The response from a Vatican delegation to questioning by the United Nations over child sex abuse scandals is met with disappointment by members of the Survivors\' Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP).

Full Story:

The Vatican\'s response to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child over its handling of allegations of child sex abuse was found unsatisfactory by a US-based victims advocacy group.

Representatives from the Holy See are being publicly questioned for the first time by an international panel at the Palais Wilson in Geneva over the child abuse scandal.

The U.N. panel will assess the Church\'s adherence to the 1990 U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, a treaty guaranteeing a full range of human rights for children, which the Holy See has signed.

Members of the Survivors\' Network of those Abused by Priests say they are disappointed with the Vatican\'s response.

Free for a limited time only: The secret life of the Former North Korea dictator! For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/?lid=17934 North Korea was identified as part of the axis of evil by George Bush. Taking an archive-based trip through North Korea's recent history, we find out it's probably a fair assessment. 'The Real Dr Evil' explores the rise of Kim Jong-il after his father, Kim II- sung's, death. His father, who is referred to as 'Great Leader' by North Korea, was a highly praised and well-respected leader -the founder of North Korea and commander of the fifth largest standing army in the world. Following the death of Kim II- sung, Kim Jong- il was left to fulfil the position of his father, however many doubted he had the right skills to follow in his footsteps. He was seen as a black sheep as rarely taken seriously. Everyone felt that Kim Jong- il would struggle to keep up to his father's standards. Were they right? 'The Real Dr Evil' follows the fascinating journey of Kim Jong- il -- from his childhood experiences, through his education, to his controversial leadership. When the great economic collapse of the mid-90s struck, Jong-il left many of his citizens to suffer. But as many began to lose hope, Jung-il began approaching many western countries for help. Many perceived this distress signal positively, others did not. Old Street Films/Rob Lemkin - Ref 2512

Sex Abuse Victims
Sex Abuse Victims "Disappointed" by Vatican's Response to U.N.
  • Order:
  • Duration: 2:41
  • Updated: 17 Jan 2014
The response from a Vatican delegation to questioning by the United Nations over child sex abuse scandals is met with disappointment by members of the Survivors' Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP). Full Story: The Vatican's response to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child over its handling of allegations of child sex abuse was found unsatisfactory by a US-based victims advocacy group. Representatives from the Holy See are being publicly questioned for the first time by an international panel at the Palais Wilson in Geneva over the child abuse scandal. The U.N. panel will assess the Church's adherence to the 1990 U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, a treaty guaranteeing a full range of human rights for children, which the Holy See has signed. Members of the Survivors' Network of those Abused by Priests say they are disappointed with the Vatican's response. [Miguel Hurtado, SNAP Member]: "I was very deceived, very disappointed by the reply of the Vatican because they are not replying to questions that they were asked by the commission. The commission didn't ask for guidelines, because guidelines are as good as they are implemented. They were asking for implementation. They were asking for particular cases, for particular instances and how they have dealt with that and the reply of the Vatican is that it only had jurisdiction over 30 children. Obviously the Catholic Church has one billion followers and it has influence over a lot more children's lives than these 30 that they mention." Founder, Barbara Blaine says there are over 100-thousand victims in the US alone, and many more around the world. [Barbara Blaine, Founder of SNAP]: "The fact that they continue to claim that they have jurisdiction only over the Vatican City is really disappointing because we know full well that they have jurisdiction over every bishop in the whole world and what we want to see is the Vatican punish the bishops who cover up the sex crimes. And we want them to turn over the information they have about crimes to police." In Germany, a Catholic priest named only as Andreas L admitted to 280 instances of sexual abuse involving three boys over eight years. In December 2013, Pope Francis ordered the formation of a child protection committee to address the sexual abuse of children in the Catholic Church and consider ways to better screen priests. In the same month, however, the Vatican refused to provide the United Nations rights panel with information on the Church's internal investigations into the sexual abuse of children by clergy. The CRC will publish on February 5 its concluding observations of the report delivered by the Vatican on Thursday, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. For story suggestions please contact tips@nma.com.tw Four people in China's Jiangsu Province have become the latest people to fall ill with H7N9, a strain of bird flu new to humans, according to reports. The three women and one man are in critical condition and are being treated in the provincial capital of Nanjing, health authorities said. The cases are the second batch to be confirmed after Reuters reported that, "two men in Shanghai, aged 87 and 27, fell sick in late February. A woman in Anhui province also contracted the virus in early March and is in critical condition. "At this point, these three are isolated cases with no evidence of human-to-human transmission", the WHO representative in China, Dr. Michael O'Leary, told reporters on Monday. China's National Health and Family Planning Commission confirmed on Sunday that the three cases were the H7N9 virus, which had not previously been known to infect humans. "A new virus tends to be more virulent in the beginning. Either it is going to become a truly human virus, in which case we have to start dealing with it regularly, or it is going to be primarily an animal virus with just a rare human case," O'Leary said. Some Chinese had complained that authorities took too long before announcing the deaths on Sunday. O'Leary said the government acted properly as the deaths needed to be investigated." On Tuesday, China reported four more cases of H7N9 bird flu, and raised the total of H7N9 avian influenza cases to seven. H7N9 bird flu is previously unknown in humans but has already killed two people last month in China, and left one in critical condition in Anhui. The World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Monday there was no evidence that the H7N9 strain could be transmitted between people, but that it was investigating the outbreak. The report of H7N9 bird flu from Fox News below : " The four new patients in China's eastern Jiangsu province were all in critical condition and receiving emergency treatment, the Xinhua News Agency said, citing the Jiangsu provincial health bureau. A woman in Anghui province who caught the virus in early March is also in critical condition. No mutual infection was discovered in any of the seven cases, Xinhua said. A group of 255 people identified by authorities to have had close contact with the seven H7N9 victims have also not shown any flu symptoms, it said. The four patients in Jiangsu - a province next to Shanghai - were aged between 32 and 83 and only one, a woman of 45, had worked in the market slaughtering poultry, Xinhua said.
