Suchitra Sen A Legendary Icon Of Bengali Cinema Passes Away

Suchitra Sen a legendary Bengali film actress passed away today due to a sudden heart attack. She was 82. Let us go down the memory lane with this Greta Garbo of Bengali cinema.

As her eyes look up, a thousand hearts were set aflutter. Her sensuality lay in her eyes, her smile, her charming face, and the way she rendered her dialogues. She did not have to speak a lot to have an effect on the audience. Just a look was sufficient and you had people doting on Suchitra Sen as she was like a celestial nymph down on earth.

Yes, Suchitra Sen – a legendary Bengali cinema icon, a beautiful actress with a stentorian voice, an amazing natural, and a simple, down to earth personality is no more with us. She was undergoing a health treatment at a private hospital in Kolkata. Even at this age, she had not lost her magnetism and looked as serene and beautiful as she was in her younger days. She is survived by her daughter Moon Moon Sen and her grand daughters Raima Sen and Riya Sen. 

Suchitra Sen was admitted to the Belle Vue Clinic in South Kolkata sometime in the last week of December 2013. She was suffering from a chest infection. In fact, Dr. Subrata Maitra the renowned surgeon was heading the seven member medical board, responsible for her treatment. Her condition fluctuated from stable to critical and today she passed away after a sudden heart attack. She was 82.

This famous actress was a heart throb of many and in fact still lies etched deep down in every Bengalis heart. Suchitra Sens policy of being away from the limelight for as long as 30 years after she left acting earned her more respect in the eyes of her fans who concluded that one could not undo the simplicity and the modesty of this famous Bengali heroine.

The final rites would be conducted at a crematorium in the city. She has acted in more than fifty movies between the years 1952 to 1978. She has also acted in six Hindi films and then went into a recluse stage after her last film when she did not mingle with anyone but her family members.

Film goers and film stars across the country have expressed their grief and sorrow at the death of the legendary icon. She is very well known for her role in Aandhi a popular Hindi movie in which she acted with Sanjeev Kumar. She has also starred in 'Devdas', and 'Aandhi' . 'Saat Paake Bandha', 'Agnipariksha', 'Saptapadi' and 'Deep Jwele Jai' in Bengali are her popular movies. Songs like Tum Aa Gaye Ho Noor aa gaya hai, Is Mod pe jaatey hain, Tere bina zindagi mein koi are very close to everyone’s heart.

 

With a sensuous smile tipping down to a side, this Greta Garbo of Bengali cinema, Suchitra Sen would be missed a lot and with her, a huge era of amazing heroines slowly is ebbing down. A salute tto this legend.!
