Angry Dennis Rodman defends North Korea basketball game
Basketball star Dennis Rodman on Tuesday defended his controversial visit to North Korea with a team of former NBA players, saying it was a "great idea for the world." In an exclusive interview with Chris Cuomo of CNN's "New Day" from the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, Rodman reacted angrily when pressed on whether the group should have traveled there given recent events in the secretive country. The trip takes place just weeks after North Korea shocked the world by announcing the purge and execution of Kim's once-powerful uncle. There are also concerns for the welfare of U.S. citizen Kenneth Bae, who's been detained there for more than a year. The other former NBA players are due to take part in a controversial basketball game on the birthday of Kim Jong Un, the country's young, unpredictable leader. The friendly contest with North Korea's team is planned for Wednesday, when Kim is believed to turn 31. North Korean Camps - North Korea
North Korean Camps - North Korea
November 2008 The only escapee of North Koreas most brutal prison camp has lived to tell us a story of unspeakable horror. Starved of food and common humanity, Shin proves that gulags are still a tragic reality. We were always hungry. Shins most vivid memory of his life in the camp is the constant hunger he felt, food made me escape, even if it was going to cost me my life. The only thing that interested me was the food. Before his escape three years ago, he didnt even know that a world existed beyond the barbed wires. Until then, his life had been one of torture, hard labour and complete isolation. My mother was supposed to inform on me and me on her. He believed she deserved her fate as he witnessed her execution. I blamed her. I had no real feelings as a kid. Shin didnt know love, only violence. Once the guards beat a little girl on the head so hard, she died the next day. He eventually escaped through a gap in a high-voltage fence. His charred legs still bear the scars. As horrible as it is, Shins story is not unique. Wang, himself a former prisoner, is a prominent writer on the subject. He believes that oppression in North Korea will keep increasing: The brutality of the system has grown to the point where Kim Jong Il now fears that he will suffer the same fate as Caucescu of Romania. He simply wants to kill all his enemies.- published: 24 Sep 2013

Dennis Rodman Loses It with CNN Chris Cuomo from North Korea: One Day The Door Will Open Here
Dennis Rodman Drops F-bomb Live on CNN (CNN) — Basketball star Dennis Rodman on Tuesday defended his controversial visit to North Korea with a team of former NBA players, saying it was a "great idea for the world." In an exclusive interview with Chris Cuomo of CNN's "New Day" from the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, Rodman reacted angrily when pressed on whether the group should have traveled there given recent events in the secretive country. Apparently referring to Kim, Rodman said, "I love my friend. This is my friend." Asked if he would take the opportunity to ask North Korean leaders about Bae, Rodman suggested the Korean-American had done something wrong but did not say what that was. Growing angry with Cuomo and jabbing his finger toward the camera for emphasis, Rodman said, "Kenneth Bae did one thing ... If you understand what Kenneth Bae did. Do you understand what he did in this country? No, no, no, you tell me, you tell me. Why is he held captive here in this country, why? ... I would love to speak on this. "You know, you've got 10 guys here, 10 guys here, they've left their families, they've left their damn families, to help this country, as in a sports venture. That's 10 guys, all these guys here, do anyone understand that? Christmas, New Year's ... "I don't give a rat's ass what the hell you think. I'm saying to you, look at these guys here, look at them ... they dared to do one thing, they came here." Fellow player Charles D. Smith tried to calm the discussion but Rodman carried on, becoming increasingly agitated. "Ain't no shill ... let me do this," he said to Smith, shaking his hand from his arm. Addressing Cuomo, he continued, "Really? Really? I want to tell you one thing. People round the world, around the world, I wanna do one thing. "You're the guy behind the mic right now. We're the guys here doing one thing. We have to go back to America and take the abuse. Do you have to take the abuse that we're gonna take? Do you sir, are you going to take the abuse? "One day, one day, this door is going to open because these 10 guys here, all of us, Christie, Vin, Dennis, Charles, ... I mean everybody here, if we could open the door just a little bit for people to come here and do one thing." Some of the players visible in shot behind Rodman looked increasingly uncomfortable as he challenged the CNN anchor. Smith pointed out that the basketball players made up only a part of a group of about 50 people visiting North Korea, with other Americans among them. 'He's got a great heart' Smith also sought to defend Rodman, saying the visit was about basketball, not politics. The players were invited by North Korea, Smith said, and are there as a kind of "cultural exchange" and to "put smiles on people's faces," not to influence the country's leaders. "We've been doing these games for 3½ years," he said. "Outside of what people know of Dennis, you don't know Dennis. He's got a great heart, his passion is about children and families, that's why we are here. "We are here because it's about doing great will around the world." Smith outlined the charity projects he has been involved in worldwide through his sport, including visiting typhoon victims in Asia. "We're doing what we do, we play basketball and that's what we love to do," Smith said. "We didn't know it was going to take this kind of negative spin with what we are doing because we're not politicians, we're not ambassadors. We're here to do what we've been doing most of our lives." Smith apologized for "the storm that has been created by our presence." He also suggested that Rodman's use of the word "friend" for Kim should not be taken at face value. Darren Prince, Rodman's agent for 16 years, told CNN on Sunday that Kenny Anderson, Cliff Robinson, Vin Baker, Craig Hodges, Doug Christie, and Smith would play against the North Korean senior national team. The current trip is Rodman's fourth to the isolated nation, part of a project he has described as "basketball diplomacy." But the U.S. State Department says that it has nothing to do with Rodman's visits to North Korea and that attention should be focused on the brutality of Kim's regime. "Friend for life" Rodman, 52, struck up an unlikely friendship with Kim when he traveled to North Korea for the first time in February, bringing a team of Harlem Globetrotters for an exhibition game watched by Kim, who is a basketball fan.- published: 07 Jan 2014

Watch Dennis Rodman Freak Out In North Korea
"Former NBA star Dennis Rodman, better known now for bizarre behavior than anything he ever did on the court, launched into an unintelligible rant against a CNN anchor on Tuesday during an interview from North Korea, where he is on his fourth visit in less than a year. Rodman, 52, brought six fellow retired professional basketball players to the rogue country for a game against the North Korean national team Wednesday, the 31st birthday of dictator Kim Jong Un. The trip has drawn reproving statements from the National Basketball Assn. and its retired players' affiliate, as well as from human rights advocates and democratic governments concerned that the purported goodwill gesture sends the wrong message to a ruthless leader."* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break it down. *Read more here from Carol J. The Real Doctor Evil: Kim Jong Il's North Korea
Free for a limited time only: The secret life of the Former North Korea dictator! For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=17934 North Korea was identified as part of the axis of evil by George Bush. Taking an archive-based trip through North Korea's recent history, we find out it's probably a fair assessment. 'The Real Dr Evil' explores the rise of Kim Jong-il after his father, Kim II- sung's, death. His father, who is referred to as 'Great Leader' by North Korea, was a highly praised and well-respected leader -the founder of North Korea and commander of the fifth largest standing army in the world. Following the death of Kim II- sung, Kim Jong- il was left to fulfil the position of his father, however many doubted he had the right skills to follow in his footsteps. He was seen as a black sheep as rarely taken seriously. Everyone felt that Kim Jong- il would struggle to keep up to his father's standards. Were they right? 'The Real Dr Evil' follows the fascinating journey of Kim Jong- il -- from his childhood experiences, through his education, to his controversial leadership. When the great economic collapse of the mid-90s struck, Jong-il left many of his citizens to suffer. But as many began to lose hope, Jung-il began approaching many western countries for help. Many perceived this distress signal positively, others did not. Old Street Films/Rob Lemkin - Ref 2512- published: 17 Dec 2013

North Korean Motorcycle Diaries
North Korean Motorcycle Diaries
For the past decade, New Zealanders Joanne and Gareth Morgan have been living the semiretired lifestyle of their dreams, traveling around the world on motorcycles alongside a few of their closest friends. They've traversed all seven continents on their bikes, with routes as varied as Venice to Beijing, Florida to northern Alaska, and South Africa to London, just to name a few. Gareth funds his own trips, many of which he uses to pursue philanthropic endeavors, particularly in the social-investment space. He is able to do so with money he's made as an economist and investment manager—one who has earned the reputation for criticizing unethical practices in New Zealand's financial-services industry. In late August, the Morgans embarked on their most ambitious journey yet, at least physically. The real journey began years ago, when they decided they wanted to ride the Baekdudaegan, a mountain range that stretches the length of North and South Korea's shared peninsula. After countless hours of negotiation and coordination with both governments, they were granted permission. It was, the Morgans believe, the first time anyone's ever traveled through both countries like that since the partitioning of Korea in 1945. By making the trip they hoped to demonstrate how Koreans can come together over what they have in common. To symbolize this, the Morgans took some stones from Paektu, a holy mountain in the North, and brought them to Hallasan, a similarly sacred peak in the South. Joanne and Gareth shot the entirety of their trip, the footage from which they have graciously allowed us to cut into a short film that will premiere on VICE.com this month. In some ways, the footage makes the Korean coast look alternately like California, China, and Cuba. It's a beautiful view few foreigners have seen, and even if planning the road trip straight through the Demilitarized Zone required working within parameters set by the highly choreographed and restricted confines of North-South Korean diplomacy, this was a journey worth documenting from start to finish. Dennis Rodman trains in North Korea for Kim Jong-un's birthday basketball game
Subscribe to ITN News: http://goo.gl/zRYiYn With controversy back home in the US rife, former basketball star Dennis Rodman got on with training in North Korea on Tuesday, ahead of an exhibition match for the country's supreme leader Kim Jong-un's birthday. Video footage from North Korea's state news agency KCNA showed current North Korean and former US basketball players shooting hoops during a training session. The ball game marks Rodman's fourth trip to Pyongyang, where he and his team of retired players will hold games for Kim's birthday, which is believed to fall on January 8, although it has never been officially confirmed. On previous visits, Rodman spent time dining as a guest of Kim, with whom he says he has a genuine friendship, though he didn't meet Kim on his third trip. His latest visit follows the brutal public purge of Kim's powerful uncle Jang Song Thaek, who was executed in December. South Korean President Park Geun-hye has described recent events in the North as a "reign of terror." Report by Mark Morris. North Korean travel experts have slammed the BBC for putting local guides at risk, saying the country would hold them responsible for the actions of the journalists who posed as LSE students on a tour of the country. And two tour guides speaking to HuffPost UK said it was relatively easy for anyone to visit the country, and even obtain a journalist visa. The London School of Economics has expressed fury at BBC journalists who went undercover on a student trip to North Korea, claiming the corporation recklessly endangered students. 25 Reasons North Korea Is The Most Ridiculous Dictatorship Ever
Brutal, immature, comical, strange, and disillusioned would probably be some of the adjectives people think of when asked to describe the leadership in North Korea. We'll take that a step further. Here are 25 reasons North Korea is the most ridiculous dictatorship ever. https://twitter.com/list25 https://www.facebook.com/list25 http://list25.com Check out the text version too! - http://list25.com/25-reasons-north-korea-is-the-most-ridiculous-dictatorship-ever/ Here's a preview: The World Food Programme estimates that 6 million of North Korea's 25 million people are in need of food aid or are chronically malnourished. Nearly 2 million people died as a result of a famine in 1990 cause by poor government farming policies. There have even been reports that several regions have turned to cannibalism. All North Koreans must abide by one of 28 state approved haircuts Only military and government officials can own motor vehicles North Korea actually recieves a small amount of defectors from other nations. These include 6 American soldiers from after the Korean War. A few soldiers even decided to stay in North Korea after being released from POW camps North Korea has one of the largest armies in the world, surpassed only by India, China, and the United States In fact, North Korea spends about one third of its national income on the military. The border between North Korea and South Korea is one of the most militarized in the world. Kim Jong-Un's brother Kim Jong-Nam is known for bizarre behavior. In 2001 he was arrested in a Japanese airport on a fake Dominican passport under the name Pang Xiong which literally translates to "fat bear". He told authorities he was trying to go to Disneyland afterwhich he ended up being exiled to China. This is why Jim Jong Un is now the supreme leader instead. Here's a fun fact about Kim: he went to boarding school in Switzerland where his classmates say he was obsessed with basketball but not very bright. The North Korean military dug tunnels into South Korean territory. Before they got discovered they painted the sides of the tunnels black and claimed they were digging for coal. In 1978 Kim Jong-Il kidnapped a South Korean film director in Hong Kong to jump start North Korea's film industry. The director managed to escape 8 years later during a film festival in Vienna. The most famous film to be produced as a result of his kidnapping was a Godzilla ripoff called Pulgasari in which a small rice doll grows into a huge mythical creature that helps the peasants of the land overthrow their monarch. Kim Jong-Il was executive producer. According to Kim Jong-Il's official biography he was born on Mount Paektu under a double rainbow as a new star appeared in the sky. He also supposedly learned to walk at 3 weeks old, corrected his elementary school teachers while in class, and ended up writing over 1500 books. Did we mention that he shot a 38 under par on the national golf course before retiring from the sport because he couldn't do any better. No wonder he's supreme leader. Despite all this he was deathly afraid of flying and would only travel around the country in armored trains stopping at stations built specifically for him. One Russian diplomat described how he had lobster airlifted to his train everyday Nearly a quarter million North Koreans live in prison camps surrounded by electrified fencing All legal televisions are tuned to state-controlled domestic programming North Korea has a vast network of informants who monitor their fellow citizens and report to authorities.
