He gave presentations for the ARSC: (Association of Recorded Sound Collections) in 2003 and 2004. Marc gave a lecture in 2010 to the Toronto Wagner Society and a Cantorial lecture at Queen's University, Kingston, October 2000. Marc's father was Jack Bernstein (1918-1988), President (and motion picture industry pioneer) of the Famous Players Theatres, Canada. His mother is retired soprano, Mary Simmons who worked with pianist Leonard Shure, violinist Joseph Gingold, and conductors: Ozawa, Stravinsky, Scherchen, and Suskind. Marc Bernstein's late grandfather and his 3 brothers were all distinguished North and South American Cantors, "The Four Borenstein Brothers." Akiva Bernstein (1893-1968) was Chazzan at Beth Tzedec Synagogue, Toronto: 1937-1956. Cantor Henoch Borenstein (1907-1996): (Philadelphia, New York City). Cantor Pinchas Borenstein (1902-1955) recorded 78s for Stinson and South American Victor 78s and was State Cantor, Argentina. Cantor Hershel Borenstein (1880-1947): bass/baritone, Philadelphia. Marc's father was a major influence on his life and love of great recordings on 78s. His mother, Mary Simmons currently is in a nursing home in Toronto.. Marc has been collecting 78s and LPs, since he was 14 years old in 1970. Mishel Piastro was born June 19, 1891 in Kerch, Russia (now in the Ukraine). His father, also Mishel, was a student of Leopold Auer and he taught his son. Piastro also studied with Auer from 1906-1911 while at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. In 1914, Piastro toured, and arrived in San Francisco in 1920, after having traveled via Shanghai and Canada. Piastro toured the U.S. and made his New York debut in Carnegie Hall on October 3, 1920, to good reviews. Piastro became a US citizen in 1927. He became Concertmaster of the San Francisco Symphony in 1925 under Alfred Hertz. From 1931 - 1943, Piastro became Concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic. Under Barbirolli, Piastro took up conducting, as Assistant Conductor of the orchestra beginning in 1941. This lead to Mishel Piastro being appointed conductor of the Longines Symphonette, a radio broadcasting orchestra. Joseph Schuster (1903--1969) was a cellist born in Constantinople of Russian descent. On a trip through Russia, the famous Russian composer Alexander Glazunov (1865-1936) heard young Schuster and was impressed with his talent. With Glazunov's help, Schuster entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music at the age of 10. At the time of the Russian Revolution, his family fled to Berlin where he continued his studies under Hugo Becker at the Berlin Hochschule. In 1929, Schuster was awarded the post of Principal cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Furtwängler, the youngest person ever to hold that position. He remained with the Berlin Philharmonic until 1934 when he moved to New York. His New York debut was a critical sensation, and he was immediately invited to become Principal cellist with the New York Philharmonic. One of the many highlights of his New York Philharmonic career was when he was scheduled to play Strauss's Don Quixote under Bruno Walter. Walter was ill that day and as a replacement, a very young Leonard Bernstein conducted in his debut with the New York Philharmonic. Overwhelmingly enthusiastic response by the audience and press ensured Bernstein's career was launched. In the late 1940s, Schuster decided to leave the New York Philharmonic and devote himself entirely to solo concert work. He and his family moved to Beverly Hills, California in 1947. He performed on a 1720 Goffriller cello, an instrument formerly owned by Emanuel Feuermann.
