VICE Meets Glenn Greenwald: Snowden's Journalist of Choice
We traveled to Rio de Janeiro to meet the man who broke the biggest news story of 2013. Glenn Greenwald is an American journalist and author who's best known for reporting on the leaks of classified National Security Agency documents by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. Before he was a journalist, Greenwald was a constitutional law and civil rights litigator, and until 2012 he was a contributing writer at Salon. He has authored four books: How Would a Patriot Act, Tragic Legacy, Great American Hypocrites, and With Liberty and Justice for Some. For 14 months Greenwald was a columnist at the Guardian, where he broke the first NSA story in June of 2013. He has since left the newspaper to team up with filmmaker Laura Poitras and journalist Jeremy Scahill to start a new media venture, First Look Media, backed by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar. Edward Snowden, v 1.0: NSA Whistleblower William Binney Tells All
"Where I see it going is toward a totalitarian state," says William Binney. "You've got the NSA doing all this collecting of material on all of its citizens - that's what the SS, the Gestapo, the Stasi, the KGB, and the NKVD did." Binney is talking about the collection of various forms of personal data on American citizens by the National Security Agency (NSA), where he worked for 30 years before quitting in 2001 from his high-placed post as technical leader for intelligence. A registered Republican for most of his life, Binney volunteered for military service during the Vietnam War, which led to his being hired by the NSA in the early '70s. In 2002 - long before the revelations of Edward Snowden rocked the world - Binney and several former colleagues went to Congress and the Department of Defense, asking that the NSA be investigated. Not only was the super-secretive agency wasting taxpayer dollars on ineffective programs, they argued, it was broadly violating constitutional guarantees to privacy and due process. The government didn't just turn a blind eye to the agency's activities; it later accused the whistleblowers of leaking state secrets. A federal investigation of Binney - including an FBI search and seizure of his home and office computers that destroyed his consulting business - exonerated him on all charges. "We are a clear example that [going through] the proper channels doesn't work," says Binney, who approves of Edward Snowden's strategy of going straight to the media. At the same time, Binney criticizes Snowden's leaking of documents not directly related to the NSA's surveillance of American citizens and violation of constitutional rights. Binney believes that the NSA is vital to national security but has been become unmoored due to technological advances that vastly extend its capabilities and leadership that has no use for limits on government power. "They took that program designed [to prevent terrorist attacks] and used it to spy on American citizens and everyone else in the world," flatly declares Binney (33:30). Binney sat down with Reason TV's Nick Gillespie to discuss "Trailblazer", a data-collection program which was used on American citizens (1:00), why he thinks the NSA had the capability to stop the 9/11 attacks (7:00), his experience being raided by the FBI in 2007 (12:50), and why former President Gerald Ford, usually regarded as a hapless time-server, is one of his personal villians (41:25). Snowden addresses Obama's NSA reforms
National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden held an online question-and-answer session on Thursday. Many people asked Snowden about his response to President Barack Obama's speech that outlined his proposals to reform the NSA. The Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board also weighed in on Obama's reforms Thursday, releasing a report that the NSA's bulk phone records collection program is illegal and useless for preventing terrorism. RT's Ameera David talks to political commentator Sam Sacks, who has been following Snowden's chat session closely. Here's A Snowden Leak We Shouldn't Know About
"The National Security Agency has planted spy software and hardware into 100,000 computers worldwide, not 50,000 as previously reported. These bugs allow the agency to conduct surveillance even on computers that are offline — or air-gapped, as they are referred to in spy lingo, per documents leaked by Edward Snowden. The implants are tiny radio transceivers that must be surreptitiously planted inside a computer, either before being shipped to manufacturers or afterward by an agent with access to the computer as part of a so-called "black bag job." The transceivers, which can look like normal USB plugs, then "infiltrate" and "exfiltrate" data from the hacked computers to an NSA relay station the size of a large suitcase, up to eight miles away."* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. *Read more here from Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai / Mashable: http://mashable.com/2014/01/15/nsa-hacked-computers-offline/- published: 19 Jan 2014

Sentencing Snowden
Sentencing Snowden
It's been seven months since former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden up and left with 1.7 million of the agency's intelligence files and released them to the press. The leaks were slow and agonizing for the American surveillance state. Snowden now says his mission is accomplished, while courts, media outlets, politicians and citizens alike form camps on either side of him. Ben Wizner, ACLU director and legal advisor to Edward Snowden, and Tom Nichols, professor of National Security Affairs at the U.S. Naval War College join Steve Paikin to discuss motives, damages and outcomes. CIA Analyst Discusses the Assassination of Edward Snowden
MOSCOW | Edward Snowden, who is targeting him for assassination? Poison, drone, bullet? There is no doubt a target is painted on his back. So far his allies have rallied to his cause and this year, the Sam Adams Award was delivered to him by them. It is presented to an official in the intelligence field who has demonstrated extraordinary levels of ethics. The presentation to the NSA whistleblower was made in Moscow. Snowden's passport was revoked by officials for the Obama Administration. An online petition to have the passport re-instated has already gathered over 44,000 signatures. The Sam Adams award has been in existence since 2002. In past years, recognition has been extended to people including Julian Asssange, in 2010. Samuel Provance, who exposed abuses at Abu Ghraib, was the 2006 winner. The Sam Adams award was presented to Edward Snowden last month by Ray McGovern. A veteran CIA analyst, he worked at the White House for 27 years. During that time, he frequently delivered intelligence updates to several presidents. McGovern left the Federal Government, and is now a political activist working to bring government abuses to light. Ray McGovern is our guest on the show today. He has the unique insight of someone who spent years delivering the most sensitive information in the world to the Commander-in-Chief. McGovern is here to talk to us about whistleblowers, the surveillance state, and the current threats to Edward Snowden. 'Snowden showed us world sleepwalks into Orwellian horror' - ex-intelligence officer
The art of espionage has changed -- the internet has given the surveillance agencies unprecedented capabilities to snoop at anyone, anywhere. On the other side are the whistleblowers, to whom World Web has given the chance to see what is really going on behind the closed doors of Big Brother. Who is right? Is wrongdoing justified for the sake of security? Today we put these questions to the former intelligence officer, Michael Smith.
