Gilbert Anthony Cedillo (born March 25, 1954 in Barstow, California) is an American politician, currently a member of the Los Angeles City Council for District 1, succeeding Ed Reyes after his election on May 21, 2013. Cedillo was a Democratic member of both the California State Assembly and the California State Senate.
Cedillo was a candidate for California's 32nd congressional district seat, vacated by Hilda Solis. A California's 32nd Congressional District Special Election, 2009 was held on May 19, 2009. Cedillo lost the Democratic primary against Board of Equalization Member Judy Chu.
Cedillo grew up in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles and is a lifelong resident of the 22nd District. His father worked as a mechanic at American Can in Vernon and was a member of the United Steelworkers of America. His mother was a garment worker at Sears and Times-Mirror Press. Cedillo attended Lorena Street and Euclid Avenue Elementary, Stevenson Junior High and Roosevelt High where he met and became close friends with Antonio Villaraigosa, former Mayor of Los Angeles. At Roosevelt, he was varsity quarterback and excelled academically as well, receiving a full academic scholarship to the University of California, Los Angeles.
Cedillo (Casalinho in Portuguese) is a town and municipality in Spain, located in the province of Cáceres, community of Extremadura. According to the 2008 census (INE), the municipality has a population of 518 inhabitants.
The town is close to the border with Portugal. Although the official language is Spanish, the traditional local dialect is a variety of Portuguese. The Portuguese spoken here is not Standard Portuguese but instead consists of an archaic Portuguese dialect arrived in the 18th century known as Cedilhero. It is similar to the Alentejan dialect of Portuguese spoken in the neighbouring area of Portugal.
Portuguese is spoken here because most of the first inhabitants of this region were Portuguese colonists who arrived in the 18th century. In addition, in Cedillo, speaking Spanish was considered an act of pedantry and a symbol of social and economic relief. The children who could attend school spoke Spanish because they learned it in school, but they still spoke Portuguese in their homes.
A city council, town council, town board, or board of aldermen is the legislative body that governs a city, town, municipality or local government area.
Because of the differences in legislation between the States, the exact definition of a City Council varies. However, it is generally only those local government areas which have been specifically granted city status (usually on a basis of population) that are entitled to refer to themselves as cities. The official title is "Corporation of the City of ------" or similar.
Some of the larger urban areas of Australia are governed mostly by a single entity (see Brisbane and other Queensland cities), while others maybe controlled by a multitude of much smaller city councils. Also some significant urban areas can be under the jurisdiction of otherwise rural local governments. Periodic re-alignments of boundaries attempt to rationalize these situations and adjust the deployment of assets and resources.
Local councils in New Zealand do vary in structure, but are overseen by the government department Local Government New Zealand. For many decades until the local government reforms of 1989, a borough with more than 20,000 people could be proclaimed a city. The boundaries of councils tended to follow the edge of the built-up area, so little distinction was made between the urban area and the local government area.
Los Angeles (i/lɒs ˈændʒəlᵻs/ loss AN-jə-ləs or loss AN-jə-liss) (Spanish for "The Angels"), officially the City of Los Angeles and often known by its initials L.A., is the second-largest city in the United States after New York City, the most populous city in the state of California, and the county seat of Los Angeles County.
Situated in Southern California, Los Angeles is known for its mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, sprawling metropolis, and as a major center of the American entertainment industry. Los Angeles lies in a large coastal basin surrounded on three sides by mountains reaching up to and over 10,000 feet (3,000 m).
Historically home to the Chumash and Tongva, Los Angeles was claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542 along with the rest of what would become Alta California. The city was officially founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. The city experienced rapid growth with the discovery of oil.

Council member Cedillo appeared disconnected and uninterested at the Los Angeles City Council District One Debate in Glassell Park on February 16, 2017. He took credit for projects he wasn't involved in and lost his temper, shouting at the audience more than once. He even took a phone call while other candidates were speaking. L.A.'s District One deserves better. On March 7th, VOTE Cedillo out of office. #chaleconcedillo
Chevron has generously contributed thousands of dollars to Gil Cedillo's political campaigns. Chevron also spent $1.8 million on lobbying to defeat an anti-global warming bill. Chevron wants to build more freeways, prevent environmental regulations on their refineries and make sure they have a friend in government who will ensure their needs are prioritized. Cedillo has proven to be a reliable friend to Chevron, taking action to protect their profits over the well-being of the community. Since the filming of this documentary, over the course of a year and a half, 4 local residents each lost their lives after being struck by speeding vehicles on N. Figueroa, the same street which was slated for street safety improvements before Cedillo entered office & halted the project. This clip is be...
Council member Gil Cedillo recently introduced a motion calling for the City of Los Angeles to divest from Trump and associated entities. Yet he has failed to do this on a personal level: one of Trump's biggest donors, Beverly Hills developer Geoff Palmer (who gave $2Million to Trump) has also supported Cedillo financially. Geoff Palmer once sued the city over it's requirement to include affordable housing units in new developments. He calls this law 'not American'. So why has Cedillo accepted money from him? It doesn't seem he has the best interests of the local community in mind. March 7, 2017. Let's vote Cedillo out of office. Make a better choice for Council District 1. LA City Councilmember Gil Cedillo plans to remove trees in Lincoln Heights along a mile-long corridor on Pasadena Avenue as part of a $2.5Million project. Parking on one side of this street will even be removed to make room for a bike lane. There was ZERO community input on this large, expensive project. Cedillo simply decided he would do it, without asking local residents or businesses what they thought. And of course, he's doing this right around election time so he can have a good photo opp. March 7, 2017: Make a better choice for City Council District One. Vote Cedillo out of office!

Senator GIl Cedillo speaks to L.A. Streetsblog after the CD 1 Candidates Forum Hosted by Occidental College/UEPI and sponsored by the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, Los Angeles Walks and Streetsblog Los Angeles.

Assemblyman Cedillo said, in a 2012 interview: Democrat Gilbert Cedillo of LA's 45th District said [...] that California should aim to make bicycling as safe and normal as it is in Denmark, which he visited recently. "A bike lane there is as big as any car lane that we have. And that is really where we need to get to," he said. "In a vehicle, you're safe and protected — on a bicycle, you're not, and we have to figure out a way to share our highways as they exist today." Councilman Gil Cedillo said, in dozens of unanswered queries about a bike lane on N. Figueroa St. and bike lane projects in his district: NOTHING Time to get riled up and get engaged. This has been a slog since 2008 to get Council District 1 he bike and pedestrian projects it needs to enable its residents to have viab...

The owners of the Shell gas station at 5137 N. Figueroa Street, on the corner of Avenue 52, want to build an automatic car wash. An automatic car wash already exists at a 76 station across Avenue 52. A union hand wash exists directly across the street on North Figueroa Street. Over 1,000 local residents from the immediate area have signed a petition opposed to this, a potential 3rd, car wash at this intersection. The project is scheduled for another public hearing at the East Los Angeles Area Planning Commission on March 11, 2015 at 4:30 p.m. at Ramona Hall located at 4580 N. Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA 90065. An early City Planning determination (a "Project Permit Compliance Review and an HPOZ Certificate of Compatibility") approved the project. The neighbors living next door filed an...
