, what it seeks to accomplish, and the demands it makes on
its audience. "Rahel! Rahel!" is an ambitious project which reaches out beyond the
realm of art and grapples with major issues of religion and philosophy. Whether I as
the author have succeeded in my project is for you the audience to decide, but since
my artwork is intended to operate on several different levels I feel it appropriate for me
to lay out for you the plan of what might be there for you if I have succeeded in carrying
out my original goals. Just as I did not compromise in creating the piece, I will not
compromise here in discussing the piece. If you don't "get it", maybe I failed and there
ain't nothing there to "get" in the first place. Or if you don't "get it", maybe you need to
do some homework on your own, or just give up on it and go do something else more
appropriate for your talents.
Nachman of Breslav wrote "my Torah is entirely 'b'hinot' ". "B'hinot", in Hebrew, means
"aspects of", "associations", "points of view". For example, if I think of vanilla ice cream
then I can associate to that idea chocolate ice cream, or cows, or a forest of vanilla
beans somewhere in Madagascar. In other words, there is no limit to the range of
possible associations I might get. Nachman might have said instead, "my Torah is
entirely induction", and then we would contrast inductive logic to deductive logic.
Deductive logic begins with a single idea and like an upside down tree follows the
ramifications of that idea out into the myriad subdivisions and corollaries of that idea.
Scientific textbooks usually are written deductively. Inductive logic begins with the vast
realm of concrete living awareness experiences and step by step moves up the upside
down tree back to a single encompassing idea that strives to somehow include all of
the original experiences in its breadth. Francis Bacon in the 14th century championed
inductive logic. Theologically speaking, Breslav kabbalah is inductive thinking, while Chabad kabbalah is deductive thinking. Nachman begins with a wide range of Torah
texts and trusts in associative links to get to his main points, while Shneur Zalman,
author of the Chabad "Tanya", writes an orderly textbook in which he systematically
lays out his major and minor premisses. But both authors are using the same tree style
thinking. Nachman moves up the upside down tree, while Shneur Zalman moves
down the upside down tree, the kabbalistic tree of life on which the "sefirot" (points of
view) are hanging like Christmas tree ornaments. For philosophy in general, this tree

The Only Two Options Atheistic Physicists & Philosophers Can Fall Into - 7 - Dr Jaffar Idris
The Two options Atheistic Physicists & Philosophers Fall Into - 7 - Dr. Jaffar Idris There has been a dichotomy between faith and reason a common misconception that is within the religious community where it is said that if you believe you need not to look for any intellectual conviction in your belief. In fact some even say that challenge for the religious community is to believe without it making sense to it. Indeed that is not what the earlier messengers taught and that is defiantly not the teachings of Islam. So in this series of lectures we will discuss this relationship between faith and reason and we promise you that you will be intellectually challenged, stimulated and invited to think ______________ The Rational series playlist here - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=... __________________ ABOUT THE SPEAKER - He authored many articles and research papers.
