Vilnius Region (Lithuanian: Vilniaus kraštas, Polish: Wileńszczyzna, Belarusian: Віленшчына, former English: Wilno or Wilna Region) is the territory in the present day Lithuania that was originally inhabited by ethnic Baltic tribes and was a part of Lithuania proper, but came under East Slavic and Polish cultural influences over time.
The territory included Vilnius, the historical capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Lithuania, after declaring independence from the Russian Empire, claimed the Vilnius Region based on this historical legacy. Poland argued for the right of self-determination of the local Poles. As a result, throughout the interwar period the control over the area was disputed between Poland and Lithuania. The Soviet Union recognized it as part of Lithuania in the Soviet-Lithuanian Treaty of 1920, but in 1920 it was seized by Poland and became part of short lived puppet state of Central Lithuania, and was subsequently incorporated into the Second Polish Republic.
Vilnius (Lithuanian pronunciation: [ˈvʲɪlʲnʲʊs]; Polish: Wilno, see also other names) is the capital of Lithuania and its largest city, with a population of 542,664 as of 2015. Vilnius is located in the southeast part of Lithuania and is the second largest city in the Baltic states.
Vilnius is the seat of the Vilnius City Municipality and of the Vilnius District Municipality. It is also the capital of Vilnius County. The first known written record of Vilnius as the Lithuanian capital is known from Gediminas' letters in 1323.
Vilnius is classified as a Gamma global city according to GaWC studies, and is known for the architecture in its Old Town, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Its Jewish influence until the 20th century has led to it being described as the "Jerusalem of Lithuania" and Napoleon named it "the Jerusalem of the North" as he was passing through in 1812. In 2009, Vilnius was the European Capital of Culture, together with the Austrian city of Linz.
Poles in "Republic of Lithuania" - local nation who live mainly in the Wilno (Vilnius) region, discriminated by "lithuanian" authorities by stealing property, closing schools, lithuanization of local names of cities and villages, lithuanization of surnames. Polish people have lived there before II World War, they were majority in the city of Wilno and territory around it. In '30 of XX century 66% of its inhabitants were Polish, about 30% - Jews, "Lithuanians" - only 1-2%. After 1945 Poles were expelled to post-war polish territory and replaced by "Lithuanians". Now Poles are 16-19% in Wilno but they are still majority in two counties around - Soleczniki (80%) and Wilno county (60%). Modern "Lithuanians" have nothing common with former Grand Duchy of Lithuania. GDL was part of pre-partiti...

It all started at Trakai castle, one of the largest castles I've seen so far, located on the island. Nice exibitions inside (glass, embroidery, porcelain) and lots of information on historical facts made me realize how rich and powerful Lithuania was back in time. Vilnius was only 30 km away, so after I had some memorable time by the lake and admired colorful houses of Trakai town, I headed right there. I would say, old town of Vilnius ha...
