Hi. I'm Mike Patrick and this is how to do a basic Sybil style cut. It looks like this and this is the basic explanation. The angle of how the cards are going to move is a little bit difficult to describe, so I'm going to show you step-by-step and you should follow along like this. First, we're going to get into what's referred to as Z position. That means being like this. A lot of times you will try to do these individual steps. It should all be in one clip. So, first thing that you're going to practice is just lifting up of small packet of cards off the top of the deck. If you can do that, the next part should be relatively simple. You place your thumb on the back portion of the deck and by lifting up this packet will also moving forward. As long as your thumb is contacting that back part you should go into an automatic Z position like this. So, once you get the hang of doing the Z, that'll make the next part possible. The next thing that you need to learn before we go into the full cut is this: I pick up the cards and now my left hand is going to rotate and I'm going to grip these two corners but I'm going to essentially reverse my hand. So, what happens is this: I lift up this packet; I twist; and now my thumb is over here, and this is here; and I'm going to bring this forward. So, this is the action that you should do. This. You're just going to bring this forward a few times like this. These are very important to understand the motion that's about to happen. You're going to do both of those essentially at the same time. You go into Z, like so. Now, this packet's in the way. It shouldn't really make a difference. It's not much more difficult. It'll feel like it's in the way--try to ignore it. When you're in Z, you grip the packet like I described, like we're gripping in the air, but you're in Z. Then, you allow these cards to come around it. I extend my index finger to provide clearance. Once I'm here, I now push my index finger forward and I allow it to swing around and then I bring my index finger in. Now, my index finger is going to contact this outer right hand corner as these cards are coming down. This will bring this packet out to the front. To close this Sybil, you're going to bring your index finger around; you're going to swivel these cards; they're going to travel around your left middle finger. So, these cards get swiveled like this. I crawl my index finger underneath and I allow them to flip over on to the stack. So, if I have this in the middle again, all I do is I have it around this middle finger and then I use my index finger to flick it over. In speed, the entire cut looks like this. You can also combine this Sybil into different chains. So, if you were to do a Sybil cut and you get to this position instead of just flipping it over I do two one-handed cuts and close like this. It allows it to have a much more elegant feel and make your flourishes more complicated. Experiment and play and you'll be just fine.- published: 29 Nov 2013

Emphasizing high-quality instructional videos, Howcast brings you experts who provide accurate information in easy-to-follow tutorials on everything from makeup, hairstyling, nail art design, and soccer to parkour, skateboarding, dancing, kissing, and much, much more. Hi, I'm Mike Patrick, and this is How you do the Butterfly Cut. The action begins with two one-handed Charlier cuts. So you're going to go into straddle grip as we discussed in that video. I will pivot the cards like this, break it with my thumb and I allow my index finger to go underneath as I get into straddle grip with my other hand. I do two simultaneous one-handed Charlier cuts. There's a slight difference though. When you divide them and you do the one-handed cuts, after you clear you're going to jam your index fingers back in dividing those packets like so. Your other fingers curl over the top of it, and your left hand goes first followed pretty much at the same time by your right hand, and you get those as square as you can so now you're in this kind of condition. You allow this packet to roll forward, so you're going to move your middle fingers over the top and you're going to move the left hand packet forward and your right hand packet over, and then you bring this one back pulling the index fingers towards you. Doing this slow results in the cards getting a little bit off-skew, but what you're going to do is you're going to aim for getting these as tight as you can. Like if you just put them together for example like this, your end result isn't going to be very pretty. So you try to get everything as square as you can all the way through the cut, very important. So you get into straddle grip with both hands, do your one-handed Charliers, insert your index fingers, and then you put them into each other, move them forward again rolling the middle fingers over, moving these packets in one at a time using your thumbs, and then rolling this backwards. Then you just place them face down. Here's another quick tip. If you start with the cards in your right hand and you pivot them in this direction, the top and bottom stock, meaning the top 10 to 13 cards and the bottom 13 cards will stay the same. So if I do the cut with the five of clubs face-up, if I do it out of my left hand you'll see that that five of clubs ends up somewhere in the deck; however, if I do it with the right hand starting when I have the Ace of hearts face-up on top, the Ace of hearts ends on top of the deck just like the other one. So if you're doing a card trick where you need the card to stay on top or bottom, this is a great way to handle it. Again, going through it one more time. Do the one-handed Charlier cuts, put your fingers inside, roll them into each other, roll them forward, move these in, and come back, square up, turn the deck over, and that is how you do the butterfly cut.- published: 18 Dec 2013

flourish is an interactive installation in public space.
The project connects a public display with a smartphone of a passing pedestrian.
People are invited to draw their own flower with a provided web-app accessible via QR Code.
Furthermore, it is possible to interacte with the installation through body movement.
The aim of the project is to slow-down the passing people by enabling interaction and visualization of something interesting and beautiful on a public display instead of showing commercial content.
The project was realized in HTML5 with the support of the JavaScript 3D library github.com/mrdoob/three.js/ and Microsoft Kinect for the course "Public Displays - Und jetzt?" at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam under the direction of Monika Hoinkis.

Flourish
http://slanted.org/project/camille-utterback-flourish/
Flourish is a 70-foot long site-specific artwork commissioned by the Liberty Mutual Group for the corporation’s headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts. This unique piece combines MacArthur Fellow Camille Utterback’s signature interactive installation work with a new display method – projection onto multiple layers of custom glazed and sandblasted glass.
Flourish consists of seven double-layered 5 by 8 foot glass panels, three of which are interactive. As viewers walk by the interactive panels, projected elements that correspond to the glass design react to viewers’ presence and location – colors splash across the background, a tree grows leaves, or releases them to float on the wind.
For this installation, Slanted Studios shot custom ink footage to match the organic feel of the paint and glass. Our custom programming triggered both the ink texture library and generated the growing and falling leaves. Mapping allowed for any of the projected elements to appear within or behind any layer of glass.

Hi, I'm Mike Patrick, and this is How to do a Cascade, a shuffle flourish. You take the cards, you shuffle them, and you allow them to simply cascade into your other hand. The method is that you must do a pharaoh shuffle. The better your shuffle is, the more smooth the cascade will fall. If you have big gaps in between it won't look so good, so this is why you wouldn't do it with a riffle shuffle. You need a lot of precision. So you do a pharaoh shuffle and you put them into an upside down "v". It looks like a "v" from my perspective, but you do it like this. You'll have to experiment with your hand size exactly where you want the cards to be positioned. You go into this like you're going and you place your thumb in between here, and I can hold this like this indefinitely. When you're ready to do the cascade, your pinky is here, your index finger is here, your thumb is on top, you place your other hand underneath, and you simply let go with your thumb. The cards will fall naturally in this position, and you'll have to deal with the fear of them falling all over the place a few times. Once you get past that to just let go and they will fall straight into a cascade. I often don't even bother using my thumb. What I do is I just shuffle them, position them, get these cards in a position I just let this hand drop right in front and it starts immediately. It's a very, very impressive way to end your shuffle. That's how you do a cascade.- published: 11 Dec 2013

Emphasizing high-quality instructional videos, Howcast brings you experts who provide accurate information in easy-to-follow tutorials on everything from makeup, hairstyling, nail art design, and soccer to parkour, skateboarding, dancing, kissing, and much, much more. Hi, I'm Mike Patrick, and this is how to do a triple cut. Looks like this. The action is very similar to a Charlier Cut, do not attempt to do this unless you do a Charlier Cut first. The action, you get into again the straddle grip like we've described before, that's the index finger on top, pinky at the back, these two fingers on the side, thumb on the side. You're going to let approximately a third of the deck go. And there are two ways to approach this. One is if you have smaller hands, one is if you have larger hands. Sometimes, hand size is subjective, so usually people that have hands that are large enough to do it, simply aren't flexible enough to do it, and they aren't holding the cards in the right area. So keep trying, see if it can work for you. I'll show you the first way. The first way is if you cut the cards, allow them to go like this, and then do this. The second method looks a little bit different. You do it like so. Subtle differences but I'll explain what they are. You're going to cut off a third of the deck and you're going to push them underneath your thumb. So that should be able to just hit right away. And then you're going to allow your thumb to release a smaller packet and you're going to cut both of those up like a standard Charlier Cut. So again, you let a portion of the cards go. Grip them underneath the thumb. Let the rest of the cards go, and they go on top. The other method which is a little bit different, and this is easier, you're going to let the cards fall just like before, but you're going to get them as if you're completing the Charlier Cut. Now you grip over with your thumb. And then you do the rest of the action. The reason this is easier is because you might find it difficult to clear and get your thumb like this. You can prevent this by pushing the cards more to your finger tips and stretching further, and then you should be able to do it. But if not, this is perfectly acceptable. No one will know the difference. You simply regrip the cards and finish the cut like this. So again, you drop the third, they go underneath your thumb, take off another third, finish the cut. That's how you do the triple cut.- published: 18 Dec 2013

Hi. I'm Mike Patrick, and this is how to do the one-handed fan. It looks like this. Your alternative is to do it in both hands, and you can make an S fan and close it like this. This is how to do it. You should hold it in. . .you're going to use your pinky and your index finger, and you put it right into this kind of grip. So this should be not a death grip, but you should be able to hold this securely like this without letting go. You're not actually going to hold them entirely like this during the course of the fan. You're going to place your thumb on the bottom edge right around here, and you're going to sort of let go. And when you do this, you're going to push with your thumb and pull with your other fingers. This is difficult to do with an entire deck and make it look even. Usually, this type of fan is performed with half the deck like this. And you get a very even spread. So again, the basic mechanics are you hold them in this position, and you place your thumb on the actual border of the cards underneath, stretching way down. Let go. And you're going to pull with these fingers downward, and you're going to push with your thumb this direction, in a sort of smearing action. I've heard someone call this a smear fan once, and it's sort of for good reason, because you do this. This will take a little bit of time to get looking good. But when you do, you can do this, and you close. And it looks very fancy. You can minimize when you're dividing the deck into two hands. You simply riffle the cards like this. Allow them to swivel up so that your other hand can grip in a mirror action. And then you spread both of them like this. And you can make the S, and then just reverse the action to close them back into a dealing position. I'm Mike Patrick, and that's how to do a one-handed fan.- published: 08 Dec 2013
