So then a new video. I’ll start by saying that posting this video is probably the hardest decision i’ve ever made in terms of sharing content publicly. Parts of my life are very public whilst others remain private. My relationship with Ella lives in the private part of my life and has done for a little over two years now. Last christmas Ella went away travelling. She had planned to go for six months. This would be the longest we’ve ever been apart. 3 months in and on the run up to Ella’s birthday we were struggling. Copious amounts of Skype calls, texts and handwritten letters later we were finding the distance hard. During a Skype call Ella jokily challenged me to travel out to Australia and see her. I had a little money saved and some spare time so I decided to do it and arrive in time for her birthday. I filmed my journey as a way of showing her the process and sharing the story with friends and family. I had absolutely no intention of sharing it publicly. My fear of sharing experiences like this is that it would in some way commercialise our relationship. The emotions and actions in this film are deeply personal ones and I would hate to think that by capturing and sharing that it would somehow devalue those feelings. When I cut the film together I showed it to a few close friends and to my surprise more often then not it made them cry. I didn’t imagine it would have this impact however the filmmaker inside of me found it very satisfying. This video is and will remain very personal to me and for that reason it feels strange to share it with such a large amount of people. It took me six months to make the decision and i’m still not sure whether it was a good one or not… Importantly Ella feels very comfortable with it which was my main concern. Beyond that if other people watching the video feel a similar emotion to the one I felt whilst making it and to the one my friends felt whilst watching it then i’m a happy man.

At BTGR we record performances on a digital multi-track recorder with a direct line out from the desk and two ambient microphones. After the show we then apply a full mix to the audio and sync it to the footage, providing all acts with a good quality live video of their set.

This record is the first of three videos where I want to highlight Harry Bentley's vocals. To me, he was one of the finest singers of the early 1930s. While his often high pitched vocals might not suit the ears of modern listeners as well as Sam Browne or Al Bowlly, he was much in demand as a singer. Today his voice has a marvelous period feel to it, and I always enjoy listening to him. Harry's life was cut tragically short in 1935 (see biography below).
I apologize for the swishy sound on this record. As it is an unissued test, I hope I can be forgiven. As far as I can see, take 2 (the other side of this test) was used for release. There is no real difference between the two, apart from a small mistake from the trumpet player right before Harry's vocal. Take 2 was released on Broadcast Twelve Super 3182.
Harry Bentley was born in London in 1900. Although not as well remembered today as other singers of his period, Bentley was a very popular crooner in the early 1930s. He also played the drums. He is perhaps best remembered for his association with Jack Harris and Charlie Kunz. He first sang with Harris' band in 1930, and then from 1931-1932 before he joined Charlie Kunz from 1933-1934. He was also sought after for recording sessions, and was a regular visitor to the different studios in London. Some of the bands he recorded with includes Bertini, Arthur Rosebery, Carroll Gibbons, Harry Hudson, Van Phillips, Stanley Barnett, Jay Wilbur, Dave Frost, Nat Star, George Scott Wood and Louis Levy, just to mention a few. His earliest known recordings were with Tommy Kinsman's Florida Club Band in late 1929.
On January 26, 1934, Billy Merrin called him, and asked if he could come to the studio on a short notice, as Sam Browne had to go home with a very heavy cold. According to the story, he turned up still wearing his pyjamas, and did a first class job on the remaining titles.
In January 1934, while singing with Charlie Kunz and the Casani Club Orchestra, he was banned for a month by the BBC for telling listeners that the song "Twenty Soldiers And A Nurse" was very popular. This was strictly against policy!
Sadly, Harry Bentley died in March, 1935 after a 14-week illness, preceded by breathing problems which had begun to affect his word. He was only 34 years old. In July, many of his friends in the profession attended a ceremony to set up a tombstone to him at Edmonton Jewish Cemetery, North London.

The Gold Rush
The Gold Rush is a 1925 American silent comedy film written, produced, and directed by Charlie Chaplin. The film also stars Chaplin in his Little Tramp persona, Georgia Hale, Mack Swain, Tom Murray, Henry Bergman, and Malcolm Waite. Chaplin declared several times that this was the film for which he most wanted to be remembered. Though it was a silent film, it received Academy Award nominations for Best Music and Best Sound Recording upon its re-release in 1942.
Plot
The following is the plot of the 1942 re-release:
Big Jim, a gold prospector during the Klondike Gold Rush, has just found an enormous gold deposit on his parcel of land when a blizzard strikes. The Lone Prospector gets lost in the same blizzard while also prospecting for gold. He stumbles into the cabin of Black Larsen, a wanted criminal. Larsen tries to throw him out when Jim also stumbles inside. Larsen tries to scare both out using his shotgun but is overpowered by Jim and the three agree to an uneasy truce where they all can stay in the cabin.

Gold rush
A gold rush is an interval of feverish migration of workers to an area that has had a dramatic discovery of gold deposits. Major gold rushes took place in the 19th century in Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada, South Africa, and the United States, while smaller gold rushes took place elsewhere.
There were six major gold rushes. The permanent wealth that resulted was distributed widely because of reduced migration costs and low barriers to entry. While gold mining itself was unprofitable for most diggers and mine owners, some people made large fortunes, and the merchants and transportation facilities made large profits. The resulting increase in the world's gold supply stimulated global trade and investment. Historians have written extensively about the migration, trade, colonization, and environmental history associated with gold rushes.
Gold rushes were typically marked by a general buoyant feeling of a "free for all" in income mobility, in which any single individual might become abundantly wealthy almost instantly, as expressed in the California Dream.

So then a new video. I’ll start by saying that posting this video is probably the hardest decision i’ve ever made in terms of sharing content publicly. Parts of my life are very public whilst others remain private. My relationship with Ella lives in the private part of my life and has done for a little over two years now. Last christmas Ella went away travelling. She had planned to go for six months. This would be the longest we’ve ever been apart. 3 months in and on the run up to Ella’s birthday we were struggling. This record is the first of three videos where I want to highlight Harry Bentley's vocals. To me, he was one of the finest singers of the early 1930s. While his often high pitched vocals might not suit the ears of modern listeners as well as Sam Browne or Al Bowlly, he was much in demand as a singer. Today his voice has a marvelous period feel to it, and I always enjoy listening to him. Harry's life was cut tragically short in 1935 (see biography below). I apologize for the swishy sound on this record. As it is an unissued test, I hope I can be forgiven. As far as I can see, take 2 (the other side of this test) was used for release. So then a new video. I’ll start by saying that posting this video is probably the hardest decision i’ve ever made in terms of sharing content publicly. Parts of my life are very public whilst others remain private. My relationship with Ella lives in the private part of my life and has done for a little over two years now. Last christmas Ella went away travelling. She had planned to go for six months. This would be the longest we’ve ever been apart. 3 months in and on the run up to Ella’s birthday we were struggling. Copious amounts of Skype calls, texts and handwritten letters later we were finding the distance hard. During a Skype call Ella jokily challenged me to travel out to Australia and see her. I had a little money saved and some spare time so I decided to do it and arrive in time for her birthday. I filmed my journey as a way of showing her the process and sharing the story with friends and family. I had absolutely no intention of sharing it publicly. My fear of sharing experiences like this is that it would in some way commercialise our relationship. The emotions and actions in this film are deeply personal ones and I would hate to think that by capturing and sharing that it would somehow devalue those feelings. When I cut the film together I showed it to a few close friends and to my surprise more often then not it made them cry. I didn’t imagine it would have this impact however the filmmaker inside of me found it very satisfying. This video is and will remain very personal to me and for that reason it feels strange to share it with such a large amount of people. It took me six months to make the decision and i’m still not sure whether it was a good one or not… Importantly Ella feels very comfortable with it which was my main concern. Beyond that if other people watching the video feel a similar emotion to the one I felt whilst making it and to the one my friends felt whilst watching it then i’m a happy man.

This record is the first of three videos where I want to highlight Harry Bentley's vocals. To me, he was one of the finest singers of the early 1930s. While his often high pitched vocals might not suit the ears of modern listeners as well as Sam Browne or Al Bowlly, he was much in demand as a singer. Today his voice has a marvelous period feel to it, and I always enjoy listening to him. Harry's life was cut tragically short in 1935 (see biography below).
I apologize for the swishy sound on this record. As it is an unissued test, I hope I can be forgiven. As far as I can see, take 2 (the other side of this test) was used for release. There is no real difference between the two, apart from a small mistake from the trumpet player right before Harry's vocal. Take 2 was released on Broadcast Twelve Super 3182.
Harry Bentley was born in London in 1900. Although not as well remembered today as other singers of his period, Bentley was a very popular crooner in the early 1930s. He also played the drums. He is perhaps best remembered for his association with Jack Harris and Charlie Kunz. He first sang with Harris' band in 1930, and then from 1931-1932 before he joined Charlie Kunz from 1933-1934. He was also sought after for recording sessions, and was a regular visitor to the different studios in London. Some of the bands he recorded with includes Bertini, Arthur Rosebery, Carroll Gibbons, Harry Hudson, Van Phillips, Stanley Barnett, Jay Wilbur, Dave Frost, Nat Star, George Scott Wood and Louis Levy, just to mention a few. His earliest known recordings were with Tommy Kinsman's Florida Club Band in late 1929.
On January 26, 1934, Billy Merrin called him, and asked if he could come to the studio on a short notice, as Sam Browne had to go home with a very heavy cold. According to the story, he turned up still wearing his pyjamas, and did a first class job on the remaining titles.
In January 1934, while singing with Charlie Kunz and the Casani Club Orchestra, he was banned for a month by the BBC for telling listeners that the song "Twenty Soldiers And A Nurse" was very popular. This was strictly against policy!
Sadly, Harry Bentley died in March, 1935 after a 14-week illness, preceded by breathing problems which had begun to affect his word. He was only 34 years old. In July, many of his friends in the profession attended a ceremony to set up a tombstone to him at Edmonton Jewish Cemetery, North London.

Parts of my life are very public whilst others remain private. My relationship with Ella lives in the private part of my life and has done for a little over two years now. Last christmas Ella went away travelling. She had planned to go for six months. This would be the longest we’ve ever been apart. 3 months in and on the run up to Ella’s birthday we were struggling. So then a new video. I’ll start by saying that posting this video is probably the hardest decision i’ve ever made in terms of sharing content publicly. Parts of my life are very public whilst others remain private. My relationship with Ella lives in the private part of my life and has done for a little over two years now. Last christmas Ella went away travelling. She had planned to go for six months. This would be the longest we’ve ever been apart. 3 months in and on the run up to Ella’s birthday we were struggling. Copious amounts of Skype calls, texts and handwritten letters later we were finding the distance hard. During a Skype call Ella jokily challenged me to travel out to Australia and see her. I had a little money saved and some spare time so I decided to do it and arrive in time for her birthday. I filmed my journey as a way of showing her the process and sharing the story with friends and family. I had absolutely no intention of sharing it publicly. My fear of sharing experiences like this is that it would in some way commercialise our relationship. The emotions and actions in this film are deeply personal ones and I would hate to think that by capturing and sharing that it would somehow devalue those feelings. When I cut the film together I showed it to a few close friends and to my surprise more often then not it made them cry. I didn’t imagine it would have this impact however the filmmaker inside of me found it very satisfying. This video is and will remain very personal to me and for that reason it feels strange to share it with such a large amount of people. It took me six months to make the decision and i’m still not sure whether it was a good one or not… Importantly Ella feels very comfortable with it which was my main concern. Beyond that if other people watching the video feel a similar emotion to the one I felt whilst making it and to the one my friends felt whilst watching it then i’m a happy man.

This record is the first of three videos where I want to highlight Harry Bentley's vocals. To me, he was one of the finest singers of the early 1930s. While his often high pitched vocals might not suit the ears of modern listeners as well as Sam Browne or Al Bowlly, he was much in demand as a singer. Today his voice has a marvelous period feel to it, and I always enjoy listening to him. Harry's life was cut tragically short in 1935 (see biography below).
I apologize for the swishy sound on this record. As it is an unissued test, I hope I can be forgiven. As far as I can see, take 2 (the other side of this test) was used for release. There is no real difference between the two, apart from a small mistake from the trumpet player right before Harry's vocal. Take 2 was released on Broadcast Twelve Super 3182.
Harry Bentley was born in London in 1900. Although not as well remembered today as other singers of his period, Bentley was a very popular crooner in the early 1930s. He also played the drums. He is perhaps best remembered for his association with Jack Harris and Charlie Kunz. He first sang with Harris' band in 1930, and then from 1931-1932 before he joined Charlie Kunz from 1933-1934. He was also sought after for recording sessions, and was a regular visitor to the different studios in London. Some of the bands he recorded with includes Bertini, Arthur Rosebery, Carroll Gibbons, Harry Hudson, Van Phillips, Stanley Barnett, Jay Wilbur, Dave Frost, Nat Star, George Scott Wood and Louis Levy, just to mention a few. His earliest known recordings were with Tommy Kinsman's Florida Club Band in late 1929.
On January 26, 1934, Billy Merrin called him, and asked if he could come to the studio on a short notice, as Sam Browne had to go home with a very heavy cold. According to the story, he turned up still wearing his pyjamas, and did a first class job on the remaining titles.
In January 1934, while singing with Charlie Kunz and the Casani Club Orchestra, he was banned for a month by the BBC for telling listeners that the song "Twenty Soldiers And A Nurse" was very popular. This was strictly against policy!
Sadly, Harry Bentley died in March, 1935 after a 14-week illness, preceded by breathing problems which had begun to affect his word. He was only 34 years old. In July, many of his friends in the profession attended a ceremony to set up a tombstone to him at Edmonton Jewish Cemetery, North London.
