Visiting Kaesong | Travel to North Korea
Kaesong was the capital of the entire Korean peninsula during the Koryo Era and is, therefore, brimming with ancient history just waiting to be uncovered. A popular tourist spot for both locals and foreigners, the region is also famous for its proximity to the Joint Security Area - the only place on the Korean DMZ where both sides stand toe-to-toe.

South Korean workers leave Kaesong
http://www.euronews.com/ Their cars piled with belongings, South Korean workers have begun to leave the Kaesong industrial zone jointly run with the North.
Around 200 South Koreans work at a number of factories at the site, which was shut down by North Korea last week amid rising tensions on the divided peninsula.
There were tearful embraces for those being left behind.
"We hope the problem can be resolved smoothly," said one worker. "All the workers in Kaesong are suffering now. I hope things get better so they don't have to suffer anymore."

At this early stage, it's unclear when or even if the Kaesong industrial complex will reopen.
One thing we know for sure is that the inter-Korean complex has had a turbulent history.
Kim Hye-sung has this report. e
On the North Korean side of the Demilitarized Zone,... the Kaesong Industrial Complex -- the single joint business of the two Koreas -- was launched in 2003 and opened in 2004.
The joint park is largely financed by South Korea.
The factory zone currently hosts more than 120 South Korean companies which employ some 54-thousand North Korean workers.
The estate is a precious source of cash for the isolated and impoverished North.
Two years after its opening, the number of North Korean staff hit 10-thousand workers,... a year after it doubled,... and in 2012 it reached over 50-thousand.
The accumulated earnings from goods produced at the complex rose from some 1-hundred-million U.S. dollars in 2007 to 2 billion dollars in 2013.
Production at Kaesong accounted for 99 percent of inter-Korean trade last year.
The business park, virtually the only form of economic cooperation between the two Koreas, has become increasingly vulnerable to turbulent swings in inter-Korean politics.
In 2013, during a period of heightened cross-border tensions, Pyongyang effectively shut down the zone for five months by withdrawing its workers.
Two and a half years since it reopened, the Kaesong Industrial Complex stands at a point where it could be shut down for good putting an end to 13 years of operations.

Around 200 South Koreans work at a number of factories at the site, which was shut down by North Korea last week amid rising tensions on the divided peninsula.

The Kaesong site is symbolic. Before work was suspended, it was the last remnant of cooperation between the neighbours.
200 South Koreans remain at Kaesong. Food and fuel are thought to be running low.
A spokesman for South Korea's Unification Ministry described the North's lack of response to calls for food and supplies to be sent as "regrettable".
Kaesong opened in 2004 as part of a so-called sunshine policy of engagement and optimism between the two Koreas, still
technically at war after their 1950-53 civil conflict ended in a truce - but not a treaty.

Just a little over ten years ago, the two Koreas began operation of their jointly-run Kaesong Industrial Complex in the North Korean border city.
And our Sohn Jung-in gives us a look... at how far the inter-Korean cooperation project has come over the last decade... and also what the future might hold. On June 30th, 2004, 15 South Korean companies began running factories at the North Korean border city of Kaesong.
Ten years later, the Kaesong Industrial Complex has seen significant growth.
The number of South Korean businesses has jumped from 15 to 1-hundred-25... and the number of North Korean workers... from 6-thousand to 52-thousand.
The production volume at the factory zone has increased over 30-fold from 15 million U.S. dollars to nearly 470-million dollars at present.
But the complex has had its struggles.
Last year, North Korea unilaterally suspended operations for five months amid escalating inter-Korean tensions.
The two Koreas have held five rounds of talks to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents, but have failed to make much progress.
"The two Koreas do not have a framework for ministerial-level dialogue and almost all inter-Korean cooperation is at a standstill."
But despite the risks, South Korean businesses find Kaesong complex attractive.
The Kaesong complex offers cheap labor,... at a cost of around 150 dollars a month per worker,... and goods are transferred over land, which means they can be on the shelves the day they're manufactured.
"Small and medium-sized firms in South Korea struggle after five years in business, but those in Kaesong are flourishing even after 10 years. The two Koreas have formed an economic community, which we see as a small reunification."
The Kaesong complex is now taking baby steps towards globalization,... with around 20 foreign companies showing interest in investing in the joint business park,... but concerns about stability are holding the companies back.
Son Jung-in, Arirang News.
