New Documentaries 2015 Revisiting a Forgotten Battlefield - Peleliu Island
Seventy years ago, Peleliu, part of the Palau Islands in the Pacific Ocean, was one of the most ferocious battlefields between Japanese and American troops during the Pacific War. However, the truth remained hidden and Peleliu eventually became forgotten. More than one hundred recently discovered films extensively document how the pressure on both sides increased as the war progressed. NHK has interviewed the cameraman who made those films as well as Japanese and American veterans still alive today. This program depicts the harsh realities of war that never stops once started."

Finally enlisted as a Marine, Sledge trains for combat at Camp Elliott. The 1st Marine Division lands at Cape Gloucester on the Japanese-held island of New Britain. As Leckie and the other Marines battle the Japanese, they quickly realize that the more ominous enemy is the smothering jungle itself. Having survived Gloucester and stationed on the godforsaken island of Pavuvu, Leckie begins displaying the physical and mental effects of combat and is sent to a naval hospital on nearby Banika for psychiatric observation.

Pavuvu is the largest of the Russell Islands in Central Province, Solomon Islands. It is located Northwest of Guadalcanal. The area is 120 km².
The island had served as a coconut plantation for natives. In 1941, when the United States declared war on Japan, the island natives abandoned it when the Imperial Japanese Navy swept over the Solomon islands. After the United States captured Guadalcanal, they were able to use the airfield to bomb out the Japanese garrisons on nearby islands. Pavuvu was one of them. This island served as temporary home to the U.S. 1st Marine Division after their action on Cape Gloucester, and again after their action on Peleliu during the conflict against Japan. After the war, the Natives returned to the island, and resumed the coconut plantation.

Bob Hope, KBE, KCSG, KSS (born Leslie Townes Hope; May 29, 1903 – July 27, 2003) was an English-born American comedian and actor who appeared in vaudeville, on Broadway, and in radio, television and movies. He was also noted for his work with the US Armed Forces and his numerous USO shows entertaining American military personnel. Throughout his long career, he was honored for his humanitarian work. In 1996, the U.S. Congress honored Bob Hope by declaring him the "first and only honorary veteran of the U.S. armed forces." Bob Hope appeared in or hosted 199 known USO shows.
Hope was born in Eltham, London, England, the fifth of seven sons. His English father, William Henry Hope, was a stonemason from Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, and his Welsh mother, Avis Townes, was a light opera singer from Barry who later worked as a cleaning woman. She married William Hope in April 1891 and the couple set up home at 12 Greenwood Street in the town, then moved to Whitehall and St George in Bristol, before eventually moving to Cleveland, Ohio in 1908. The family emigrated to the United States aboard the SS Philadelphia, and passed inspection at Ellis Island on March 30, 1908. Hope became a U.S. citizen in 1920 at the age of 17. In a 1942 legal document, Hope's legal name is given as Lester Townes Hope. His name on the Social Security Index is also listed as Lester T. Hope. His name as registered at birth was Leslie Towns [sic] Hope.

This segment opens with Bearss (a noted Civil War historian) gruffly exclaiming, "When he hit me, it felt like a sledgehammer." The manner in which he relates this dramatic story is a colorful commentary on one man's near-death war experience. "The son-of-a-bitch is shooting a wounded man," Bearss say angrily, but softens his hard edge a bit with a slight smile. He then barks out, "Blood stinks" when he tells of how he came out of shock in the midst of the many heroic Marines wounded at Suicide Creek. -

Out from the cities and rustic towns to some unknown village...another pitch battle with the still retreating Soviets...they seem to turn and fight with little concern or...even a...thought of the German's superior firepower...fighting to the last bullet...they have impressed the German Infanty as dangerous and unpredictable...then, out again, the army marches off to the middle of yet another wilderness and again another long march to fight another pitch battle at yet another...unknown village or god-forsaken crossroads...Hans has told us of the replacement that are coming from Kiev to re-fill our deflated ranks...Karl again grumbled that he will believe it when he sees it...I thought about returning home...after...when...this is all over...write more later...
