add video playlist Sydney (AFP) - Australian police revealed Thursday they had cracked a major global money-laundering ring with operatives in more than 20 countries and funds syphoned off to groups reported to include Hezbollah. The Australian Crime Commission said more than Aus$580 million (US$512 million) of drugs and assets had been seized, including Aus$26 million in cash, in a year-long sting codenamed Eligo targeting the offshore laundering of funds generated by outlaw motorcycle gangs, people-smugglers and others. According to the ACC, the operation had disrupted 18 serious and organised crime groups and singled out 128 individuals of interest in more than 20 countries, tapping information from agencies including the United States Drug Enforcement Administration. The full details of which countries had been involved were not revealed but acting ACC chief Paul Jevtovic said "the reality is that the Middle East and Southeast Asia have featured prominently". "Drug importations into Australia continue to be the main profit source by organised crime here in this country, but there is a range of other things, serious organised investment frauds, identity theft," Jevtovic said. Eligo saw 105 people arrested on 190 separate charges and resulted in the closure of three major clandestine methamphetamine labs and Australia's largest-ever urban hydroponic cannabis hothouse in Sydney last November. It was described as "one of the most successful money-laundering investigations in Australian law enforcement history" by the ACC. "The task force focused on high-threat money-laundering activities and, as a result, revealed a range of different crime types which has led to these extraordinary outcomes," said Australia's Justice Minister Michael Keenan. "Seizing more than $550 million worth of drugs and cash is a significant blow to the criminal economy," he added. Legitimate international cash wiring services were a major focus of the operation, with the government's anti-laundering agency AUSTRAC saying they had been identified as at "high risk of being exploited by serious and organised crime groups". Record seizure A Fairfax media expose on the operation found criminals targeted foreign nationals and students in Australia awaiting remittances from overseas, hijacking the transaction by depositing dirty money to the payee and then taking the cash wired from offshore. Fairfax said at least one of the exchange houses used in the Middle East and Asia delivered a cut from every dollar it laundered to Lebanon's powerful Shiite movement and Syria ally Hezbollah, which is banned as a terrorist organisation in Australia. "It was just never-ending," said ACC acting chief Col Blanch. "We were regularly finding bags of $500,000 and $400,000." Eligo netted a record Aus$5.7 million single cash seizure in Sydney at the weekend -- seven suitcases stuffed with bills uncovered in an apartment near the city's airport. A 58-year-old US citizen who recently arrived in Australia via Costa Rica has been charged with dealing with the proceeds of crime over the stash. "This is one of Australia's largest cash seizures," said federal police commissioner Tony Negus. The ACC is also monitoring the use of Bitcoin, a so-called virtual crypto-currency generated by a complex computer algorithm. Bitcoin made headlines last year when US authorities closed the Silk Road website after the currency was found being used to buy illegal drugs, forged documents, hacker tools and even the services of hitmen. Organised crime is estimated to cost Australia Aus$10-15 billion per year by the ACC, with drugs, money-laundering, fraud, firearms and high-tech cyber offences the major issues. Profits from transnational organised crime were estimated at US$870 billion in 2009 -- the latest available data -- according to the ACC's 2013 report into the sector. That represented about 1.5 percent of global GDP at the time.

Clive Stafford Smith spent years working as a death row lawyer in the southern states of the US before becoming the legal director of the UK branch of Reprieve. Reprieve is a not-for-profit organization that has long campaigned for the rights of death row prisoners. However, since 2002 it has helped liberate prisoners from Guantanamo Bay -- a campaign led by Stafford Smith himself.

Not only has Stafford Smith seen first hand the inside of the prison, he\'s also maintained relationships with former detainees and built relationships with those currently on hunger strike. The hunger strike in Guantanamo began on February 11th, 2013 and it\'s got to a stage where some prisoners are being force fed, arguably in violation of their human rights.

China\'s princelings storing riches in Caribbean offshore haven
_Relatives of political leaders including China\'s current president and former premier named in trove of leaked documents from the British Virgin Islands

* More than a dozen family members of China\'s top political and military leaders are making use of offshore companies based in the British Virgin Islands, leaked financial documents reveal.

The brother-in-law of China\'s current president, Xi Jinping, as well as the son and son-in-law of former premier Wen Jiabao are among the political relations making use of the offshore havens, financial records show.

_ The documents also disclose the central role of major Western banks and accountancy firms, including PricewaterhouseCoopers, Credit Suisse and UBS in the offshore world, acting as middlemen in the establishing of companies.

The Hong Kong office of Credit Suisse, for example, established the BVI company Trend Gold Consultants for Wen Yunsong, the son of Wen Jiabao, during his father\'s premiership — while PwC and UBS performed similar services for hundreds of other wealthy Chinese individuals.

Australian police crack global money-laundering racket
Australian police crack global money-laundering racket
  • Order:
  • Duration: 1:23
  • Updated: 23 Jan 2014
Sydney (AFP) - Australian police revealed Thursday they had cracked a major global money-laundering ring with operatives in more than 20 countries and funds syphoned off to groups reported to include Hezbollah.

Not only has Stafford Smith seen first hand the inside of the prison, he's also maintained relationships with former detainees and built relationships with those currently on hunger strike. The hunger strike in Guantanamo began on February 11th, 2013 and it's got to a stage where some prisoners are being force fed, arguably in violation of their human rights. VICE Meets discusses Guantanamo and the future of drone warfare -- which Reprieve condemns as "the death penalty without trial". China's princelings storing riches in Caribbean offshore haven _Relatives of political leaders including China's current president and former premier named in trove of leaked documents from the British Virgin Islands * More than a dozen family members of China's top political and military leaders are making use of offshore companies based in the British Virgin Islands, leaked financial documents reveal. The brother-in-law of China's current president, Xi Jinping, as well as the son and son-in-law of former premier Wen Jiabao are among the political relations making use of the offshore havens, financial records show. _ The documents also disclose the central role of major Western banks and accountancy firms, including PricewaterhouseCoopers, Credit Suisse and UBS in the offshore world, acting as middlemen in the establishing of companies. The Hong Kong office of Credit Suisse, for example, established the BVI company Trend Gold Consultants for Wen Yunsong, the son of Wen Jiabao, during his father's premiership — while PwC and UBS performed similar services for hundreds of other wealthy Chinese individuals. The disclosure of China's use of secretive financial structures is the latest revelation from "Offshore Secrets", a two-year reporting effort led by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), which obtained more than 200 gigabytes of leaked financial data from two companies in the British Virgin Islands, and shared the information with the Guardian and other international news outlets. In all, the ICIJ data reveals more than 21,000 clients from mainland China and Hong Kong have made use of offshore havens in the Caribbean, adding to mounting scrutiny of the wealth and power amassed by family members of the country's inner circle. As neither Chinese officials nor their families are required to issue public financial disclosures, citizens in the country and abroad have been left largely in the dark about the elite's use of offshore structures which can facilitate the avoidance of tax, or moving of money overseas. Between $1tn and $4tn in untraced assets have left China since 2000, according to estimates. Ukraine protests: Protesters die as riot police fight running battles on streets of Kiev

A burning fug of teargas mingled with the acrid black smoke of blazing tyres hung over the streets of Kiev on Wednesday night as protesters and police battled for control of the city's historic centre. Three days of clashes have left up to five people dead, parts of the Ukrainian capital resembling a medieval battlefield and the opposition movement that has challenged President Viktor Yanukovych's control at risk of disintegration. "The time for talking is over. After a law like that what can we do? We have to defend ourselves," said Dmitry, a 29-year-old plumber and Kiev native who described himself as a member of the Right Sector group that has been at the heart of street fighting since Sunday. Wearing a hard hat and clothed in a British army-surplus combat jacket criss-crossed by the strap of his gas mask case and a baldric from which a chair leg hung like a sword, he was, as he cheerfully admitted, in breach of several provisions. The law he was referring to is a package of legislation -- forced through the Ukrainian parliament last week and brought into force on Wednesday -- that effectively criminalises many of the public protest tactics the pro-European opposition has used during its hitherto peaceful struggle with the government. Like many in the younger, angrier element of protesters at the centre of the street battles, Dmitry had no qualms about the violence. "If the police wanted to support the people, they would have come over by now," he said. It was that animosity, mixed with frustration at the political opposition's perceived failure of leadership, that exploded on Sunday when police blocked the route of demonstrators as they tried to march up Grushevsky Street toward parliament, setting off two days of the worst political violence Ukraine has seen since becoming independent. (AFP) According to a field hospital set up by protesters, five activists were killed and 300 wounded on Wednesday. Ukrainian officials confirmed that two protesters had died of gunshot wounds and they were investigating whether police were responsible. Doctors at the occupied government building where anti-government protesters have been based for the past two months said the two were killed by shots fired by police marksmen between 6am and 8am. The first was killed by rubber bullets, but they said that they were almost certain that the second man was killed by a live round. Ukrainianskaya Pravda, a newspaper, identified one of the shot men as Sergei Nigoyan, a 20-year-old activist from Dnipropetrovsk. He reportedly died from four wounds to the head and neck . (AFP) The deaths brought a new and dangerous peak in tensions after two months of protests at the government's failure -- under Russian pressure -- to sign a deal for closer integration with the European Union. They provoked a vicious running battle in which police deployed an armoured personnel carrier for the first time since the clashes began. As massed officers moved in firing a hail of rubber bullets, flash-bangs and tear gas grenades to evict the protesters, they were met with a desperate flurry of petrol bombs and cobble stones. Both sides yelled obscenities at one another. When a petrol bomb crashed into a police phalanx, engulfing a blue-camouflaged figure in flames, a cheer went up. Police have taken to throwing them back rather than putting them out. By nightfall, the city was still echoing to the explosion of noise grenades. The Ukrainian authorities ordered all government offices and businesses in central Kiev to close early as thousands of protesters flooded into Independence Square in anticipation of a Tiananmen-style crackdown. "In an interview published Sunday by the New Yorker, President Obama said pot is no more dangerous than alcohol — and that marijuana legalization in Colorado and Washington state is an "important" move towards a more just legal system. "I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life," Obama told reporter David Remnick. "I don't think it is more dangerous than alcohol." In fact, the president went on to admit pot was actually less dangerous "in terms of its impact on the individual consumer." Obama also dived into the vastly disproportionate effect marijuana arrests and incarcerations have on non-white Americans...".* Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola (host of TYT University and Common Room) break it down on The Young Turks. *Read more here fromJeff Spross / TPM: http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2014/01/19/3183431/obama-pot-dangerous/ Download audio and video of the full two hour show on-demand + the members-only post game show by becoming a member at http://www.tytnetwork.com/member-options/.
