The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) was established in 1964 as a permanent intergovernmental body. It is the principal organ of the United Nations General Assembly dealing with trade, investment, and development issues.

The organization's goals are to "maximize the trade, investment and development opportunities of developing countries and assist them in their efforts to integrate into the world economy on an equitable basis." (from official website). The creation of the conference was based on concerns of developing countries over the international market, multi-national corporations, and great disparity between developed nations and developing nations.

In the 1970s and 1980s, UNCTAD was closely associated with the idea of a New International Economic Order (NIEO).

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development was established in 1964 in order to provide a forum where the developing countries could discuss the problems relating to their economic development. UNCTAD grew from the view that existing institutions like GATT (now replaced by the World Trade Organization, WTO), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and World Bank were not properly organized to handle the particular problems of developing countries.

Vijay Prashad is the George and Martha Kellner Chair in South Asian History and Professor of International Studies at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, USA. He is the author of fourteen books. In 2012, he will publish five books, including Arab Spring, Libyan Winter (AK Press) and Uncle Swami: South Asians in America Today (The New Press). Two of his most well-known books, Karma of Brown Folk (2000) and Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting (2002), were chosen by the Village Voice as books of the year.^{[citation needed]}. His book The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World (2007) was chosen as the Best Nonfiction book by the Asian American Writers' Workshop in 2008 and it won the Muzaffar Ahmed Book Award in 2009.

Prashad is a member of the International Organization for a Participatory Society.

A well-known journalist and commentator, Prashad writes for Frontline (a column "Letter from America" and occasional reported stories) and for Asia Times. He is a contributing editor for the Kathmandu-based Himal and an editor for the Lahore-based magazine Bol. He is a regular writer for Counterpunch, a magazine edited by Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair.

Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi is a Kenyan politician and the immediate former Member of Parliament for Kimilili constituency in Bungoma North District of Western Province. He also served as Minister for Trade and Industry.

Dr. Kituyi obtained a BA in Political Science and International Relations from Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, graduating with honours and a PhD in Social Anthropology, a Master of Philosophy in Development Studies and a Diploma in Science, Comparative Production Systems, all from the University of Bergen, Norway.

Prior to joining Parliament, Dr. Kituyi worked as Director at the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS), Nairobi and as Programme Officer at the Norwegian Agency for International Development (NORAD), also in Nairobi.

He was first elected to Parliament on a Ford-Kenya ticket in 1992, becoming the Opposition Chief Whip. His predecessor was the late veteran politician, Elijah Mwangale. He was re-elected in 1997 and 2002. However, in the 2007 General Elections, he lost to newcomer David Simiyu Eseli of Ford-Kenya.

Charles Gore (22 January 1853 - 17 January 1932) was a British theologian and Anglican bishop.

Gore was the third son of the Honourable Charles Alexander Gore, and brother of the fourth Earl of Arran. His mother, Augusta Lavinia Priscilla (née Ponsonby) was a daughter of the fourth Earl of Bessborough.

His parents sent him to be educated at Harrow School, London. Afterwards he became a student in the University of Oxford (Balliol College).

In 1875 he was elected fellow of Trinity College, Oxford.

He was ordained to the Anglican priesthood in 1878.

From 1880 to 1883 he served as vice-principal of Cuddesdon Theological College.
