Dramatic High-Speed Chase Through Downtown Los Angeles | Silver Corvette Driver Killed Dramatic High-Speed Chase Through Downtown Los Angeles | Silver Corvette Driver Killed Dramatic High-Speed Chase Through Downtown Los Angeles Driver Killed in Downtown LA After Hour Long Police Pursuit Pursuit of Silver Corvette Comes to Violent End in Downtown L.A. Authorities continued to investigate Saturday after a man who led police on a high-speed pursuit through Los Angeles for more than an hour Friday night died after he crashed into another car and was shot by police. The chase began before 9:30 p.m. as sheriff's deputies pursued the silver Corvette for reckless driving, officials said. "There was great concern that he was going to hurt someone severely," LAPD Lt. Andy Neiman said. Deputies abandoned the chase and left a helicopter over the car as it sped through surface streets near Huntington Park in Cudahy. Minutes later, CHP officers began pursuing the driver as it drove with it lights off through neighborhoods. The LAPD then picked up the pursuit, adding to the multitude of squad cars chasing the Corvette, which eventually turned its headlights back on as it sped through South Los Angeles. By 10:30 p.m., the pursuit moved into downtown Los Angeles when the Corvette slammed into another car as it drove westbound through the intersection of South Los Angeles Street and East Olympic Boulevard. "It did look like a very violent collision, very traumatic," Neiman said. The second car sheared a fire hydrant after it was slammed into by the Corvette. The drivers of that car ran out of the car and were later taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The Corvette slid and stopped, and the driver stumbled out of the car. "The suspect got out of the vehicle and at that point, something occurred that prompted the officer-involved shooting," Neiman said. Medics could be seen appearing to try to revive the suspect by performing CPR. His body was then taken from the scene. Police have confirmed to NBC4 that the suspect has died. Neiman said that the officers involved in the shooting still need to be interviewed, and at this time, it is still early in the investigation.- published: 15 Dec 2013

The Bloods gang was formed initially to compete against the influence of the Crips in Los Angeles. The origin of the Bloods and their rivalry with the Crips dates to the 1970s, where the Pirus street gang, originally a set, or faction, of the Crips,[7] broke off during an internal gang war, and allied with other smaller gangs to found the gang that would eventually become known as the Bloods. At the time, Crips sets outnumbered Bloods sets by three to one. To assert their power despite this difference in numbers, Bloods sets became increasingly violent, especially against rival Crips members.[2] The Pirus are therefore considered to be the original founders of the Bloods. During the rise of crack cocaine, the gang's focus shifted to drug production. Bloods sets operate independently of each other, and are currently located in almost all states.East CoastBlood sets on the East Coast are often seen as affiliated with the United Blood Nation, a gang which originated in Rikers Island. The United Blood Nation, simply called the Bloods, formed in 1993, within the New York City jail system on Rikers Island's GMDC (George Mochen Detention Center), sometimes called C 73. GMDC was used to segregate problem inmates from the rest of the detention center. Prior to this time period, the Latin Kings were the most prevalent and organized gang in the NYC jail system. The Latin Kings, with mostly Hispanic members, were targeting African American inmates with violence. These African American inmates, organized by some of the more violent and charismatic inmates, formed a protection group which they called the United Blood Nation. This United Blood Nation, which was actually a prison gang, was emulating the Bloods street gangs in Los Angeles. Several of the leaders of this recently created prison gang formed eight original Blood sets to recruit in their neighborhoods across New York City.[8]By 1996, thousands of members of the Blood street gang were establishing themselves as a formidable force among gangs and continued a steady drive for recruitment. At this time, the Bloods were more violent than other gangs but much less organized. Numerous slashings (razor blade or knife attacks) were reported during robberies and discovered to be initiations into the Bloods. This blood ritual became the trademark for the Bloods. The man, believed to be in his 40s, was shot an unknown number of times as he exited a late-model silver Corvette at the end of the chase, Los Angeles Police Officer Rosario Herrera said. The chase ended at 10:30 p.m. Friday when the Corvette struck an unidentified vehicle at the intersection of East Olympic Boulevard and South Los Angeles Street, she said. A videographer at the scene said the Corvette appeared to have struck a Nissan Maxima from behind, and sustained extensive damage to the front end. Aerial footage that was broadcast showed the suspect being shot and collapsing on his back on a sidewalk, on what the videographer said was the northwest corner of the intersection. The footage and the videographer's description suggested the suspect was a white male, wearing jeans, a grey sweatshirt and white shoes. Another videographer said CPR was performed on the suspect, who was then taken away by ambulance. The vehicle had been pursued by Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and California Highway Patrol vehicles before the LAPD took over at 10:16 p.m., Herrera said. ``It was in our jurisdiction and it just happened that the officers were in the area,'' Herrera said. ``We did go into tailing mode and then we went into pursuit.'' Lt. Josh Barton of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department East Los Angeles station said the pursuit began in Cudahy at 9:30 p.m., when deputies attempted to pull the driver over for drunk and reckless driving.
