South Sudan's permanent war: the longest conflict in Africa
The Longest War: Sudan's civil war raged for over two decades. This film gives incredible insight into its bloody and violent history. For more information and downloads visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=56025 This film chronicles Sudan's decades-long civil war, a violent mix of colonial legacies, religious tensions, and new found oil wealth. Sudan's civil war, which raged from the 1980s until a peace deal was brokered in the early 2000s, marks the longest war ever to take place on the African continent. Dr. Hassan al-Turabi, who served as intellectual mentor of the Sudanese regime for much of the war, states that "We have never known slavery," although many in the south claimed that the north launched regular slave raids into their territory. "There were times when the situation seemed quite hopeless," remarks Nhial Deng, former SPLM Secretary of Foreign Affairs, on the fitful negotiations that finally led to a peace treaty in 2005. South Sudan's short-lived moment of hope
Hope For The Future: As South Sudan tumbles into another crisis, this short-lived moment of hope becomes even more heartbreaking. For more information and downloads visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=56282 Darfur may dominate the headlines but in Southern Sudan, the story is more positive. After a 21 year civil war, peace seems to be returning to the region and refugees are coming home. The peace deal agreed between the SPLA and government gives the South greater autonomy. Now, millions of displaced people are returning. "They're our people. They have a right to be here," reasons Vice President of Southern Sudan, Dr Machar. But tensions between the North and South still abound. According to the agreement, the South was supposed to receive 50% of all oil revenues. But some claim this is not happening. "We have received very little revenue", states Machar. Militias, allegedly armed by the government, are still creating terror in the South. Despite this, people like Martha are optimistic. "I'm very happy because I've come home." ABC Australia: Ref-3071 Journeyman Pictures is your independent source for the world's most powerful films, exploring the burning issues of today. South Sudan: How did the world's youngest state unravel so quickly?
Over the past 13 days, more than 1,000 people have died in fighting in South Sudan, with more than 80,000 forced to flee their homes. But on the 26 December, the day after Christmas, the United Nations admitted that it hadn't see the violence coming. So how is that the current conflict in South Sudan - that some are saying has already spiraled into civil war - sprang out of seemingly nowhere? Conflict in South Sudan: Dispatch One
Today, after two weeks of fighting in South Sudan that is believed to have killed more than 1,000 people, representatives from both the government and rebel forces met in Ethiopia to discuss the possibility of peace. But back in South Sudan, the fighting continued. Both sides hope to gain territory to strengthen their position at the bargaining table. Rebels captured the city of Bor days ago; now the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) is trying to win it back. Bor is 125 slow, painful miles from the capital city of Juba—a trip made far quicker by helicopter. And so VICE flew to the front lines with the SPLA. Sudan Strikes Cease Fire Deal
Sudan Strikes Cease Fire Deal
President Uhuru Kenyatta has welcomed Thursday's agreements to end fighting in South Sudan but warned that the next step in the search for peace would be more difficult. In a statement, Kenyatta said the region would continue to support such efforts but the ultimate solution would depend on how South Sudan leaders "hold themselves accountable" to their people. Fighting in South Sudan was expected to come to an end on Friday following the signing of a ceasefire agreement by representatives of the warring factions meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The peace deal entered on Thursday stipulated that the fighting was to cease within 24 hours of signing. The United Nations estimates that more than a thousand people have been killed and half a million others displaced from their homes since the fighting started mid last month. South Sudan and the media of conflict
South Sudan and the media of conflict
When fighting broke out a month ago in the world's youngest country, South Sudan, the story was framed as just another tribal power struggle coming out of Africa. A more precise analysis is that the conflict is really political in nature - a fallout between the president and the vice president, with some ethnic elements fighting it out on the ground. Those who are critical of the media say that, when it comes to Africa, all too often international news outlets resort to the same formula - reducing just about any conflict to the tribal level, which seems to explain everything without actually telling us anything. Is there a hierarchy of knowledge in reporting about Africa, with more authority given to international journalists?- published: 18 Jan 2014

George Clooney: Endgame in Sudan
In little over a month, the people of Southern Sudan will vote for independence, placing millions of civilians in the potential path of war. George Clooney and the Enough Project recently spent time in Sudan along the border between the north and south and saw what a return to war could look like. This video from the trip highlights the challenges Sudan faces as it works toward holding a peaceful referendum and avoiding a return to civil war. It's not inevitable. We can stop this war before it starts. Visit SudanActionNow.org to find out more.

Inside Story - South Sudan: Sliding into civil war?
As the UN decides to push more troops into the country, we ask if it can save the world's newest nation from collapse. To discuss this, Inside Story presenter Folly Bah Thibault is joined by guests: Choul Laam, the chief of staff for the secretary general of the ruling Sudan People's Liberation Movement; Douglas Johnson who has written several books on South Sudan including The Root Causes of Sudan's Civil Wars; and Rebecca Garang, an adviser to the president of South Sudan, Salva Kiir, and the widow of John Garang, who was the chairman of the SPLM, the rebel movement that signed a peace deal with the Sudanese government in 2005 - a deal that eventually led to South Sudan's independence.- published: 25 Dec 2013
