I used both gallium and mercury to destroy an aluminum heat sink. (aka "aluminium" for those who insist Americans are stupid because we spell aluminum differently) :) About 10 years ago, there was an article in Popular Science about "rusting aluminum" where gallium was smeared on an aluminum I-beam, and then Hg was added to it. The video was also posted on Youtube a couple years later, but it was pre-HD day. I always wanted to show a more detailed version of that process. A couple years after the "rusting aluminum" article came out, I did my own experiment using only Hg on an aluminum heatsink. It wasn't as destructive as using gallium, but it was the first time the process was shown in a video. - Gallium and mercury both pose hazards, so always read the MSDS sheets for each one and use the proper personal protection equipment. I really didn't know for sure. Here ya go! The reason I used this type of foam sponge is because it had small cells and not a lot of voids like a typical sponge. I really don't believe the results would have been any different other than large quantities of Hg pooling in those voids and potentially splashing around much more.- published: 21 Oct 2013

SO MANY people asked me to put mercury in a microwave oven, I have lost count how many people have asked me to try this. I finally managed to find a microwave oven so I could do this. What will happen? - Note: There was a little water on the surface of the mercury. I store the mercury with a layer of water on the top to prevent oxidation. I've always been hesitant about doing ANY microwave videos because so many people do them. Another issue is just getting good video imagery through the grill of the microwave oven. But, a microwave oven fell in my lap and because many people wanted to SEE this, I decided to do it despite the lack-luster results. But... NOW we know what happens.- published: 11 Dec 2013

I had to do a little thinking for this project and come up with a way of boiling mercury, but not release ANY fumes (off-gassing). There were many risks involved with this. If I had over-pressurized the glass test tubes, they could have blown up. Using this device, I was able to control the internal pressures and prevent that. Freddie Mercury (born Farrokh Bulsara; Gujarati: ફરોખ બલ્સારા, Pharōkh Balsārā); 5 September 1946 -- 24 November 1991)[2][3] was a British musician, singer and songwriter, best known as the lead vocalist and lyricist of the rock band Queen. As a performer, he was known for his flamboyant stage persona and powerful vocals over a four-octave range.[4][5][6] As a songwriter, Mercury composed many hits for Queen, including "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Killer Queen", "Somebody to Love", "Don't Stop Me Now", "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and "We Are the Champions". In addition to his work with Queen, he led a solo career, and also occasionally served as a producer and guest musician (piano or vocals) for other artists. He died of bronchopneumonia brought on by AIDS on 24 November 1991, only one day after publicly acknowledging he had the disease. Mercury was a Parsi born in Zanzibar and grew up there and in India until his mid-teens. He has been referred to as "Britain's first Asian rock star".[7] In 2002, Mercury was placed at number 58 in the BBC's poll of the 100 Greatest Britons, in 2006, Time Asia named him one of the most influential Asian heroes of the past 60 years,[8] and he continues to be voted one of the greatest singers in the history of popular music. It is legal to buy and ship in the U.S. But there are restrictions and/or bans to ship it out of the U.S. You must be over 18 buy it.
