Sandra Tola Harvey (née Casañas, January 19, 1962 – December 15, 2008), professionally known as Sandée, was an American freestyle music vocalist and an original member of the trio Exposé from 1984 to 1986, along with Alejandra "Alé" Lorenzo and Laurie Miller.

As a solo artist, Sandée released the singles "You're the One" and "Notice Me" (produced by C + C Music Factory), and an album, Only Time Will Tell, featuring the single "Love Desire". "You're the One" peaked at #11 on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Single Sales in 1987 and "Notice Me" peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in 1989.

Death and funeral

On December 15, 2008, Sandée was found dead in her Hollywood, Florida, home. The cause of death was determined to be a severe seizure. Services were held for Sandra on Saturday December 20, 2008 at Fred Hunter's funeral home. She was 46.

Sande society

Sande, also known as zadεgi, bundu, bundo and bondo, is a women's secret society in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and the Ivory Coast. The Sande society initiates girls into adulthood by rituals including female genital mutilation. It is alleged by its supporters to confer fertility, to instill notions of morality and proper sexual comportment, and to maintain an interest in the well-being of its members throughout their lives.

In addition, Sande champions women's social and political interests and promotes their solidarity vis-a-vis the Poro, a complementary institution for men. The Sande society masquerade is a rare and perhaps unique African example of a wooden face mask controlled exclusively by women – a feature that highlights the extraordinary social position of women in this geographical region.

Geographic extent

The Sande society is found throughout the Central West Atlantic Region, an ethnically plural and linguistically diverse region that lies within the littoral forest zone bounded by the Scarcies River and Cape Palmas. As early as 1668, a Dutch geographer named Olfert Dapper published a description of the "Sandy" society as it existed in the Cape Mount region of Liberia, based on a first-hand account that seems to date from 1628.
