,, this is not a part of an old saved from the junk yard engine rebuild that can be left out,,, rebuilding an old rusted,, seized engine is not an easy clean task,,, rust and more rust,,, and it has to be removed from all moving parts and gasket or mating surfaces (remember these type m engines did not use a gasket on the crankcase side covers,, but a little gasket sealer will stop an oil leak),, leave a comment, subscribe, pass it on ,to be continued,,- published: 10 Jan 2014

International Novelty Orchestra, Nat Shilkret director - Fate Tango (1926)
Nathaniel Shilkret (Dec.25,1889 - Feb.18,1982) was born in New York, to an Austrian immigrant family. He was an American composer, conductor, clarinetist, pianist, business executive (A&R; man), and music director (Victor, RKO and MGM). He was a child prodigy, touring the country with the New York Boys' Orchestra from the ages of seven to thirteen as their clarinet soloist. From his late teens to mid-twenties he was a clarinetist in the best New York music organizations, including the New York Philharmonic Society (under Vassily Safanov and Gustav Mahler), the New York Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolitan Opera House Orchestra, the Russian Symphony Orchestra, Victor Herbert's Orchestra, Arnold Volpe's Orchestra, Sousa's Grand Concert Band, Arthur Pryor's Band, and Edwin Franko Goldman's Band. He was also a rehearsal pianist for Walter Damrosch, playing for stars that included dancer Isadora Duncan. He joined the Foreign Department of the Victor Talking Machine Company (later to become RCA Victor) around 1915, and soon was made manager of the department. In 1926 he became "director of light music." He made many thousands of recordings, possibly more than anyone in recording history. His son Arthur estimated the sales of these records was of the order of 50 million copies. He was the conductor of choice for many of Victor's innovative recordings. He conducted the first record made by the "electric method," the first commercial Victor LP (in 1931) and was the first conductor to successfully dub an electrically recorded orchestra background over the recordings of Enrico Caruso, Victor's star artist, who died before the vastly superior electrical recording method was developed. He conducted the orchestra for the premiere recording of George Gershwin's symphonic poem An American in Paris, in 1929. This recording was one of five recordings conducted by Nathaniel Shilkret that eventually earned Grammy Awards. Roarin' 1920s: The Ipana Troubadours - Who? (J Kern) 1926
The Ipana Toubadours, Dir. S.C. Lanin with Vocal Chorus by The Singing Sophomores (aka The Revelers) -- Who? Fox-Trot from "Sunny" (J.Kern), Columbia 1926 (USA) NOTE Sam LANIN (Samuel Charles Lanin, b. 1891 -- d. 1977) was an American jazz band leader of the Russian /Jewish origin, one of three Lanin brothers (Howard and Lester were also bandleaders). Sam played clarinet and violin while young, and in 1912 he was offered employment in Victor Herbert's orchestra, where he played through World War I. In 1918 he moved from Philadelphia to New York City and began playing at the Roseland Ballroom. Therefore, his first dance band was named the Roseland Orchestra and they started recording for the Columbia Company in the early 1920s. Through the whole decade of the 1920s, Sam Lanin's band made enormous number of sweet jazz sides for dancing, all of them clean, well-orchestrated arrangements, under countless pseudonyms: Lanin's Jazz Band, Lanin's Arcadians, Lanin's Famous Players, Lanin's Southern Serenaders, Lanin's Red Heads, Sam Lanin's Dance Ensemble. He also directed house bands for various ephemeric labels: Cameo, Diva, Velvet Tone, Harmony, Banner, Oriole. Among the bands he directed were Ladd's Black Aces, The Broadway Bell-Hops, The Westerners, The Pillsbury Orchestra, Bailey's Lucky Seven. He had a rotating cast of noted musicians playing with him: Phil Napoleon, Miff Mole, Red Nichols, Jimmy & Tommy Dorsey, Bix Beiderbecke, Eddie Lang, Bunny Berigan, Nick Lucas and Frankie Trumbauer. In addition to his recordings, he also played on radio: his first bband, the Roseland Orchestra performed on New York radio every Monday from 1923 to 1925. He entered into a sponsorship with Bristol-Myers for their toothpaste, Ipana - a top selling brand of toothpaste in the early 20th century. As a result, his ensemble was renamed The Ipana Troubadours. The exposure on network radio made the Ipana Troubadours one of the most well-known dance bands of the 1920s. In 1928 and 1929, Bing Crosby recorded with Sam Lanin. Unfortunately, the 1929 stock market crash hit him hard; in 1931, Sam Lanin lost his contract with Bristol-Meyers, his radio show and the name Ipana Troubadors. By the middle of the 1930s, he was spending much of his time cutting transcription discs. While his fame had waned, he was still well off from the money he saved in the 1920s and retired from the music business by the end of the 1930s. Essentially forgotten, Sam Lanin died in 1977, having never returned to music.- published: 09 Jan 2014

AL JOLSON in "A PLANTATION ACT" 1926
A copy of A Plantation Act was found in the National Archives, mislabeled as a preview for The Jazz Singer, universally known as 'the first talkie' produced by Warner Brothers. The accompanying vitaphone soundtrack disc was also found inside a film storage garage in the Midwest . However, the disc was broken up into 5 pieces. Audio technicians under the auspices of the UCLA film preservation society, chemically bonded the fragments together and re-recorded the soundtrack, digitally removing the pops and clicks created by the disc damage. What emerged here is the short film from 1926 that was the per-cursor to "The Jazz Singer". "A Plantation Act" is in fact, the first all talking film (short) that Jolson starred in. It was filmed 'live' at the then New York City Opera House and subsequently opened in October of 1926 at the Colony Theater in New York. As fans will know, the restored copy is also now available on the Jazz Singer special DVD set by Warner Brothers. Most enthusiasts believe (and rightly so), that this 10 minute short is probably the closest we can come today to seeing Al Jolson live, as he would have performed on stage. It is, indeed, a remarkable piece of entertainment history!- published: 30 Sep 2013
