A lot of people asked for this in the comments for my other Blair video, so here we are, by popular request. I found it such a struggle to edit tbh and as a result it's a mix of so many different editing styles. I don't really like it so much, but since you wanted it and I did finish it, here it is anyway. Prejudiced Types: Reassessing Receptions to Futura Black and 1920s "Jazz" Typefaces
First released by Bauer in 1929 as the fourth weight of Futura, Futura Black amplified a growing trend of bold, often high-contrast display typefaces popular in advertising, described as Modern, Deco, or Jazz types. Despite the general popularity of the type styles, critics battled against the style as "loud" and "erratic," or as "going wrong on Modernism." These and later critiques separated Futura Black aesthetically and culturally from the rest of the Futura family. Whether purposeful or not, these critiques helped shape prevailing industry values of typography and type design. Labeling a typeface "Jazz" associated it with subversive and underground culture–a segregated world only furtively acknowledged outside its own realm, and looked upon largely by white culture as a bastion of dege...

North City Tech Meetup
Pick a Peck of Points: Many measures of digital type owe their origins to late-19th century changes in metal type design and manufacture—and a type foundry fire that led one firm to make changes that reverberated throughout the industry. Point sizes, a common baseline, character widths, and more originate before 1900, but still prove useful in digital design, whether for screen or print. Glenn Fleishman digs into type history and ties it into our present day in his talk.
Typefaces, fonts, graphic design impact us all perhaps more than you realize. Glenn’s presentation should be a glorious romp through type history up to modern times.

Additional information from email correspondence with Robert Magill on March 8, 2016:
The Thompson is a ‘sorts (individual piece of type)’ machine – i.e. it makes a long line of one character at a time of each character that is needed. The type is placed in type cases for later hand composition. The Thompson, in the twentieth century was manufactured by the Monotype Corporation.
Monotype also made a sorts caster called an Orphan Anne – much bigger and more complicated than the Thompson. It was developed from the same machine body as the Monotype Composition machine. I also have one of these in the barn, not yet working.
The Monotype Composition caster also casts individual letters, but they are casted in the order of the text that will be printed, so you get out of the machine lines of text ready to print – the type lines may be broken down after printing into a type case for hand composition, but this was not frequently done as the type was usually melted down for reuse in the machine. You are correct that the Monotype Composition Caster was coupled with a keyboard that made paper tapes, representing the text for printing, that were transferred to the caster to produce the type. This keyboard was very complicated as it represented the type and spacing for the lines and also calculated the line lengths to get fully justified lines as usually seen in books.
The Iron Hand Press is an Ostrander-Seymour Extra Heavy.
The large platen is a Golding Jobber 12 X 18,
And the smaller press is a Golding Pearl 7 X 11.

Here I will talk about 7 books that are staples in my letterpress library. When collecting wood and metal type/and or running a platen press, I suggest you have these books at hand. 1) Specimen Book and Catalogue 1923, American Type Foundry 2) American Metal Typefaces of the Twentieth Century, by Mac McGrew3) American Wood Type 1828-1900, by Rob Roy Kelly 4) Hamilton's Specimens of Wood Type Faces, 1907 (in the video I mistake the reprint as 1889, but it is 1907) 5) William H. Page Specimen Book, 1888 6) The Practice of Printing (or anything else written) by Ralph W. Polk 7)A Typographical Journey Through the Inland Printer 1893-1900, by Maurice Annenberg.

Labeling a typeface "Jazz" associated it with subversive and underground culture–a segregated world only furtively acknowledged outside its own realm, and looked upon largely by white culture as a bastion of degeneracy, rebellion, and hedonism. Their terms defined and justified parameters of "acceptable" or "true" modernism even when these definitions and values circumscribed the work of their creators. I will consider Futura Black as a case study of the problematic, perhaps racially-driven issues of typographic taste-making and authority, given the uses of Modern, Deco, Jazz, and even Black in typography as markers that continue to police our current understanding of modernism and design. In doing so I will address larger questions of representation and critical appropriation of "Jazz" as a way to describe an era, and how racial animosity influenced these descriptions.

Glenn Fleishman writes about modern technology and printing history from his home in Seattle. He's a senior contributor at Macworld and writes for the Economist, TidBITS, Fast Company, and many others. Glenn has written dozens of editions of books in the Take Control series. He's currently building 100 tiny type museums.
