Brazil president Lula on Honduras and Iran 2009 News
Brazil s president said on Wednesday that Iran is entitled like any other country to use nuclear energy for peaceful means while also calling for patience in the resolution of the crisis in Honduras. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said that Iran s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had assured him at a meeting on Wednesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly that his country s nuclear programme was intended solely for peaceful purposes and that he had no reason to doubt him. As I think Brazil has the right to use nuclear energy for peaceful ends that s the same thing I defend for Iran that they can have the same rights as Brazil and as other countries Silva said at a news conference. I defend Iran in the same way that I defend Brazil with respect to the right to nuclear energy. Brazil s 1988 constitution requires that its nuclear programme be used exclusively for peaceful means but the country was engaged in a stand off with the International Atomic Energy Agency in 2004 after denying inspectors access to the centrifuges used to enrich uranium. A deal was eventually reached. Silva said that if Iran violated international norms against nuclear proliferation it would have to face sanctions just as any other country would. Calling Iran a great partner Silva defended Brazil s relationship with the country despite growing international criticism over its nuclear programme and allegations of fraud in the recent re-election of Ahmadinejad. Silva said Ahmadinejad would visit Brazil in November and that he expected he himself would visit Iran sometime at the beginning of next year. Asked about Ahmadinejad s denial of the Holocaust Silva said that this was not his position but that if the Iranian president thinks differently that s his problem not mine. It doesn t hurt relations with the Brazilian state. On Tuesday in an interview with the Associated Press Ahmadinejad muted his remarks on the Holocaust an event he has frequently questioned as a matter of historical fact. Using markedly less confrontational language than he has in the past Ahmadinejad said he was not interested in debating historical details. Instead he said he wanted to focus on what he calls the wrong done to Palestinians who lost their land when the state of Israel was formed. Ahmadinejad said the Holocaust was used as a pretext for the repression of Palestinians. He grouped the deaths of Jews during World War II with those of m millions of others who died. A number of Jewish organisations and gay rights groups protested in Rio and Sao Paulo when Ahmadinejad was expected to visit Brazil earlier this year. More recently vocal critics have attacked Brazil s stance recognising the legitimacy of Iran s election. Silva said it was not his place to question Iran s electoral process and defended Brazil s right to forge its own foreign policy. Silva said Brazil was also sending a business delegation to look into the possibility of investment in Iran. Silva- published: 04 Nov 2013

Brazil Sends Troops Over Land Dispute
Brazil Sends Troops Over Land Dispute
A task force of the Brazilian National Force is to be deployed in areas disputed by Indians and farmers in the western state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Federal troops are due to arrive in the region just ahead of an auction to raise funds for the farmers' private security personnel. An indigenous man was killed in the area in clashes with the police in May. A 2010 court ruling granted the Terena ethnic group exclusive rights over the land, but land owners dispute it. They accuse the Indians of invading their farms in Sidrolandia (1,200km west of Rio de Janeiro) and say they have to defend themselves. The "Resistance Auction" on 7 December aims to raise funds for hiring private security guards and is expected to sell at least 1,000 cattle and tons of grain. 'Gun fight' "Up until now, they invaded and we retreated. If they invade other land, there will be a gun fight, and nobody knows what the consequences might be," Francisco Maia, the president of state farmers' association Accrisul told the BBC's Joao Fellet, in Brasilia. The land owners want the government to come up with an alternative plan to solve the land dispute which already led to violence in May and June. In 2010, a court ruled that the land where their farms stand, the Buriti Indigenous Lands, should be owned exclusively by the Terena peoples. But the farmers refuse to leave and demand compensation for any loss of land. The conflict in Sidrolandia escalated at the end of May, culminating with the killing of Osiel Gabriel Terena. After the episode, in June, about 200 soldiers were deployed at a disputed farm. The conflict is only one of about 80 in Mato Grosso do Sul, BBC Brasil reports. Brazil's constitution includes a progressive land policy, under which about 13% of the country has been set aside as indigenous territories. But despite having the largest indigenous population in Brazil, about 9% of the total, the state of Mato Grosso do Sul has only 0.7% of the official indigenous lands.- published: 29 Nov 2013
