The Catskill Mountains - Upstate New York
The Catskill Mountains - Upstate New York
The Catskill Mountains are a large area in the southeastern portion of the U.S. state of New York. They are located approximately 100 miles north-northwest of New York City and forty miles southwest of Albany, starting just west of the Hudson River. The Catskills occupy much or all of five counties (Delaware, Greene, Schoharie, Sullivan, and Ulster). As a cultural and geographic region, the Catskills are generally defined as those areas close to or within the borders of the Catskill Park, a 700,000-acre (2,800 km2) forest preserve protected from many forms of development under New York state law. Geologically, the Catskills are a mature dissected plateau, a once-flat region subsequently uplifted and eroded into sharp relief by watercourses. The Catskills form the northeastern end of, and highest-elevation portion of, the Allegheny Plateau (also known as the Appalachian Plateau).[1][2] Although the Catskills are sometimes compared with the Adirondack Mountains further north, the two mountain ranges are not geologically related, as the Adirondacks are a continuation of the Canadian Shield. Similarly, the Shawangunk Ridge, which forms the southeastern edge of the Catskills, is part of the geologically distinct Ridge-and-Valley province, and is a continuation of the same ridge known as Kittatinny Mountain in New Jersey and Blue Mountain in Pennsylvania. Climatically, the Catskills lie within the Allegheny Highlands forests ecoregion. The Catskills are well known in American culture, both as the setting for many 19th-century Hudson River School paintings and as the favored destination for urban vacationers from New York City in the mid-20th century. The region's many large resorts gave countless young stand-up comedians an opportunity to hone their craft. In addition, the Catskills have long been a haven for artists, musicians, and writers, especially in and around the towns of Woodstock and Phoenicia, New York. Upstate New York is a region of the U.S. state of New York north of the core of the New York metropolitan area. There is no clear or official boundary between Upstate New York and Downstate New York, and other names exist for regions north of New York City — either as part of, or distinct from, the Upstate region.- published: 30 Sep 2013

AURORA IN WINTER
In Aurora, West Virginia, on a highland plateau in the Allegheny Mountains, a creative environment for artists and scholars has been established in restored historic buildings once part of a 19th century resort. It is known as the "Aurora Project".
These photos were taken during my stay at "Bessie's House" while heavy snow and frigid temperatures transformed the surrounding farms and woodlands into a winter wonderland.

No Man's Land Trailer
Uniquely located between the Allegheny Mountains and the Blue Ridge Plateau of Virginia...the Roanoke Valley is surrounded by both world class whitewater and controversial access issues. 'No Man's Land' is the definitive film documenting the struggles surrounding John's Creek, the subject of an ongoing legal dispute between local landowners and whitewater enthusiasts. The documentary then takes the viewer on a wild ride into the beauty and danger that defines Virginia's most notorious gorge, Jewell Creek.

SUSQUEHANNA RIVER 2012
he Susquehanna River (play /ˌsʌskwəˈhænə/) (Lenape: Siskëwahane [3]) is a river located in the northeastern United States. At 464 miles (747 km) long,[4] it is the longest river on the American east coast that drains into the Atlantic Ocean, and with its watershed it is the 16th largest river in the United States,[5][6] and the longest river in the continental United States without commercial boat traffic.[7] It flows through three states: New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. It forms from two main branches, with the "North Branch", which rises in upstate New York, regarded by federal mapmakers as the main branch.[1] The shorter West Branch, which rises in western Pennsylvania, joins the main stem near Northumberland in central Pennsylvania.
The river drains 27,500 square miles (71,000 km2), including nearly half of the land area of Pennsylvania. The drainage basin (watershed) includes portions of the Allegheny Plateau region of the Appalachian Mountains, cutting through water gaps in the lateral mountain ridges in a broad zigzag course to flow across the rural heartland of southeastern Pennsylvania and northeastern Maryland. The river empties into the northern end of Chesapeake Bay, providing half of the Bay's freshwater inflow. Chesapeake Bay is in fact the ria of the Susquehanna.

Rising as the outlet of Otsego Lake in Cooperstown, New York, the north branch of the river runs west-southwest through dairy country, receiving the Unadilla River at Sidney and the Chenango in downtown Binghamton. At Athens Township (just south of Waverly, New York) in northern Pennsylvania, just across the New York state line, it receives the Chemung from the northwest and makes a right angle curve between Sayre and Towanda to cut through the Endless Mountains in the Allegheny Plateau. It receives the Lackawanna River southwest of Scranton and turns sharply to the southwest, flowing through the former anthracite industrial heartland in the mountain ridges of northeastern Pennsylvania, past Wilkes-Barre, Nanticoke, Berwick, Bloomsburg, and Danville. It receives the smaller West Branch from the northwest at Northumberland, just above Sunbury.
