Major 7.2 Earthquake Balilihan Philippines
ST LOUIS (LALATE) -- A 7.2 Philippines earthquake today 2013 has just struck. The Philippines earthquake today October 15, 2013 began in the afternoon hours. Damage assessment is pending. Officials tell news that a 7.2 magnitude Philippines earthquake today 2013 began just after 1:00 PM local time. The quake had a moderate depth. USGS indicates to news that the quake started twenty miles below ground level. But unlike other quakes hitting the country this year, this one was centered on-land. USGS indicates to news that the quake was one mile south of Carmen, Philippines. The quake was nineteen miles east of Tibigan and twenty-five miles southwest of Talibon. The quake was twenty-five miles east of Tagbilaran and roughly four hundred miles south of Manila. USGS tells news that "Seismic activity along the boundaries of the Philippine Sea Plate ... has produced 7 great magnitude 8+ earthquakes and 250 large magnitude 7+ events. Among the most destructive events were the 1923 Kanto". Among them was a 1990 M7.6 Luzon (Philippines) earthquake which left 2,400 casualties. In June a 6.0 magnitude quake struck the country. The quake was one hundred sixty-miles southeast of Hengchun and roughly four hundred miles from Manila. The county has been hit be several quakes this summer mostly out in the sea. In January, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines. The quake began only one mile from Balayan, officials told news. The quake was seven miles from Calaca and eight miles from Calatagan. USGS indicated to news that the quake was fifty miles from Manila and eleven miles from Nasugbu. The 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake in Kobe Japan
The 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake in Kobe Japan
The Japanese city of Kobe is rocked by the Great Hanshin Earthquake which destroys most of its buildings. Many traditional houses collapse due to the heavy roofs and weak walls. Liquefaction occurs at the coastal and port areas of Kobe. 6,434 people die in what is then Japan's worst peacetime disaster. The Great Hanshin earthquake, or Kobe earthquake, occurred on Tuesday, January 17, 1995, at 05:46 JST (January 16 at 20:46 UTC) in the southern part of Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. It measured 6.8 on the moment magnitude scale (USGS), and Mj7.3 (adjusted from 7.2) on JMA magnitude scale. The tremors lasted for approximately 20 seconds. The focus of the earthquake was located 16 km beneath its epicenter, on the northern end of Awaji Island, 20 km away from the city of Kobe. Approximately 6,434 people lost their lives (final estimate as of December 22, 2005); about 4,600 of them were from Kobe. Among major cities, Kobe, with its population of 1.5 million, was the closest to the epicenter and hit by the strongest tremors. This was Japan's worst earthquake in the 20th century after the Great Kantō earthquake in 1923, which claimed 140,000 lives. It caused approximately ten trillion yen ($100 billion) in damage, 2.5% of Japan's GDP at the time. Most of the largest earthquakes in Japan are caused by subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate or Pacific Plate, with mechanisms that involve either energy released within the subducting plate or the accumulation and sudden release of stress in the overlying plate. Earthquakes of these types are especially frequent in the coastal regions of northeastern Japan. The Great Hanshin earthquake belonged to a third type, called an "inland shallow earthquake". Earthquakes of this type occur along active faults. Even at lower magnitudes, they can be very destructive because they often occur near populated areas and because their hypocenters are located less than 20 km below the surface. The Great Hanshin earthquake began north of the island of Awaji, which lies just south of Kobe. It spread toward the southwest along the Nojima Fault on Awaji and toward the northeast along the Suma and Suwayama faults, which run through the center of Kobe. Observations of deformations in these faults suggest that the area was subjected to east-west compression, which is consistent with previously known crustal movements. Like other earthquakes recorded in western Japan between 1891 and 1948, the 1995 earthquake had a strike-slip mechanism that accommodated east-west shortening of the Eurasian Plate due to its collision with the Philippine Sea Plate in central Honshu.- published: 31 Dec 2013

5.3 magnitude earthquake in Fukushima Japan
An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale has been recorded near the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant. There are no reports of damage to destroyed facilities and no spike in radiation levels in the area. The earthquake took place at 17:25 GMT, according to United States Geological Service. The tremors were felt in 17 prefectures around Japan including Tokyo, but the epicenter was 20 km beneath the surface on the Pacific coast but only around 50 miles from the Fukushima plant. TEPCO, the company in charge of the cleanup operations at the site has said it is monitoring the plant and that so-far no irregularities have been discovered, according to the local media. There has been no Tsunami alert after the quake. Japan straddles 4 major tectonic plates, the Pacific plate; North America plate; Eurasia plate; and Philippine Sea plate, meaning that it is highly vulnerable to earthquakes and tsunamis. Earlier this month an earthquake measuring 6.9 struck the Izu Islands off Japan and was felt 400 miles away in Tokyo, but no damage was recorded at the Fukushima plant. PLANETARY TREMORS: Very Powerful 7.2 Magnitude Quake Strikes The Philippines - Scores Dead!
The CELESTIAL Convergence | http://thecelestialconvergence.blogspot.com/ October 14, 2013 - PHILIPPINES - The death toll from a 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the central Philippine island of Bohol on Tuesday has risen to 93 as rescuers struggled to reach patients in a collapsed hospital. Centuries-old stone churches crumbled and wide areas were without power. The Bohol police chief, Dennis Agustin, said 77 of the deaths were in the province, where the quake hit near the town of Carmen. At least 15 others died in nearby Cebu province and another on Siquijor island. The quake struck at 8.12am and was centred about 20 miles (33km) below Carmen on Bohol island, where many buildings collapsed, roads split and bridges fell. There was also extensive damage to densely populated Cebu city, separated by a narrow strait from Bohol. A number of people died when a building in the port and the roof of a market collapsed. The quake also sparked two stampedes. Five people were crushed to death and eight injured when a crowd rushed to evacuate a gym in Cebu, said provincial disaster management officer Neil Sanchez. "We ran out of the building, and outside, we hugged trees because the tremors were so strong," said Vilma Yorong, a government employee in Bohol. "When the shaking stopped, I ran to the street and there I saw several injured people. Some were saying their church has collapsed," she told the Associated Press by phone. The closure of offices and schools for the national Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha is thought to have saved many lives. Tuesday's quake was deeper below the surface than the 6.9-magnitude quake last year in waters near Negros island, also in the central Philippines, which killed nearly 100 people. This is why the internet was invented part 2
Japan has a total of 6,852 islands extending along the Pacific coast of East Asia. The country, including all of the islands it controls, lies between latitudes 24° and 46°N, and longitudes 122° and 146°E. The main islands, from north to south, are Hokkaidō, Honshū, Shikoku and Kyūshū. The Ryūkyū Islands, including Okinawa, are a chain to the south of Kyūshū. Together they are often known as the Japanese Archipelago. About 73 percent of Japan is forested, mountainous, and unsuitable for agricultural, industrial, or residential use. As a result, the habitable zones, mainly located in coastal areas, have extremely high population densities. Japan is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. The islands of Japan are located in a volcanic zone on the Pacific Ring of Fire. They are primarily the result of large oceanic movements occurring over hundreds of millions of years from the mid-Silurian to the Pleistocene as a result of the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate beneath the continental Amurian Plate and Okinawa Plate to the south, and subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Okhotsk Plate to the north. Japan was originally attached to the eastern coast of the Eurasian continent. The subducting plates pulled Japan eastward, opening the Sea of Japan around 15 million years ago. Japan has 108 active volcanoes. Destructive earthquakes, often resulting in tsunami, occur several times each century. The 1923 Tokyo earthquake killed over 140,000 people.[80] More recent major quakes are the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake and the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, a 9.0-magnitude quake which hit Japan on 11 March 2011, and triggered a large tsunami. On 24 May 2012, 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Japan. However, no tsunami was generated.- published: 06 Nov 2013
